In the last 50 years, countless heroes have been created or shown through film. One of the most interesting, modern, fictional heroes that we have seen is the Batman played by Christian Bale, otherwise known as the Dark Knight in the Dark Knight series. Even after more than a thousand years since the creation of the epic poem Beowulf, similar characteristics of the character Beowulf are still seen in fictional heroes such as Batman. Although on the surface Beowulf and Batman seem very different, many of their basic characteristics are very similar including their motivation, the people that doubted them, their love for their homeland, and the personal sacrifices that they made for the greater good. This juxtaposition is proof that humans throughout history have gone through the same thought process when creating their heroes.
One of the many similarities between Batman and Beowulf is their origins. Batman and Beowulf alike were born and raised in the city/kingdom that he aimed to protect. Because of this similarity, the

In Batman this is more true than in Beowulf, but nonetheless, the archetype remains strong in both stories. In Beowulf, only one person, a man named Unferth, seems to truly doubt the hero when he questions his past successes. This dubious man is soon silenced by a simple conversation where Beowulf proves him wrong. This aspect of both heroes definitely seems to be more complicated with Batman. Instead of only one or a few people expressing serious doubt in Batman’s ability, it is almost the entire city that expresses concern. Batman only has a few people that believe in him including Commissioner Gordon, Batman’s butler Alfred, and a few citizens of Gotham. Despite their differences, Batman and Beowulf both contain one of the key elements in a hero’s story; people who try to pull them down, and the people who express nothing but
During both the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the hero figure remained an important character for authors, but it was shown in different ways. While it was still important in both times, the definition of hero changed. During the Middle Ages a hero was someone who possessed bravery, fortitude, and loyalty. This changed during the era of the Renaissance where the hero was someone who possessed values of a Protestant: fidelity, hope, and charity. These ideas of a hero can be seen through Beowulf and the Redcrosse Knight. Though there are differences in the definition of a hero, there are similarities in the ways in which the two characters are portrayed fulfilling their heroic duties.
Superman, Spiderman, and Batman are heroes! They possess the two traits that are needed in western civilization to be considered a hero: wisdom and fortitude. These modern heroes have wisdom and fortitude. Did Beowulf possess these traits? Beowulf shows he is a hero through both his wisdom and fortitude throughout his adventures. Beowulf is a great hero because he possesses both wisdom and fortitude.
In the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde it is said that “The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.” This shows that none of us are free from temptations and there is no way to overcome it, you must give in. In the D.C. Universe movie “Suicide Squad” Cara Delevigne’s character The Enchantress is a master of temptation. She uses her powers of manipulating magical energy, and people, to possess a woman named Jane Moone. The Enchantress uses Jane to take advantage of her government connections and obtain secret information in order to attempt world domination. The Enchantress slowly takes over Jane’s body as she convinces Jane to give up more control as time passes. In the epic poem Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney, the character Grendel’s Mother shares the archetype of the evil woman with the mysterious woman character in the ballad “La Belle Dame
Even though the hero’s in these stories are very interesting their tales would not be as rewarding if they did not have to face many adversities on the way. Some of the monsters in these stories like Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon from Beowulf, while the Odyssey has many monsters but some if the main ones are Cyclops, the suitors, and Poseidon. The culture in Beowulf was more about believing in a higher power and related monsters like Grendel and the dragon to religious meanings while the Odyssey is about looking inward because they are all things in your daily life. Even though there are similarities in the monsters in these stories are different in the way they are perceived.
Although there are many similarities, the few differences between Beowulf and Batman are quite evident. The epic
The novel Beowulf, A New Translation with an Introduction. by Burton Raffel, is an epic tale of good vs evil. Beowulf is the idealistic hero of the Middle Ages based on his generosity, strength, and courage. He puts his life on the line for an entire kingdom by protecting his people and proves his worthiness of a superior warrior. He is continually recognized for his strength and courage. Beowulf is not so different from modern day superheroes such as Captain America in the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron. Captain America defeats evil with his mighty shield and protects the people through his generosity to protect Earth, his strength, and courage. The protagonist of both the novel and movie share commonalities of a superhero.
Superman and Beowulf have some obvious similarities. For instance, Superman is just about the coolest superhero around, just like Beowulf was in the Middle Ages. First, a little background. In the story, Grendel had been stomping around the land, ripping people to shreds and eating them. Beowulf, a
Beowulf can be compared to Marvel universe’s Thor. Marvel has revived and modernized the Norse god, Thor, for 21st century audiences. Thor and Beowulf both demonstrate incredible physical strength in battle against villains. In the section “The Battle with Grendel” Beowulf
Secondly, Beowulf is daring and wild like Spider-Man. Beowulf is daring in many ways, and is not afraid to try new things and take risks. Beowulf will do whatever he has to in order to keep his country safe including going into a lake full of monsters. As stated in the book, “He leaped into the lake…” (Raffel, 1963, l.467). Spider-Man is different from Beowulf, in the fact that he can swing from building to building using webs that come from his fingers. Beowulf and Spider-Man are similar by the risks they take. Beowulf takes many risks to save his country. “Beowulf resolves to kill Grendel’s monstrous mother…” (Raffel, 1963, p.52). Beowulf is daring and takes many risks.
Heroes, from Beowulf to Superman our cultures have always created heroes. We may always have political, social, economic and religious differences, but at the end of the day we all have one thing in common, heroes. They help define who we are and what we want to be. They give us hope and inspire us to head in the right direction. They show us that good will always triumph over evil and that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Heroes give us the inspiration we need to overcome problems in our own lives and that is why we create them. Beowulf perfectly embodies the idea of a hero. He defeats the evil Grendel and his mother, slays the dragon and saves his people. He is
Heroes. From the timeless tale of Beowulf to the well-known chronicles of Superman, cultures all throughout the world have taken it upon themselves to weave a fabrication of a fantastic being, said being a hero of a sorts, that always makes it to defeat the bad guy and save the day. Even whence we as human beings always tend to have our political, social, economic and religious differences, at the end of the day we all have one thing in common that fills our dreams with hopes of the future, of safety, of a peaceful life; heroes. Helping to define who we are and what we want to be, giving us hope and inspire us to head in the right direction, showing us that good will always triumph over evil and that anything is possible if you set your
Most of us have heard of modern day heroes such as Spiderman, Superman, and the Hulk. Each is a hero to many children. Heroes are introduced to people early on in life usually as fictional characters, but as children grow older their perceptions of heroes alter. The characteristics of a hero are usually based around the ideas of a society or culture. In the epic Beowulf, the main character is thought of as a hero. Beowulf, a pagan warrior and the main character of the epic, shows certain characteristics such as bravery, loyalty, and generosity, which portray him as a hero. It is interesting how modern day heroes show the much of the same qualities as Beowulf.
King Arthur and Beowulf are both heroes in their stories which causes them to have many similarities in their traits but, they have differences in their traits as well. Arthur and Beowulf are both courageous leaders. They fight fearlessly for themselves and their people in battle. A difference between Arthur and Beowulf is their ability to depend on others. Arthur depends on others many times in The Once and Future King while Beowulf depends only on himself in Beowulf. Despite the differences, Beowulf and Arthur still have many things in common such as their wisdom. Both men are wise and make incisive decisions in battle and in leading. Their wisdom on the battlefield is a heroic trait that both men possess. Another heroic trait that they share is their courageousness.
As compared to more traditional heroes as Beowulf, Robin Hood doesn't appear to fit with his criminal ways. Robin Hood’s actions are different than Beowulf’s but still portray the ideals of the time. Beowulf is a mighty hero from Anglo-Saxon time. He was a mighty and strong lord.
Heroes bring a hope to people whom they protect. Heroes bring people joy and bring a sense of relaxation to the people of their society because they play such an important role in lives everywhere. Heroes are complex rather than unembellished because they can fight dragons to defend their kingdom, or create a non-profit foundation to enhance the quality of life for more than 2,000 underprivileged kids. Heroes in our present day can be very complex because a person’s viewpoint on a hero’s life can be a completely different than the way another person looks at that same hero. Thomas Davis Sr. can be extremely comparable to Beowulf but they also have major differences.
