I vividly remember my recruiting visit to the University of Connecticut. I had just led my team to a high school state and national championship. Among others, I had offers to play basketball at Stanford, Duke, and North Carolina but my true passion was to play at UConn. The recruiting visit turned out to be a memorable one. Our room at the Nathan Hale flooded due to a leaking toilet above, we had a flat tire on our rental car after the basketball game (that UConn lost), and on our ride back to Storrs, we ran over a large dead skunk in the road. However, I did not let these things deter me because what I remember most (other than Geno offering me a full scholarship) was Dr. Scott Brown and how he discussed the sport management curriculum.
“We Got Next”. This phrase is most commonly used around the asphalt when vying to play the next game of pick up basketball. Founded on April 24, 1996, the NBA Board of Governors approved the concept of a Women’s National Basketball Association. The Women’s National Basketball Association is the most prevalently known professional basketball league in the United States for women, most commonly referred to as its’ acronym WNBA. It was finally the ladies’ turn as they made their statement that they would be playing the next game. The first season for the Women’s National Basketball Association began in 1997. Sheryl Swoopes, one of the league’s first sixteen players, was the first player signed by the WNBA on October 23, 1996. She signed with the Houston Comets, one of the eight teams in the
UConn alumni are spread wide across the sports world. Whether it is playing in professional leagues like Shabazz Napier and Maya Moore or managing baseball teams like Billy Eppler UConn alumni are everywhere in the industry. Recently I had a chance to interview Marty Summa Jr. a sport management alumnus from UConn. Marty and I reviewed some of the aspects of his current job as well as his road to this position.
The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) was formed in 1981 when a group women coaches met at the Olympic Festival in Syracuse, NY. The initial meeting included legendary women basketball coaches Pat Summit, Kay Yow and Vivian Stringer. During the first year, the WBCA establishes a board of directors, creates a logo, and establishes Backboard Bulletin as its first publication. The WBCA started in Philadelphia before moving in 1985 to its current headquarters in Atlanta. The organization continues to grow in its influence and importance in the game of women’s basketball through educational programing, networking opportunities, information and news, legislative and rule changes, and representing a voice collectively of the membership to the NCAA and other governing bodies in women’s basketball.

The biggest reason why I wanted to attend college was for sports. I wanted to go into a great program with great people. My parents told me that lacrosse was a perk for college but the education portion was most important. I believe my coach Zach Nedbalski was a huge inspiration for my appearance here at Methodist University. When I was on my visit at Methodist, Zach made me feel at home with comforting words and his presence was very warming. He introduced me to the lacrosse
Athletics are a big attraction to many students when looking at colleges. When college sports programs have success, research done by Pope and Pope show that there is a boost in applications that the colleges receive from students. “Applications [after] a Championship add 7-8 percent, with a big effect in the immediate year and little effect after one year.” It was found that when colleges have winning athletic teams get more applications sent in from all levels of student and not just athletes. This is found true for basketball and football. Not only increase in applications is found but also found after success in football there is a growth in enrollment, this is not found true for basketball (Getz and Siegfried “What Does Intercollegiate Athletics Do…”). “David Schmidly the president of the University of New Mexico said “One of the most effective ways to market your university nationally is to have a really quality athletic program. It helps recruit faculty, students, and donors. It helps with the image of the whole university.” (qtd. in Getz and Siegfried “College Sports: The Mystery of the Zero-Sum Game.”)
The Ninth Commandment in the Bible states, “thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour” (Exodus 20:16). This Commandment is crucial to everyone who believes in God and studies the Bible. It applies to all forms of lying. If it is impossible for God to lie, why does everyone do it? The article titled, “Moral Truth” by All About Philosophy, explains how people's morals come into play when telling a lie. Everyone is entitled to their own morals, whether it is right or wrong, but the truth is something definite. With lying, you either did it or you did not. This is where moral truth comes into play. The Crucible by Arthur Miller was a fiction play, loosely based on events that happened during the Salem Witch Trials in Salem, Massachusetts
I want to be an extremely active coach concerning recruiting. As a coach, I would like to eventually coach at the collegiate level and having the ability to both network as well as produce players that are scholarship worthy is a way to portray my ability as a coach. As a coach, I want what is best for my players and I want them to truly love the sport. If they come to love the sport and would like to play on in college, I want them to be able to have that opportunity. I did not have any coaches that were active in helping me to know how to recruit myself. I think that if I would have had more information about recruiting then it would have benefitted me as an athlete. I will make sure that every freshman that comes into my program is aware of the NCAA Eligibility Center and how the recruiting process works regardless of whether I think they could play collegiately. As a coach, I will not know until
I am interested in attending UNCW first and foremost because they offer the Sports Medicine Program that I am interested in. I was born in WIlmington and I like the idea of going to college in my hometown to be near the beach and my family. My mom attended UNCW and is very proud of the education that she received. I have a cousin that recently graduated from UNCW, so it would be great to keep the legacy going. Growing up in Wilmington allowed me the opportunity to participate in the Little Seahawks Program as a kid, attend numerous basketball games and to participate in camps that were offered on campus. My family loved volunteering for the Leon Brogden Tournament, when it was held at UNCW. I even got to play in that tournament one year
The current NBA draft system is adapted since 1993 to improve the league’s competitive balance. A NBA franchise that has the worst record previous year will have the highest 25% chance to win the No.1 pick in the next NBA draft (Price, 2015). Drafting a valuable player will have the profound effects on the success of a NBA team for the following reasons. Firstly, a NBA franchise only needs to pay its rookie with the small-scale money, which ranges from $1 million to $5 million per season based on rookie’s draft position. Secondly, under the current collective bargaining agreement that allows a player to receive the maximum 5-year-long contract, a NBA team can have its drafted player for at least 9 years long if the player’s performance meets the team’s expectation. After the 4-year-long rookie contract expires, a NBA team will have the opportunity to keep its drafted player by offering him a qualifying offer or matching the contracts from other teams.
To be a college coach you have to be very dedicated and love the sport you are coaching. Being a college coach is very time consuming and a very hard job to land in the sports world. The competition that one faces when trying to get into the job field is fierce. This means that the job as a coach in the collegiate athletic career field is limited to a small percentage of the people that end up applying. These people need to be able to fulfill a variety of duties for their universities, and because of this it is important that anyone who is thinking of applying knows the difficulty that comes with the job (Greenwald, 2010).
The recruiting game is drastically different from what it was years ago, and the athletes who know that have an advantage over those who do not. Athletes in all sports can make a name for themselves during the offseason and catch the eye of college recruiters by attending camps and clinics, and by taking advantage of the internet. Having a realistic expectation with respect to athletic scholarship money is helpful. In addition to athletic scholarships, many colleges offer other types of financial assistance and the pool of available money to your child will be substantially increased with strong academic results.High school athletes regularly ask, "How do I get a college scholarship?" The answer, at first, seems simple: If you are good enough,
Being apart of a collegiate basketball team involves the usage of teamwork, leadership, and discipline. Sports teach the important lesson of working together, being the vocalist to help motivate others, and reaching goals in a reasonable time frame. These traits pass from the basketball court into the classroom and also into the community as well.
As an Athlete myself I have competed in a few years of AAU basketball. At almost all the tournaments that I played in it was mandatory that all the players viewed and went to a presentation about the recruiting rules and how is it was to break some of the contact rules. The biggest issue was that at a lot of theses tournaments there would be big Division I coaches there. Players would always try to look good for the coaches and even try to talk to them. Which back then was totally against the rules especially if they were still only sophomores in high school. Luckily now they have changed that so that now that in the summer of your sophomore year you can. This will open a lot of doors for coaches because they can have more time to build relationships with recruits as well as build more relationships. What I have also learned is how important recruiting has become over the years. Before things such as Ballislife and Hoopmixtape it was a lot harder for coaches to get film on out of state players. Now that theses websites exist it allows coaches to find prospects outside of their state they would like to pursue. Some thing that I did not know before reading this article was the restrictions on time and amount of expenses that could be spent on a recruit who comes for a visit. This rule is important because the NCAA is trying to restrict bribing of recruits with
Do you want your children taught what they should and shouldn't believe? In the United Kingdom, state school are required by the Education System Act 1944 to teach religious education. This encompasses a variety of religions but there is undoubtedly a heavy focus on Christianity in many non-denominational schools. These schools are designed to avoid religious discrimination, and yet they stick to one religion without thinking about those who do not follow it. Pupils from a range of faiths attend these schools, as well as non-religious students, and they should not have to put up with preachings that they do not believe in. They feel excluded from any religion-based activity they are made to take part in. Many non-denominational schools have
