If we’re going to compare the book to the movie we have to make sure we’ve carefully read the book and watched the movie occasionally stopping your mind to evaluate the movie wondering what is different. I did just that, Beowulf the book compared to the movie has a variety of differences and some similarities. In my opinion the movie was better, let me tell you why.
Let us begin with the book, Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo, published in 1815 at first obviously. In the book this “monster” that no one knows what it exactly looks like but are guessing from the description that Grendle is hideous and likes to tear things up. Grendle is going after this village for revenge of them stealing his prized treasure. The king of Denmark, Hrothgar builds a reign while everyone admires him until he can not fight off this monster. When Grendle destroys the village a brave man of the name Beowulf takes on the challenge to defeat this monster.Grendel slays the

The first difference I notice is in the book women are very disrespected with not having very many rights, while in the movie women are in the Mead Hall with the men partying not much in the kitchen like the book portrayed, that’s the very first thing I see. Also now in the book Beowulf rips Grendle’s arm off for his death but in the movie Beowulf grapples Grendel, who has a chain wrapped around his arm, pulling it loose. As Grendel is trying to flee Heorot, Beowulf slams the door on his arm, severing it. Also in the book Grendle’s mother goes to avenge them but in the movie his mother visits Beowulf as he is asleep with all the other villagers and she visits him in his dreams and awakens to see she has killed many men of the Herot. Also in the book the mother’s lair is guarded in the movie it’s deserted. After slaying Grendel's mother, Beowulf brings Hrunting, Grendel's head and the hilt from the giant's sword back to Heorot in the book where in the movie she brings the head to
One major difference between the text and the movie is the characters. One of the characters that seem to differ quite a bit between the movie and the book is Beowulf. Everyone think of him as the hero that killed the monsters they were terrified of and probably would never think of a “hero” as a liar. In the book it never says anything about him lying about killing Grendel’s mother as it shows in the movie; according to the text “struck it with all the strength he had left, caught her in the neck and cut it through, broke bones and all. Her body fell to the floor…”(521). Another character in Beowulf that differs is Grendel, in the movie Grendel seemed to be able to communicate with the other
In the beginning of the story the plot stays the same for the most part... other than Beowulf being motivated by other things than glory or pride. When Grendel is killed in the movie they introduce his mother, they don't show her face but they hint to her being very seductive by the way she talks. Grendel’s mom doesn't really seek revenge in the movie but Hrothgar asks Beowulf to kill her because of a prior incident (Grendel is actually Hrothgar's son) with Grendel’s mom. Beowulf obliges and goes to kill G’s mom but when he enter her den he is almost instantly taken away by her beauty, this causes Beowulf to have a lapse in judgement and impregnate G’s mom. This is very different from the book because in the book he kills G’s mom in a battle to the death then cuts the head off of Grendel’s dead body as illustrated “Armless, exactly as that fierce fighter had sent him out from Herot, then struck off His head with a single swift blow”(542). Also after Beowulf was seduced he goes back to Hrothgar and lies to him and the Danes saying that he has killed Grendel’s mother. This is the major plot difference in the movie and the book.
First published in 1971, Grendel, written by John Gardner, elaborates on the beast from the classic epic poem Beowulf. Grendel, a large beast in the land of the Danes, has been engaged in a twelve-year long war against the humans. Gardner’s book expounds upon the origins and life of Grendel and why he acted like he did throughout Beowulf. In Grendel, the main character meets and talks to the Dragon, who gives him advice and winds up having a greater impact than either of the two characters had expected. Throughout the book, this conversation between the two characters leads to the Dragon putting a charm on Grendel, Grendel killing more humans, and it helps to illuminate the theme of monsters and humans in the book.
Beowulf is about a warrior who fights a huge monster to show his loyalty to a king that was not even his. It was written in the Anglo-Saxon time period and this greatly affects the way the story is written. Grendel is written from the monster's point of view and this was written many years later.
In the epic of Beowulf, one of the warrior’s biggest adversaries is a creature from the swamp named Grendel. Although the character of Grendel is present for only a short portion in the story of Beowulf, Grendel signifies one of the important messages in the text about humanity. In Beowulf, Grendel is called a ‘monster’. However, if observed closely, analyzing the meaning behind the story, it is easy to see that Grendel is not a typical monster, in fact, it doesn’t seem like he is a monster at all. There is much evidence within the short period of the text where Grendel is present, which indicates he is
There are many differences between the two such as setting, characters, and the organization of the storyline. In the book they start out at in Danish kingdom and switch the Gaet’s kingdom with the return of Beowulf. But in the movie the setting is always in the Danish kingdom. The stories are similar because they both start out at Herot hall in the Danish kingdom. As far as characters go Wiglaf, Beowulf, and Hrothgar all have the same character roles in both the storylines. But in the movie there is not a character named Aschere like in the book. Instead Unferth’s role as a Gaet in the book is opposite for the movie. Grendel was killed the same way when Beowulf tears his arm off. For example the mom wasn’t killed in the movie and she became Beowulf’s lover. In the movie Hrothgar is Grendel’s dad but not in the book. In the book Wiglaf deals the final blow to the dragon with his sword but in the movie Beowulf rips its heart out. In both the book and movie Beowulf is showered with treasure and honor from the grateful Danes. Also he is buried or sent away with his treasure in both of the storylines. Unferth doubts Beowulf’s ability to fight the monster but ends up giving him his sword as a token of gratitude in both of the stories. In the movie Hrothgar kills himself but we don’t know how he dies in the book. But the man key difference is Beowulf being the king of the Danes and never returning to rule his fellow
The story of Beowulf is a heroic epic chronicling the illustrious deeds of the great Geatish warrior Beowulf, who voyages across the seas to rid the Danes of an evil monster, Grendel, who has been wreaking havoc and terrorizing the kingdom. Beowulf is glorified for his heroic deeds of ridding the land of a fiendish monster and halting its scourge of evil while the monster is portrayed as a repugnant creature who deserves to die because of its evil actions. In the epic poem, Beowulf the authors portrays Grendel as a cold-hearted beast who thrives on the pain of others. Many have disagreed with such a simplistic and biased representation of Grendel and his role in the epic poem. John Gardner in his book, Grendel set out to change the
Beowulf is portrayed as a hero-figure, though a less-than-ideal leader, since his warrior-like tendencies and habits follow him. Conversely, the movie Beowulf portrays our hero as more of an anti-hero. By its very nature, Beowulf is an epic hero, but I do not think that the movie does not portray him as such a hero compared to the original translation, because it has an entirely different storyline. If anything, the movie portrays Beowulf as a weak person, easily swooned by the beauty of Grendel’s mother. The movie and the book differ in several key ways, including his relationship with the kingdom and his villains. Even though the general plot is the same, when you really take a deep look at the differences, Beowulf’s movie ceases to be a version of Beowulf anymore, but rather an entirely new story about the same person.
On the other hand, another difference between the movie and the book is Beowulf lies about killing Grendel’s mother. Instead of killing her, he had sex with her. They had a dragon together. His son was doing harm to people, so he had to kill the dragon. What that does is change the whole theme. He puts more people in danger, including himself. The dragon killed Beowulf. In the movie he fought the dragon under the water instead of Grendel’s mother. In the movie they made him a liar.
Beowulf, composed during the eighth century, has its roots in the traditions of the Anglo-Saxon tribes. King Hrothgar, a successful ruler, builds his mead-hall, Heorot, where he entertains his guests and warriors with songs and feasts. The jubilant songs and festivities anger a horrendous monster, Grendel, who begins to terrorize the Danes, slaughtering and feasting on their corpses. Beowulf, a Geatish warrior, sails to save the Danes from their misery by slaying Grendel. Beowulf remains one of the most influential works of literature today because of its elegant tone and many contrasts. John Gardner draws inspiration for his novel Grendel from Beowulf. The novel offers the reader insight into Grendel’s mind as he attempts to find his purpose
The poem Beowulf, written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon poet and the movie script, written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary. The story is about a Man named Beowulf, who becomes a hero to his town Heorot, by defeating a monster named Grendel. He is later named King of Geats, because of his braveness and loyalty to his people. After about fifty years of ruling, a dragon threatens the town’s people. Beowulf and his servant, Wiglaf, set off to defeat this dragon. While he did succeed to kill it, sadly Beowulf dies in the process. In the poem versus the movie, Beowulf shows different character traits throughout the story. Heroism, loyalty, and bravery all differ from the poem to the movie. The audience will perceive Beowulf as a completely different person if only looking at one of the two pieces.
When a book gets made into a movie there are many similarities and differences. A difference between the Reading and the motion picture is that the reading explains the real story of Beowulf more detailed.
Beowulf, which was written in 1000 A.D, is the story of the warrior Beowulf fighting against the monster Grendel, who is killing innocent people (n.d.). It is unsure who wrote Beowulf, considering it was mainly a story told during the Anglo-Saxon period. Throughout Beowulf, it lacked description. The author didn’t describe Beowulf in detail, so the reader doesn’t know much about him. The
A minor difference between the movie and the book was concerning the scene about Sir Henry going to the moor. In the book he was pretty upset that people were trying to keep him from going there, but in the movie he showed the least bit of emotion. This was not a major impact on the story but it definitely added character to Sir Henry. In the movie Sir Henry was somewhat timid and in the book that scene showed he was not afraid to stand up for himself.

John Gardner in his book, Grendel, sets out to change the reader’s perception of Grendel and his role in Beowulf by narrating the story through Grendel’s point of view. John Gardner transforms Grendel, once perceived as an evil fiend in Beowulf, into a lonely but intelligent outcast who is actually quite similar to humans, due to his intelligence capacity for rational thought and his real, and at times irrational emotions. Gardner portrays Grendel as a hurt individual and as a victim of oppression, ostracized from civilization. Although the two works revolve around the same basic plot,, the themes and characters in Beowulf and Grendel are often different and sometimes contradictory.
