BART plays a critical role in the Bay Area economy. BART employs about 3,269 Bay Area residents, and passengers spend about $400 million per year on retail purchases in San Francisco. The original $1.5 billion investment in the BART system now has an anticipated replacement value of $21 billion. BART’s FY 2014 operating budget is $796.6 million. The FY 2014 capital budget is $737.3 million. BART has a total mileage of 104. The A-line from Fremont to Lake Merritt, 23.8 miles; the M, W and Y-line from Oakland West to Millbrae, 27 miles; the R-line from Richmond to MacArthur, 10.6 miles; the C-line from Pittsburg/Bay Point to Rockridge, 29.3 miles; and the L-line Dublin/Pleasanton to Bay Fair, 10 miles. There are approximately 37 miles of
The documentary San Francisco 2.0 examines how San Francisco city officials have given tax breaks to the Silicon Valley tech industry to move to San Francisco. These new techs companies have brought in a lot of wealth to the city, but at a cost. The majority of the low-income natives are being evicted or having their rents raised so high that they can't afford them. The gentrification of the city has impacted low-income districts (for example, the mission district known for its Latin immigrants) that the residents and the culture are being displaced. I believe the documentary is important for the study of the issue of gentrification because San Fransisco was known for being-counter culture, caring for the arts and for civil progress. The housing
The West Coast City (City) was a huge and successful organization with a staff of 7,500 and an annual budget of approximately $800m. The City had own a great reputation with its well engineered and designed architectural skylines and a city that was made for the beauty and comfort of pedestrians as well as drivers and bicyclists. In fact, the City had become one of the top 10 places in the world that it was rated most desirable to live in.
The governing core of South San Francisco is the city council, which creates municipal laws and the overall policy, decides how to expend treasury, assigns members to all consultative local businesses and represents the city officially. Bay Area Rapid Transit(BART) system provides residents in Bay Area with convenient and rapid transportation service among nine counties [1]. After the concept of BART was born in late 1940, the BART board of directors was created in 1957 which had 12 members and controlled the whole BART project. They entitled a consortium of 3 engineering companies Parsons, Brinkerhoff-Tudor-Bechtel (PBTB) to direct the construction of BART which began about 1963 [4]. BART system tried to apply many innovative technologies that had never been used in other commuter system, and one of them was the Automated Train Control (ATC) System, which was entitled to the Westinghouse Electric Corporation with a 26-million-dollar contract to design, install and tune the whole ATC system [3][4]. From 1969 to early 1971, three engineers whose work were related to different aspects of ATC expressed their concerns about the way the ATC system was being developed to their management. Holger Hjortsvang, a systems engineer, and Max Blankenze, a programmer analyst, criticized that the development of ATC was lack of supervision from Both BART board and PBTB. At the same time, Robert Bruder, an electrical engineer criticized the non-professional way the ATC system was designed and installed, and the unrealistic opening schedule [4]. After a long waiting without any significant response from their managers to their concerns, they decided to take actions and reported the issues directly to a BART board member with
In 2016 Mercury News listed San Francisco as the third most expensive place to live in the country. Also in the top ten (number five) was the San Jose, Sunnyvale, and Santa Clara area in the South Bay. The numbers helped to validate what our group believes, that it is very expensive to live here. We chose to consider the problem of the high cost of living in the Bay Area and how it has affected the area. Part of the reason that the housing in the Bay Area has become more expensive is an influx of highly paid employees. As one of the main hubs for tech jobs in the world, the Bay Area attracts small startups to huge companies such as Google. Mercury News reported that the average wage in Santa Clara County is 59% above the national average

The NFL landscape changed greatly Thursday as the San Diego Chargers officially relocated to Los Angeles joining the Rams. This move has been discussed for the last three years so it's not much of a surprise, but I feel terrible for the city of San Diego and their fans losing part of their identity has to be a hard pill to swallow. The Chargers owner Alex Spanos is partially to blame for this move because I don't think the invested enough in his organization to make them perennial contenders year after year.
Fifteen years ago Merced and Redding were in a battle for the next University of California. Even though Merced was located close to several other University of California campuses, the school was built in Merced. The residents of the northstate are now patiently waiting for their chance at a new university. In January of 2015, discussion began regarding another new campus; a campus centered around STEM (science, technology, engineering and math.)
As the bay area technology boom continues, so has one of residents’ basic needs: the cost of housing. According to U.S. Census data five of the top seven fastest growing counties in California are in the bay area, with the fastest growing county being Alameda (2010). Since the 2010 census, it was estimated Alameda would add a little over 100,000 residents by August of 2014. With the increased population the cost of living has also increased, especially housing costs. From January 2014 to January 2015, the average rent in Oakland increased by approximately 20 percent in a city struggling to deal with housing demands (Zillow, 2015).
Santa Ana is one of several pueblos, or villages, on the Tamaya Reservation in New Mexico, and like any small municipality, it struggles with waste management and using resources to their fullest potential. Communities such as this are challenged by increasing waste production due to increasing populations and decreasing ability to manage the influx of waste. Modern-day tactics have taken to producing more by products that are not being used and recycled to their full potential. The utilization of landfills across the country, which, while inexpensive, do not offer sustainable waste management solutions. However, communities are looking into alternate options that would be more beneficial in the long run, both in terms of environmental impact
The Historically Underutilized Business Zones (HUBzone) is a program created under the Small Business Reauthorization act of 1997. The goal of HUBzone is to “help small businesses in urban and rural communities gain preferential access to federal procurement opportunities.” The program was designed so an increase in federal contract opportunities could in turn promote employment opportunities, investment, and economic development in designated HUBzones. HUBzones are defined as nonmetropolitan counties, qualified census tracts, and lands within an Indian reservation. In order to achieve this goal, almost all federal agencies are required to award 3% of prime contracts to businesses with HUBzone certification. Currently the federal government spends approximately $600 Billion on prime contracts that results in $18 billion in federal contracts awarded to HUBzone contractors. (SBA)

California State is on the west coast of the United States of America. According to the Census, the state’s population consists of 38,802,500 people which make up approximately 12 % of the country’s total population in 2014. Even though the state has the largest population size in the country, its population intensity remains low due to the fact it is also the 3rd largest state of the nation. Its area covers 158,706 square miles. The state is an incredible visiting place due to its large varieties of attractions. The capital city of the state is Sacramento, and the state’s most populous city is Los Angeles, which is also the second most populous in the whole country, second only to New York City. Although the two cities are within
With California being the largest state in our union and holding the biggest population of people in the country, it would be only wise to build fast and reliable means of public transportation between it rather large cities. With the political forces in place in our country, the policymakers control the outcome of most of the public transportation in America. The California bullet train is one of the projects that have gained much attention by the political powers of our great country. In an article in the Los Angeles Times, U.S stands by California
Even though the price of native plants and trees are more expensive than usual, there are many existing companies that support people to plant the native plants and trees such as giving away the grant and seed for the volunteer. As a Merced resident, I found out the solution to achieve the native plants and trees by applying for the volunteer in order to grant money and seeds from other private supporters. Since those supporters offer everything for people to do so, why don’t people accept those offers? With that in mind, since the native plants and trees are highly expensive than usual, the support from free grants and seeds could be the solution for Merced people to restoring the native plants and trees in order to create a healthier environment.
