Beowulf Influences In Modern Literature

In today’s modern society, we are able to see objects and ideas that we can relate back to objects and ideas that were used in the past. Many of the architectural structures we see in today’s society can be traced back to Greek, Roman, and other previous society’s times. For example, the aqueduct is a structure that we still use today, yet it was designed by the Romans many years ago. The same runs true for literature. When we analyze Beowulf and analyze the literature of today, we can acknowledge instances where they look similar and it shows that Beowulf helped shape today’s literature. We are able to see it in how the authors developed the hero and the villain, as well as, how the story is laid out. The story of Beowulf has been around for many generations, and it has helped shape today’s writing. To see how Beowulf shaped modern literature we can look at the hero of Beowulf, which is Beowulf, and the heroes of today’s modern literature. In both, we see that hero’s all have certain qualities that made them heroes. In the poem of Beowulf, Beowulf is said to be the strongest man in the land, its states that he was the “strongest of the Geats…” (Raffel, 26). It defines Beowulf as a person who has beyond human abilities. Beowulf also volunteers to go to Hrothgar to fight the Grendel (Raffel, 26). Beowulf takes action to go fight off an evil spirit and even though it was for self-glory it is still considered a heroic action. In current literature, we see heroic qualities
