From 1800 to 2014, the population has grown from 1 billion to 7 billion people. With this massive explosion in population, and increased use of technology, it has placed strain on our planets’ limited food resources, resulting in increased mortality rates due to hunger and starvation. GMO’s, also known as genetically modified organisms, are plants or animals that have had their genes directly manipulated by humans, that claim to help solve this problem, along with providing additional benefits to society. Genetically modified plants promise to have increased crop yield, resistance to disease and pests, and maximized nutritional value, to help reduce food production issues around the world. They have also implemented Act on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity Through Regulations on the Use of Genetically Modified Organisms (Cartagena Act) in 2003. In addition, they are also one of the 89 countries that regularly submit reports on how they have implemented the protocol, and ensured safety of imported crops. Further more, the labeling requirements under the Food Sanitation Law and Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS) require any products containing more than five percent of GMOs to be labeled as such. These procedures reduce the harm that GMOs present, and also increase consumer awareness. Japan strongly encourages other nations to adopt similar standards, and participate actively in verifying the safety of GMOs.

It is critical, that the correct measures are implemented promptly to ensure the safety of the people. Japan strongly suggests other nations to also discontinue the growth of GMOs within their nation, or implement standards to determine the safety of GMOs that are produced within their nation. These actions include mandatory labeling of GMO products, requiring buffer zones around fields of GM crops, along with regularly providing reports on the effect of GMOs upon the surrounding environment and the implementation of these safety protocols.
