Becoming Immigration Lawyer

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (UCIS) oversees lawful immigration to US. They ensure the security of the nation by providing information to possible immigrants about citizenship benefits. Services provided by UCIS are Citizenship, Family member immigration, employment for foreign nationals, verifying an individual’s legal right to work in the US, Humanitarian programs, Adoptions, and civic integration. UCIS faces an ongoing challenge to maintain integrity and innovation while dealing with potential terrorist exploiting the US immigration system.

As I look at my future in law school and my eventual career as an Assistant U. S. Attorney (AUSA), I am forced to ask myself, “How will I achieve all of this?”. I started this path all the way back in high school, although then it was a road to a different goal. At first, I wanted nothing more than to be a prosecuting attorney and to argue in court. I prepared myself as best I could during my undergraduate years. I took extra courses and had several legal internships to help prepare me for my journey. However, as I have grown as a person and experienced more of the legal system, my career goals have grown as well. Upon learning more about the federal courts, I aimed my sights higher for my career goals, to become an AUSA.

After high school, I am going to attend Texas A&M to get an undergraduate degree in public economics and after that I will pursue further education at the Texas A&M Law School. I am going to get a degree in law so that when I graduate I can be a partner in my family's law firm. For the past couple of years I have toyed with the thought of either going to join the marines or being a lawyer but in the end I came to the conclusion that becoming a lawyer was the best bet for me; three generations of my family have done it and I would like to fill their shoes and carry out tradition.

This paper explores the career of an immigration lawyer. It goes through the different possibilities within the career, and the different opportunities to choose from. This paper examines the different areas in which an immigration lawyer can focus on; not only does it explore the options for a lawyer but also gives brief descriptions of the EOIR, USCIS, BIA, and ICE which are different areas of immigration in which an immigration lawyer has to work with or against to help whomever they are representing. The EOIR stands for Executive Office of Immigration review; USCIS is United States Citizenship and Immigration Services; BIA is Board of Immigration Appeals; and ICE is Immigrations and Customs Enforcements. It also briefly describes the necessary requirements for becoming a lawyer, and more information regarding the desired career. Along with information about the various possibilities within the career, it will also explain a brief outline of the history of immigration and how the career option came about.

I am who I am today because of my parents, first my dad worked so hard in order to be able to pay to get our papers and be able to legally come into the country. The immigration process took more than 10 years. We were only able to see my dad once a year because he was here working and saving up to bring the family together. In July of 1998 just 3 months before I was born my sister Elena passed away before being able to come into the country, she waited for so long to reunite with my dad and it didn't happen she left before her dream came into reality. It was the 11th, the day that we arrived. My dad and my sister had already made it, and it was really late. My flight landed, and so had 16 others. We off of the flight, and headed straight for immigration. Last time we came, immigration took 5 minutes, but this time, it took 45!
