Many historians and believe that the Battle of Little Round Top was one of the most significant and famous battles of Gettysburg because of the quick thinking and audacity of the leader’s that held one of the most important lines of defense of the Union army. The battle of little round occurred on the second day of The Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. It took place on terrain that turned out to be valuable to both the Union and Confederate armies. Early on in the occupation of Little Round Top it was not classified as key terrain to the union army. Earlier on that same day it was merely used as hill for signal Soldiers to signal the movement of large Union Army formations. Soon after the detection of the approach of confederate Soldiers, Little Round Top quickly because a very important piece of terrain to retain.

Lee’s plan was to conduct a flank attack in the southern part of the Gettysburg battlefield. The plan consisted of the corps, led by Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, to attack from the southwest along the Emmitsburg Road and envelop the Federal line of troops. Gen Longstreet believed that maneuvering around the Union’s left flank before attacking would be the best course of action. His subordinates objected this decision because their men were weary wearing from marching for several hours and in need or rest and resupply, but the still followed their orders. Shorty after receiving their orders the confederate corps began their movement. On their approach one of Gen. Longstreet’s forward brigade reconnaissance elements led by Brig. Gen Kershaw observed the Union army signal unit on top of little round top.
