When poems and books are transformed into movies, they can either be very similar or very different. Between the movie and epic poem Beowulf, there were many similarities and differences. There were many aspects that I was surprised that they changed for the movie and I didn’t completely understand the purpose. Nevertheless, the changes did help an old story come to life in an entertaining way. In this essay, I will discuss the important and significant similarities and differences of Grendel’s mother, the dragon, Beowulf’s overall character in the movie. In both the poem and the movie, Beowulf sets out to kill Grendel’s mother after killing Grendel. In the poem though, Grendel’s mother is a terrifying monster. When Beowulf comes to slay her, her main motivation is to get revenge on him for killing her son. However, in the movie, she does not seem very vengeful at all. Instead, she is a seductress. Her main motivation is to seduce Beowulf and she ends up highly successful when they make love. …show more content…
At the end of the story, years after Beowulf’s battles with Grendel and his mother, Beowulf goes to slay the dragon because of its violent attacks. In the poem, Beowulf’s main reason for wanting to slay the dragon was because of these attacks, but also to steal some of the treasure that the dragon kept. On the other hand, in the movie, it is revealed that not only does the dragon violently attack people, but the dragon is actually Beowulf and Grendel’s mother’s son. This was a big twist in the storyline and showed how differently Beowulf’s character is portrayed in the poem and the
Movies and books are never the exact same, sometimes even the whole plot is changed around. In the book Beowulf the plot, characters, and setting are a lot different than they are when the movie was created. If a person watched the movie before they read the book, it may be totally confusing to read. In the book, Beowulf shows up and plans to fight with his men, then leaves to go back to his own kingdom. In the movie Beowulf, Beowulf ends up staying and becoming king of Dane Land.
Beowulf is an old Anglo-Saxon story of a terrifying monster Grendel, Grendel travels to the Danes mead hall Heorot and while the danes expect it least he attacks killing countless men purely for the joys of doing so. Hrothgar king of the Danes calls for a warrior to fight this unruly beast. After 12 long years of grendel attacking Hrothgar's calls are answered and the great warrior Beowulf comes to kill Grendel. Beowulf travels to the land of the Danes from across the seas and in the first night he kills Grendel. Sadly for Beowulf Grendel has a mother that now seeks revenge for her son's death and Beowulf is asked to kill Grendel’s mother as well. Beowulf goes to where Grendel’s mother is staying and battled her to the death , Beowulf wins
Anglo-Saxons refers to settlers from the German regions that migrated to Britain during the fall of the Roman Empire. In the story Beowulf, his actions portray him, indeed be an epic hero. Both Christianity and Paganism are both portrayed throughout the epic Beowulf. Beowulf frequently speaks of God throughout the story, while there are also many Pagan elements that are evident throughout the story as well. In addition, "It 's hard to ignore the Christian and Pagan elements in Beowulf. These types of elements are what define the heroic warrior in the epic Beowulf"(Vengeance the Pagan and Christian Inspiration). Throughout the epic Beowulf, while the Anglo-Saxons followed Christianity, they had a hard time letting go of the Pagan beliefs when things got hard.
The first example of the similarities and differences between the poem and the movie is the representation of religion. For example, both the movie and the poem of Beowulf included Christianity and Paganism. However, in the movie it was more about the Pagan religion, trying to make Christianity look bad. As an example, in one scenes of the movie, Beowulf says the Christianity killed the time of all heros. On the other hand, in the Beowulf poem, Beowulf is compared to the gods of Christianity. For example, in the passage The Battle With Grendel the scop describes “... Now he discovered- once the afflictor of
In his three major battles, Beowulf fights for many different reasons. His motivation varies, and as he grows older and wiser his attitude toward these battles also changes. Throughout the epic, Beowulf bradoshously beats Grendel, then more methodically murders Grendel’s mother, and with his last breathes humbly hollers for help to slay the dragon. This shows that Beowulf’s early focuses of glory and riches changes as he becomes a weathered warrior acknowledges that he cannot defeat his enemies alone and must utilize the resources provided to him such as armor, magical items, and companions.
It was kind of Beowulf’s fault that she was now a problem. So Beowulf was armed and went into the water with a goodbye to his Geats and the Danes. Nobody expected him to come back, but when he did, carrying the sword that killed Grendel’s mother and Grendel’s head, he was honored with more treasures than anybody had ever been honored with and Hrothgar’s love. Hrothgar confided in him that after ruling for so long, you really do become preoccupied with the safety of your people and yourself. Ruling becomes more of a task than an honor. You feel as though nothing you do will be enough. So Beowulf, who had arrived with nothing more than the idea of glorifying his name, had left with the wisdom of a king. Beowulf’s last battle took place in his homeland. He wasn ow king and was not fighting for glroy, but for the safety of his people. He knew that his fight against the dragon would probable be his last, but he was not aftaid of dying. He was afraid he wuold not be bale to kill the dragon. In the end both him and the dragon died. It only makes sense that the greatest man of all time should defeat the greatest beast of all time. The aftermath of this battle was somewhat different but also the same as all the rest. Beowulf was given the treasure, but not for his own glory, it was more out of respect from his people. Everybody mourned him and a temple was built in his honor so that everybody would b able to see
The things to expect from the Beowulf poem are Germanic warriors, heroes in the making, and mystical adventures but what to expect from the movie? The Beowulf poem was a Anglo Saxon poem writing around the 8th-11th century, but was told since the Anglo Saxon time period from 450 CE till now. It was about a Germanic warrior fighting for bravery, honor, and glory in battle.Although the poem and the movie share many similarities, the different portrayals of Grendel, Beowulf, and Grendel’s mother reveal the values of the societies in which they are told.
The Difference and similarities between Beowulf are crazy. The movie version of Beowulf are no where near close the actual book, which in my opinion is 100% better. Beowulf is About a fearless warrior from the land of the Geats. But that is the book version is about the same guy who won't back down from a fight but in the book but in the movie he is kind of hesitant and more cautious. In the book beowulf didn't care of it was the most feared thing in the world but when he heard about grendel in the movie he was he gave off a kind of hesitant feeling.
Foremost, Beowulf is a battle hardy warrior, albeit weary now in his old age, and he recounts many of his legendary feats throughout the poem: “Many a skirmish I survived when I was young / and many times of war,” the king says to his comrades (2426-27). Confronting the dragon head first in its own barrow, Beowulf takes “no coward path,” and in “a storm of anger,” he challenges the beast (2541, 2552). A great show of courage is displayed right in the beginning, as the king knows what must be done, even if it means sacrificing his own life. The Redcrosse knight, on the other hand, with the horror of his enemy built up monumentally over eight stanzas, begins to “quake with feare” before he charges the dragon, who is already disturbed by the knight’s presence (15.8).
An example of the differentiation of Grendel’s mother was Ch.19 “That hag was in haste, wanting to flee with her life when the liegemen spotted her. However, she seized a single clansman firmly as she fled”. This portrayal of Grendel’s mother makes her seem not as powerful as her son, Grendel. However, in the movie, Grendel’s mother is a foe who Beowulf never defeats. The major role change that is played by Grendel’s mother shows how women’s image has changed over the
Beowulf is a story about a brave leader of the Geats that thinks he can defeat any monster that tries to destroy anything in his path. He defeats Grendel and the dragon. The movie shows as things that weren’t told in the story like how Grendel mom’s is half human and can curse anyone she pleases too or like in the movie Grendel could talk but in the story they talk like Grendel is just dumb. One major difference between the text and the movie is the characters in the movie. Hrothgar seems like he is just not king like he mistreats his Queen in an unruling way and he is just plain lazy and very disrespectful to his Queen.
On the other hand, another difference between the movie and the book is Beowulf lies about killing Grendel’s mother. Instead of killing her, he had sex with her. They had a dragon together. His son was doing harm to people, so he had to kill the dragon. What that does is change the whole theme. He puts more people in danger, including himself. The dragon killed Beowulf. In the movie he fought the dragon under the water instead of Grendel’s mother. In the movie they made him a liar.
There are many, many differences between the writings of Beowulf and the theatrical interpretation of Beowulf. Included in the differences between the poem and the movie is the scenery around Grendel’s mother’s cave. In the poem the cave is protected by sea monsters and Beowulf slayed a monster to gain entry and the other sea monsters are scared off with the trumpets of Thane. In the movie the entrance to the cave is deserted and Beowulf carefully enters the cave with ease. The huge difference between the poem and the movie completely changes the outcome and moral of Beowulf. In the movie there is no forewarning of life’s delicate state by Hrothgar and much of the moral that Beowulf learns is lost within the way the movie focuses on Grendel’s mother’s beauty rather than her
The poem Beowulf, written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon poet and the movie script, written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary. The story is about a Man named Beowulf, who becomes a hero to his town Heorot, by defeating a monster named Grendel. He is later named King of Geats, because of his braveness and loyalty to his people. After about fifty years of ruling, a dragon threatens the town’s people. Beowulf and his servant, Wiglaf, set off to defeat this dragon. While he did succeed to kill it, sadly Beowulf dies in the process. In the poem versus the movie, Beowulf shows different character traits throughout the story. Heroism, loyalty, and bravery all differ from the poem to the movie. The audience will perceive Beowulf as a completely different person if only looking at one of the two pieces.
The narrator of Beowulf tells the story from a third person objective point of view. Because of this, the story is viewed from another person’s stand point which effects the total tone and tense of the epic poem. The narrator also speaks about the present and the past events and also sees into the minds of the characters. The narrator is unknown as no one knows who wrote Beowulf but the narrator seems to be against Beowulf as most of the heroic events that occur the narrator narrates with a sense of dismay. The narrator is even enthusiastic when Beowulf falls to his death. If Beowulf was told from Grendel’s mothers point of view, the evil monster, it would sound similar to that of the narrator. Grendel’s mother would describe Beowulf as an evil character full of cockiness
