I am interested in becoming a master-level social worker to gain the skills necessary to become a well-rounded advocate for change. Likewise, I am interested in having the opportunity to work with faculty who are conducting research and making an impact in the Charlotte community. As a social worker, I plan on working towards eliminating the school-to-prison pipeline, which directs youth into the juvenile and criminal justice system without taking into consideration how social problems, such a poverty, abuse, and drugs, directly affects their behavior. In addition, I would like to tackle the issues surrounding adolescent sexuality, including teenage pregnancy, STI transmission, and sex education in schools. My target population are vulnerable youth within urban cities. Since The University of North Carolina Charlotte is located in one of the largest and most diverse cities in the nation, I have decided to seek admission into the MSW program. Having the opportunity to utilize the skills I will be learning in the classroom while working hands on with my target population is of utmost importance to me. Social work is more than a profession; it is a passion. To improve social justice, advance human rights, and advocate for causes and individuals, I dropped my criminal justice major to work towards a degree in social work. While in high school, I stood up for the rights of the unborn, because the value I base my practice on holding the value of human life in high regards. No matter a human beings age, race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or other identifying characteristics should he/she/they be susceptible to lesser rights than their counterparts. Further, the wide range of experiences offered and obtained in the Bachelor of Social Work program at Grand Valley State University have adequately prepared me to enter the profession with immense knowledge on human development and the social environment while possessing the curiosity to further my comprehension
The following ‘outcomes’, need to be met, to show your assessor competency of your work practices.
Before starting the social work major, I did not have a lot of experience in the social service field. It was not until course 293 that I gain a little experience in the social services field. Through this experience, I decided to continue my internship at the same agency for both 410 and 492 social work course. The agency that I am interning at is Safe Space Youth Center. The youth centers are helps to nurtured young people between the ages of 14-25 years old. The center also counsel and support individuals who have nowhere else to turn. The center helps young people find a refuge from the challenges they face coming of age in low-income neighborhoods – from homelessness to gang violence and limited job opportunities.
The world is full of social injustices. Human beings are faced with these injustices every day. Some people have it harder than others. A few social injustices humans face are poverty and economic disparity, discrimination, oppression, racism, and even more unfairness. This is where the profession of Social Work is essential. Starting from being a certified nursing assistant, to becoming a unit secretary for a hospital that specialize in wound care, I have always known that I wanted to help individuals in need. However, I noticed that I was not happy with helping individuals in medical need. It wasn’t until I decided to continue my education that I introduced to the world of social work. Going up with a single mother that suffered from drug abuse, my family depended on social services for a lot of assistance, from everything such as food stamps to family counseling. This life experience helped guide my thoughts on pursuing social work as a career. I know that I want to help individuals that are down on their luck, but I want to take it one step farther, by providing individual counseling to adults that may need more one on one time, than what is normally given from a social service agency. Counseling will also give me a chance to do what I love most and that is to talk and get to know the individuals that I am helping make like changing decisions. Working as a clinical social work has my interest because it does not put limits on what I can do or who I can help, and it will set me up for my future goal of becoming a licensed clinical social worker. Being my own boss and changing my community is my dream job, opportunity and goal. I am currently on my way with changing my community and living my dream, because I am currently working for a non-profit
Social workers are each created in unique ways. Some are affected personally or by issues, people, and/or situations around them. I carry my own personal experiences from good to bad ones. Becoming a master level social worker provides me with a larger spectrum to where I could dedicate myself. Accomplishing a master degree in social worker puts me a step closer to obtaining a licensure, being a therapist, a supervisor, a program director, and many other things. As social workers we carry different roles which can be define by whom we work for, as to working with individual (micro), institutions (mezzo) or within a system (macro).
As a young girl, I watched about three different social workers come to my house for my older sister. Each social worker took a different approach and had a different effect on my family. Although the social workers were there for my sister, everything that was done included my family as a whole. As I was watching each social worker, I realized some of the pros and cons of the career and I became interested. At that time, I was unsure of what I wanted to become once graduating from high school. The only thing I was sure about was that I wanted to help others and I liked children. I knew my stomach was too weak to become a nurse or doctor, so I had to think of other options. By watching these social workers, it helped to make my decision. No
Growing up my grandmother always told me to “Never be afraid to do what is right.” This is something that I live by growing up and what lead me to want to be in the helping profession. My grandmother was not a social worker, but she was very active in her community and she advocated and provided support for the community. She did exactly what a social worker would do. Growing up I wanted to have a career where I would be making a difference in others’ lives and “do what is right”.
I am graduating Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Public Health. I decided to study health because the subject is of interest to me personally and professionally. Throughout my coursework in the public health program, I was introduced to numerous problems that face the healthcare industry today as well as health problems on a global scale. When these problems arose in class, I would find myself thinking about ways that I could solve these problems that people were facing in our society. I want to take on health problems and assist children and parents in hospitals with grieving, coping and processing the healthcare system. I wanted to be able to help navigate the rough waters of hospital and healthcare systems. With my knowledge of health and my desire to help people, I want to pursue a career path where I would be able to work one on one with people that are in need of assistance especially with medical decision and aid in the coping process. I am deciding to pursue a Master’s in Social Work because I feel this will best help me move forward with my career goals.

I chose social working as my career because many other people go through tough situations and have a difficult time talking to relatives or friends to help them through a tough situation. I thought of becoming a social worker so I can have the ability to change the lives of others. Social work is one of those careers you can truly make a difference in people’s lives. I want to become a social worker because life isn’t about just helping yourself it’s about helping others as well, which is what social workers do for a living. Child and family social workers protect children and families in need of assistance. Many families and children don’t feel comfortable talking to just anyone about obstacles they have faced in their lives which is why
In order to be the most effective social worker we can be, it is critical to reflect and analyze who we are and what has happened to us in our personal lives. Doing so will help us be mindful of how these things may impact our work with our clients. The Adverse Childhood Experiences survey is one way of assessing where we may have to start addressing our personal experiences. Once we are aware of how our experiences impact our work, we can strive to protect our clients, so that we can provide the quality of services our clients deserve.
A social worker has a very important job. Social workers help children and families in need of food, homes, and health care. They help children have a brighter future. There are many different types of social work. There are mental health, child and family, elementary, and high school social workers.
The growing elderly population is becoming a serious problem in many countries including the United States. As a result, enhancing the quality of care and promoting the well-being for elderly patients are among concerns that every family have been questioning. Many disabled, bedridden or in need of long term care elderly need help to be able to get a good quality of care with a limited budget. The current economic is making this situation worse as cost of medical care and cost of living is escalating, especially in the Bay Area. This problem resonates in me and I hope to someday work on finding a solution. This is the reason why I want to apply or Master of Social Work at CSU East Bay. I believe with skills and knowledge through this program, I will be able to reach out and provide appropriate methods to meet the need and to help elderly people live better.
