In today’s modern society, we are able to see objects and ideas that we can relate back to objects and ideas that were used in the past. Many of the architectural structures we see in today’s society can be traced back to Greek, Roman, and other previous society’s times. For example, the aqueduct is a structure that we still use today, yet it was designed by the Romans many years ago. The same runs true for literature. When we analyze Beowulf and analyze the literature of today, we can acknowledge instances where they look similar and it shows that Beowulf helped shape today’s literature. We are able to see it in how the authors developed the hero and the villain, as well as, how the story is laid out. The story of Beowulf has been around for many generations, and it has helped shape today’s writing. To see how Beowulf shaped modern literature we can look at the hero of Beowulf, which is Beowulf, and the heroes of today’s modern literature. In both, we see that hero’s all have certain qualities that made them heroes. In the poem of Beowulf, Beowulf is said to be the strongest man in the land, its states that he was the “strongest of the Geats…” (Raffel, 26). It defines Beowulf as a person who has beyond human abilities. Beowulf also volunteers to go to Hrothgar to fight the Grendel (Raffel, 26). Beowulf takes action to go fight off an evil spirit and even though it was for self-glory it is still considered a heroic action. In current literature, we see heroic qualities

The Importance of Beowulf in Modern America By Jennifer Carley Modern culture and literature include many stories of great heroes and fictional adventures. Many people grow up reading about these great adventures and looking up to the heroes of the stories. Heroes are great roll models because they are portrayed as courageous and trustworthy individuals, two very admirable qualities. Despite numerous cultural and technological advancements, life in modern America continues to bear resemblance to the Anglo-Saxon world of the hero Beowulf. Most of us have heard of modern day heroes such as Spiderman, Superman, and the Hulk. Each is a hero to many children. Heroes are introduced to people early on in life usually as fictional characters, but as children grow older their perceptions of heroes alter. The characteristics of a hero are usually based around the ideas of a society or culture. In the epic Beowulf, the main character is thought of as a hero. Beowulf, a pagan warrior and the main character of the epic, shows certain characteristics such as bravery, loyalty, and generosity, which portray him as a hero. It is interesting how modern day heroes show the much of the same qualities as Beowulf.
Beowulf is a hero because of his actions in the novel. Heroic traits includes determination, physical strength, courage, loyalty, and leadership, which Beowulf demonstrated throughout the story. A quote from Beowulf shows an example of his determination, “…Fought with fate against him, with glory/ Denied him. He knew it, but he raised his sword/ And struck at the dragon’s scaly hide,” (Beowulf-Translator). Beowulf realized that there was a chance he would not win the battle, however his determination did not stop him from trying. Another quote from Beowulf shows his courage, “Alone shall fight for me, struggle for life/ Against the monster,” (Beowulf- Translator). Beowulf fought against Grendel without any weapons, just his
Beowulf was a hero not only because of his physical strength, but also for his concern for other people. “The hero must move beyond human limits in order to have the capacity to combat the monstrous forces that threaten the social order;” (Sharma 264) Beowulf has been deemed by most to have superhuman strength, but his superhuman strength alone does not make Beowulf any more a hero than Grendel’s strength makes him a hero. Beowulf rises above the limits of a regular human being
Beowulf is a hero, and we all know a hero when we see one. There are many traits and characteristics that make someone a hero. These traits and characteristics are more expressed in ancient epics and poems. Beowulf is one of the most famous ancient Anglo-Saxon poems still taught to this day in schools and colleges all over the world. The story starts off of how a man by the name of Beowulf receives news that a neighboring land is being terrorized by a monster named Grendel. Beowulf shows several characteristics of here such as, bravery, loyalty, generosity, friendship, and showing a high level of intellect. Beowulf first shows his heroic character through his bravery while journeying on his epic quest. There are several cases where he is not afraid, and instead of being frightened, he shows great bravery. An example of from the poem is, “Instead, they inspected omens and spurred his ambitions to go, whilst he moved about like the leader he was, enlisting men, the best he could find; with fourteen others the warrior boarded the boast as captain” (Beowulf 205-210). This quote gives proof of his bravery because he was the head of the group leading his men. Beowulf proves that even he himself must be brave in order to lead the bravest of men into battle.
Beowulf and Grendel are two different stories, and characters, who look at the same situation in polarized ways. Each character has their own story that is written from different time periods: the Anglo-Saxon time period and America in the 1970’s. Both of these time periods have different attributes that make them special; the Anglo-Saxon time period consists of the literary movement of the epic poem and America in the 1970’s consists of the literary movement known as postmodernism. Beowulf is shaped by the Anglo-Saxon time period through its use of the heroic code and religious influences and Grendel is shaped by the American 1970’s time period through its use of metafiction and an unreliable narrator.
But the things that really separate Beowulf from the two modern heros I have described are the values of the time periods these stories were written. Like how Beowulf’s only solution to a problem is killing the problem. Whereas in Star Wars, Luke is able to coax the good out of his father (his enemy) by refusing to fight. This makes Luke Skywalker a modern hero. Beowulf would never do anything like this. The Values shown in Star Wars reflects the values of America after the Vietnam War - they’re vastly different from the values of Anglo-Saxon, which the Epic Beowulf is based off of.
