Benjamin Franklin's Impact On The Constitutional Convention

Out of all of the founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin in my opinion is the one who had the greatest impact on our nation and still has a great influence on our nation today. Mostly people are familiar with Benjamin Franklin from his head being on the front of the 100 dollar bill, but there’s more to him than just his face being on the 100 dollar bill. He made a huge impact on us and not everyone realizes it, but that’s how he made it on the 100 dollar bill. Not only was Benjamin Franklin apart of founding our nation, he was also scientist, diplomat, businessman, and philosopher. Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17th, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts to soap maker Josiah Franklin and his second wife Abigail Folger. Benjamin Franklin was apart of a big family and he was the 10th child out of 16 siblings. His siblings names were Jane Mocum, James Franklin, Anne Harris, Joseph Franklin I,  Samuel Franklin, Sarah Davenport, Mary Holmes, Hannah Cole, Josiah Franklin Jr, Ebenzer Franklin, Peter Franklin, Thomas Franklin, John Franklin, Lydia Scott, Elizabeth Douse, and Joseph Franklin II.  When Benjamin Franklin was younger his father wanted him to become a preacher, so he sent him away to a grammar school when he was only eight years old. Less than a year later, the family went through some financial struggles so he had to be transferred to Mr. George Brownell’s school for writing and math. Even though, those are important and they are needed almost everyday, his biggest impact was on the Declaration of Independence. In 1776, Franklin was appointed by the Continental Congress to justify political ties with Britain. Although, Franklin was a talented writer, he let T.Jefferson write the first draft due to his poor health. Next, Jefferson turned in his first draft to Franklin and he really didn’t make any changes to the errors probably because he was sick or he was just being lazy. Once the draft was sent to Congress they either changed the errors or they just deleted the whole sentence that had errors. Finally after several drafts, Congress finally approved the Declaration of Independence on July 4,1776. The actual document wasn’t signed until mid August, and that’s when Ben signed his name along with 55 other representatives. (“Founding Father”)

Other than James Madison in the 1787 Constitution Convention, I believe that Alexander Hamilton had the most impact upon the creation of the finished document. Hamilton did many things to have a great impact on the finished document. Some examples could be, Hamilton studying European ideas on their government and economy, proposing a new government outlined by the British system, defending the Constitution, becoming a part of the federalists, and continuing to fight for what he wanted done. Without Alexander Hamilton, the new government and document would not be where it is today.

Benjamin Franklin was very influential, despite him having little formal education. He was a man of many talents. As the Revolutionary War approached, Franklin made a significant impact by writing many pamphlets and promoting union among the colonies.

He returned to America in 1785 and in just two years he was again in the center of reshaping the nation. Before the convention began, Franklin convinced Washington that his presence was needed at the convention. Franklin told Washington, “ Your presence will be of the greatest importance to the success of the measure.” His presence was so monumental that is Washington wasn't there, who knows what would have happened to the future of the country. Franklin was the oldest member at the Constitutional Convention, and was suffering from poor health and extreme pain. His presence was ideal for the convention to move forward in a positive direction because he was an extremely wise diplomat and negotiator. Franklin first proposal for government was a unicameral legislature with an executive council over a single president. And the executive would have to pay to hold office out of their own pocket. His proposal was never approved but Hamilton seconded it, just because of Ben Franklin’s reputation. This showed the influence and sway Franklin possessed. Franklin opposed the idea of using landownership as a requirement for the right to vote. He also refused to grant unlimited veto power to the president and recommended impeachment. The people of the colonies read what he had to say intently, and he informed them of the nasty rules and regulations the British were imposing on them. Liberty became an important ideal at this time causing tension between the Colonies and the British government. This tension is the causation for a committee of individuals to come together and write the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This committee included Benjamin Franklin, who was the key writer of this document; afterward, a copy was sent to the King to make him aware of the growing intolerance of his rules.

Benjamin Franklin’s most prominent contributions during the American Revolution were helping to draft the Declaration of Independence and successfully negotiating an alliance with France. In 1776, Franklin was on the five-member committee that helped craft the Declaration of Independence. Congress appointed Congress members John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and Thomas Jefferson to the committee on independence. Their task was to write a document to explain the action of declaring independence in terms relevant to Americans and Europeans alike. Jefferson received the assignment of writing the first draft of the document. Though everyone else such as Benjamin Franklin, helped to write and revise the Declaration. Although Benjamin was sick with gout at the time of the drafting, he still managed to make revisions.

Thirteen months later, Ben served on the committee that drafted the declaration of independence. He contributed to the Government by serving as a postmaster general, and took over the duties as a president of the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention. James Madison was known as the Father of the United States Constitution, no other delegate was prepared for the Federal Convention in 1787 like he was. Alexander Hamilton served in the legislature in 1787, which got him chosen as one of the delegates to the Convention. He was at a disadvantage against the other delegates because of how small of a role he played in the debates. He did however end up as one of the three delegates from New York that signed the finished document. George Washington always had concerns for the country’s future, so he was never a fan of the convention because of humanity’s common failings, and he realized that many citizens suspected the convention would be merely a seizure of power from the states by an all powerful central government and he didn’t want to attend because he didn’t want to appear as the power grasping type of person.The U.S. Constitution called "a living document." Another big impact on the United States Constitution were two men, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. Alexander Hamilton was a representative from New York and a member of the Federalist party (Who Wrote The Constitution). He was against what the Articles of Confederation stated and knew how to make a well thought out Constitution. Hamilton was born as an illegitimate child and was unable to obtain a proper lifestyle because of it (Banducci, 2017). And yet, that didn't stop him from trying to achieve his dreams.

Franklin did many things in the Constitutional Convention. Franklin was was the oldest to sign the constitution. He wanted some rights that he felt like was needed.

Benjamin Franklin was one of the most successful founding fathers of our nation and helped establish American independence from Great Britain. He was a key member in the development of the political backbone that has shaped this country into what it is today. Benjamin Franklin was one of the most humble and inspirational figures of that time. He was a major factor in the outcome of the war of Independence and in his selfless actions of leaving his family, won the help from the French to assist America in the fight against England. I sincerely believe that if any other man had given this same speech that it would not have impacted America so greatly. He managed to distil in the people a sense of pride in the constitution that remains today. I quote him saying, “I doubt whether any other Convention we can obtain may be able to make a better Constitution.” This was one of the first building blocks that led to modern American’s sense of nationalism. He also states, “In these sentiments, Sir, I agree to this Constitution with all its faults…” This helped citizens understand that he didn’t believe that the Constitution was perfect, which was a precedent for amendments to be added, and many were. Overall, Benjamin Franklin was a very influential man of the time and a lot of people wanted to listen to what he had to say. He helped set up the U.S on the track that our government would take, especially regarding the Constitution.
