Recently, the issue of allowing transgender people access to public facilities according to the gender they identify with has caused much debate throughout the United States. The bathroom bill seeks to control access to public facilities of transgender individuals, based on the gender they were assigned at birth. In 2015, bills were passed stating entering a bathroom not assigned to a person at birth was a crime. Surrounded by misconception, the bill does “not legalize harassment, stalking, violence, or sexual assault.” Since the bill arose, there have not been a rise in violence or other incidents in the states protecting the transgender rights (Transgender Equality). Transgender rights and policies have always been an ongoing debate. In the article, “Bathroom Battlegrounds and Penis Panics,” Schilt and Westbrook (2015) argued that in order to push gender equality forward, we must consider the rights of transgender people by allowing them to have access to bathrooms that support their gender identity rather than their biological sex. Many parents show concern for their children that use public restrooms. Citizens are worried for their children that may be preyed upon by transgender men and women within a public restroom setting. Most males that are against transgenders using public restrooms, are concerned with their wives and daughters that they cannot protect once they have entered the female restroom. Gender equality is a pressing issue in the United States. The definition of gender, and the rights that accompany them, is constantly being updated and adjusted. The LBGT community is fighting for equality after being repressed for many years. Because of this sudden movement, social issues are sparking outrage and debate on whether a certain law or right for LBGT people is to be initiated. In many instances, these issues dominate the media, and cause for chaos on both sides of the spectrum. The bathroom controversy exemplifies this. The LBGT community argues that anyone should be able to use whichever bathroom that matches with their identified gender. Members of the LBGT community should not be able to use whatever bathroom they please.

Some people may be confused as to why gender neutral bathrooms are a controversy. This controversy stems from the trans* rights movement’s desire for safety and acceptance. Trans*, short for transgender, is an umbrella term that is used to describe people who identify as a gender they were not assigned at birth, this includes female to male, male to female, agender, and non-binary individuals while cisgender, cis for short, is used to describe someone who identifies with the gender they were assigned at birth. Some trans* individuals many pass as their identified gender and face harassment in the restroom if they are outed as trans*, likewise some trans* individuals do not pass or have not

It is 2016, and today's society has become a more diverse community than ever. Although more people have become open-minded there is still one issue that is considered to be controversial. The issue among transgender people, and the creation of neutral gender bathroom. This issue has become controversial between the transgender community and the government. The reason behind this problem is that the transgender community in the recent years has gain momentum in being accepted by society, but not the government. In my case, I believe that the creation of neutral gender bathroom can bring a negative impact both psychological discomfort and physical danger to the population.

As our world develops gradually, we are to the point in time to see new serious disagreements and formal discussions surface, one of these being the issue of whether transgender individuals should be allowed to use the bathroom of the gender they identify themselves as. While many are at an unpleasant emotion, caused by the belief of the risk of sexual violence in bathrooms, or fail to acknowledge transgender individuals as the gender they identify, there is something to be said about this issue, transgender individuals should be allowed to use the bathroom of their choice.

Once again my mother and I were watching the news. As the anchor spoke in the background about the on going controversy of transgender bathrooms. I asked my mother what her favorite hobbies were.

In dangerous of a person of the opposite sex using the restroom they prefer are very obvious, but is every person out to cause dangerous to other people in the restroom. Some people’s gender evolves differently, and might not fit rigid traditional notices of female and male. In past generations, it has been clear to society that males and females use segregated bathrooms. It is also known that the rate of transgender people has been growing over the past years. Transgender people constantly face troubles when using a bathroom in public. Nevertheless, as society has become more aware of the transgender population and the issues that they face, many schools have had to decide how they will respond about the issue of school bathrooms when students identify themselves as transgender. A school should be able to provide separate facilities based on sex, but must allow transgender students access to the facility which matches their gender identity.

Should everyone get their own bathroom? Why should one person’s discomfort take precedent to everyone else’s right to comfort? In America, there are 700,000 people whom identify as transgender. This equates to 0.3% of our population. Why should the tyranny of the minority overrule the other 99.7% of our citizen’s right to privacy? CONVICTED FELONS have the right of protection from unnecessary exposure to the opposite sex, shouldn’t young innocent children have the same privilege? I live in the metropolitan area of Washington D.C., and recently there has been some controversy over transgenders using public restrooms. This is a moral issue because it is a form of discrimination on transgenders. There are laws that have been put into place to protect them, and to give them rights to use the restroom of which they identify by. Recently a high school student by the name of Galvin Grimm, in Virginia sued his county school board. Galvin Grimm is a transgender male that was born a female. The case is Gloucester County School Board v. G.G. This came about because he decided to identify as a male his freshman year of high school. Galvin was able to use the boys restroom for a couple of months. It wasn’t until parents of students that attended the same school, found out about this young man.

In summary, the transgender desegregation of restrooms is a contentious topic that includes the topics of safety, discrimination, privacy and economics. Safety is a concern that can involve physical and sexual assault for the transgender person and cisgender women may become victims of sexual predators using restrooms under the guise of being transgender. Discrimination against restroom access for transgender individuals is currently complicated by a mixed-bag of laws and these would need to be amended to grant full access. Privacy is an issue that could merely be a perception bias that would need to be overcome in order to raise a level of comfort. Coming out as a transgender, identifying with a gender expression that differs from the assigned sex, has proven to be quite difficult through the ages. While the acceptance of transgender people has grown significantly higher throughout the years, people’s stance on them are still quite divided, and the uphill battle for transgender rights has proven this. Just giving transgenders the right to simply go to the bathroom they identify with has shown to be controversial according to the TIME cover Battle of the Bathroom. The TIME magazine makes sure to note the problem defiantly “far more than public facilities” (Scherer par. 9). Transgender rights are a problem that Jamison Green, president for World Professional Association for Transgender Health, thoroughly addresses in a report written by Alan Greenblatt for CQ Researcher. Jamison Green’s specific purpose in that report is to justify why transgender people deserve basic human rights like everybody else, as shown in society, through his use of facts, qualifiers, figurative language, counterarguments, and appeals to logic and values.
