Since graduating with my Bachelor of Science degree in child development in 2012, I have worked for four daycare centers. Two of the centers were targeted toward upper-middle class families, and the other two were designed to aid low-income working parents. My experiences at the two types of centers, however, were all very similar. I witnessed large caregiver-to-child ratios and worked with many caregivers who had minimal education in child development or early childhood education. I became frustrated with the environments that I continued to find in daycare center situations. While working in daycare for many years and listening to parents concerns I would hear one complaint over and over. “Why is my child not potty trained yet?” Parents expect way too much from daycare workers. They expect the daycare to teach it all since they are paying a high price for their child to attend. Personally I did not want daycare workers teaching my son the things that I could teach him. I wanted to be the one to teach him everything, especially things like how to write his name and tie his shoe. When my son was in the preschool room, I asked the pre-k teacher what he should know by the end of pre-k. She gave me a list and he conquered everything on the list before he began pre-k. Many families have both parents working. Child care may be their only option, however I have witnessed too many parents abuse it. Some parents will bring their children into the daycare at 6:30 am and will not pick them up until 6:00 pm. These children do not get the quality time needed with their parents. There were many children who were better off at daycare than at home, so child care was definitely a positive atmosphere for them. Being able to bring a child to daycare to experience new roles in life and other than the life at home is beneficial. Being at a daycare center would help children to trust people other than their parents which is usually the primary caregiver. The time that is spent in daycare in a child’s life is a very important key in a child’s life. Putting a child into daycare allows the caregiver to be support their confidence, explore their surroundings, and able to be give age appropriate martials for them to relate to their peers and grow. The experience they received at home might not be the same experience they received at the daycare center.

Because a high percentage of children were spending majority of their time in a childcare setting, and with those programs ranging in quality, Bermuda was chosen as the site to further this research (Phillips, McCartney, & Scarr, 1987). Nine childcare centers that accepted children from infancy through preschool agreed to participate in the study. These centers were chosen in respect to the diversity of the children’s family backgrounds and director’s experiences in childcare (Phillips, McCartney, & Scarr, 1987). There are several important differences between the family home childcare and the center childcare. One difference in the family home childcare verses the center childcare is the individual attention each child receives. Another difference is the curriculum made available in each facility. Moreover, the cost for services rendered in a family home childcare is much lower than a center childcare. In addition, prior knowledge of cost, teacher-child ratio, and curriculum will help make the selection an easier task. Therefore, this paper will identify the three most significant differences between family childcare and center childcare in the areas of personal care, curriculum, and cost.

Even so it doesn’t change the issues of finding child care or makes them go away. When parents work, quality child care is a necessity. And it does not come cheap. For families with more than one child, child care can eat up one salary, leaving parents wondering both working is worth it. In saying that children learn best through play based experiences they learn from things they experience or items they can touch and hold. Children learn from the comments thier parents give, they pick up on the little things. Children who don’t participate in some type of quality education programs are 50 percent more likely to be placed in special education. Children are also 25 percent more like to dropout of school and are 60 percent more likely to never attend college. 40 percent are more likely to become teen parents ,and finally 70 percent more likely to become a teen parent.

While there are some caregiver’s that are only in the human service field to earn a paycheck and with the lack of parental involvement in their child’s life, it can make a caregiver’s job more challenging. Daycare centers serve as a stepping stone for a child’s future that will teach them how to establish appropriate skills and aid in the development of their cognitive abilities. Positive child interactions not only aid in the development of social and cognitive development, but also in the child’s self-esteem and it lets them know they are important and loved.

Is childcare a right or for the privileged few? As a rich nation, in which symbol of strong and high standard and quality of health should be leading for all undeveloped countries. The childcare system is supposed to help those in need, yet does the opposite effect. It’s exorbitantly expensive, under-regulated, and often unavailable for middle-class and the poor. As many presidents have stated that our children should be our priority yet I see poverty and unemployment. The Center for American Progress proposal should be accepted. In the future when I become a mother I am very concerned for the lack of health, safety and secure attachments that my child could be receiving at childcare centers. Knowing that I will most likely have to be a working mom this means that my child will most likely be placed in a childcare center.
