“Think of a time when you were presented with an opportunity and took full advantage of it, wasted an opportunity you were given, or were denied an opportunity you should have had. How did this experience make you feel?” Sometime midway in July, I was given an opportunity to attend a basketball camp in Florida. Attending this camp and performing at a high level would really give me a boost this upcoming season. Studies show your; comprehensive skills, defensive tactics, and basketball IQ may potentially have major change.
Its camp day! Our half coordinated team shows up at the school ready to aboard the two vans that are ready for us. At this point I'm extremely ecstatic and ready to get to the camp. As we’re on our way to Florida everyone’s having a good time jamming out to the music.

It’s time for our first game and there’s the head coach from “Warner University” watching everyone. Being a starter in basketball gives you a little more exposure than the benchwarmers. The whistle sounds and it’s game time! “Bang!” says one of the commentators. The game’s tied 42-42, my coach and I made eye contact and he gave a fierce look which meant score the ball. The crowd’s roaring, at this point and I’m thinking to myself, “get a bucket
You’re can’t play, you’re just a girl. That’s what they told me when I decided I wanted to play basketball. I didn’t listen. Despite the naysayers I’m going continue doing what something I like and enjoy doing. I would like to attend The Wolfpack Woman’s Basketball camp to better my shooting skills, build my confidence and be a part of a team.
I read the book Summer Basketball, by Mike Lupica. This book was about a thirteen year-old boy named Danny Walker. Danny is a very small kid for his age, and is asked to attend a summer basketball camp. When he first gets to the camp, things start to go bad for Danny right away. He is placed in a cabin with eleven and twelve year-old kids instead of kids his own age. While at camp, Danny met some new friends who enjoy the sport, but were also bigger than him. He begins to lose interest towards the end of the camp, and comes with a plan to fake an injury so he would get sent home and not have to play. However his best friend, Tess, has a cabin across the lake from his camp. He uses her for motivation because he doesn’t want to disappoint her.

As we wind down this C-USA basketball season this article is taking a look at who has the hottest coaching seats in C-USA. This article and discussions similar to it are vital to the future of basketball in this conference. Don’t think so? Then you’ve not been paying attention to a historically bad season for C-USA basketball. Right now UAB at the top of the conference is projected only as a 14 or 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and NO TEAMS are currently projected to make the NIT. Before you try to blame this situation on conference realignment, consider the previous basketball success at several of our member schools. I do realize realignment has hurt us. This is the 20th anniversary of the C-USA basketball tournament and only two teams currently in C-USA have won that tournament. UAB is one team and the other left
Playing summer basketball has taught me a lot on and off of the court. I now have a different view on
Sports gave me confidence and a work ethic that has translated to life. I have traveled to countless states, out of the country, met people from all regions, and had amazing experiences; all credited to basketball. Basketball is a game of discipline and individuals who exhibit success have input a work ethic that exceeds their competition. The Rookie Sensation seeks to position youth to potentially get a free education, learn work ethic, applicable skills that translates to life, convene with other athletes with common goals, and meet successful professionals who used sports as means to success.
Our first game was at 9, but the players were supposed to be there at 8, so I thought that I should be there. Because it was a round robin, when I got to the gym East Grand and Steamboat were playing. I was beginning to get nervous because I did not want to let down the players that I was coaching. When the game that was going on reached the fourth quarter, I took my players to the locker room and went over our game plan. The game before ours ended, and my players began to warm up. I was getting more nervous now; this was the first time I had ever coached, and I did not feel like I was qualified enough to be coaching. Sure, I have been playing basketball since third grade, but I did not think that I should be coaching. The game started, and I soon realized that my patience level was not as high as I thought. I never was mean or yelled negatively; I tried to constructively help the players. During the whole game we were doing really well, and I was super happy. The players were running their offense and doing well on defense. During the end of the game I was feeling really well because I knew we were gonna
Ten seconds left of the game, and team is down a point in the state championship. Your team needs two points to win, one to tie the game and send to overtime. The coach calls time-out, and makes a creates a play for you to score the winning points. The, point-guard, the leader of the squad, looks you into the eye and says, “ You better win this for us, rookie.” He then gives you a hard shove, enforcing you to take, and make, the winning shot. The shove felt like it could push out of the arena, but you stay your ground. Time-in, the game resumes, as you feel a cold sweat down your back. The point-guard passes you the ball to shoot the ball. The ball is released from your hands, and you “AIRBALL!” As the crowd
The summer before seventh grade my mom and I were talking about school and what sports I was going to play. I knew that I was definitely be playing basketball, but my mom kept bringing up cross-country. She said she thought that I should try it because I have long legs, which is good for running. I always thought running sounded boring because all you do is move one foot in front of another. I decided to still try it because of my mom and because for all I knew it could be something I really enjoy. I didn’t enjoy much then, I didn’t have many hobbies. I did like art, but not that much, I only did it when I was really bored. I loved basketball, but even I knew I was completely horrible at that. No other sports really appealed to me and that is why I was going to give running a chance, because I was desperate for a hobby.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to score the winning touchdown, the walkoff home run, the game winning goal, or even the basket that won you the game? I haven’t done all of these, but I have had the privilege to do a couple of them. The things that have helped me with my athletic ability has been the teammates and coaches, the work ethic that I have and my family. Having the athletic ability that I have today, is shaping who I will be in the future.
I attended all training sessions and spent a great amount of time playing basketball since the thrill of winning games, of becoming better pushes me forward. I believed my efforts are worthy, since I had the advantage over other players in speed and keen awareness, and I trained harder than others every day. Basketball was the only thing on my mind. Then the time came to assemble the official school team to participate in formal basketball games. I thought for all my efforts
As an individual I love staying active, socializing with others, being dependable, and keeping busy. Playing Basketball for Flour Bluff ISD, since the seventh grade, has granted me the opportunity to achieve all of these goals. For some peculiar reason I have consistently felt that I lacked experience of which my peers had, and that I would never be able to acquire it. Soon after I started playing I became intimidated of my fellow teammates and worried about the time I felt I lost, due to beginning so late in my childhood. Without fail, I always feel a sense of accomplishment after making it through tryouts every year and as I approach my final season, it has become clear just how much of my life was devoted to Basketball, that I truly love it and how I am thankful to be a part of something much more than just a team.
The day was October 8th, 2014. I hardly played. One school day, my 5th teacher, Ms. Smit said, “flyers for the basketball team on the table” ordinarily I took one. Kids from 4th, 5th, and 6th grade came to try out for the team. After tryouts, a paper next to the nurse's office was hung up. The paper sheet named those who had made the team. Surprisingly, I made the team, most likely from my height. I felt like I shouldn’t have made the team. At the time, I barely started to play basketball. I went to the practices at school and tried to make myself a little bit better, since a tournament was about to begin in a few weeks.
Running into the gym with my team, knowing it was my last middle school basketball game, but first championship game I felt elated and truly blessed. My knees quivered with anticipation after seeing all the bleachers filled with people. After realizing even the press and other media was in attendance I grasped the moment like a newly elected president at his inauguration. I am warming up doing basketball drills, when I began to look at the flags on the gym wall depicting the history of the basketball team. The years and dates of the last championship game, Historically a championship game had not been won since 2007 . The more I stared at the flags, the more it made me want to win this game and make history in this gym. As the crowd and cheerleaders start to chant, cheer and get loud, I started to feel more comfortable and rowdy more than I had ever felt in any other game that I’ve played. Waiting for the referee to blow the whistle for jumpall to start. I felt my fingertips tapping the side of my leg, which for some reason gives me a sign to myself that I am pumped up and ready to play!
For most of my life, I was skilled in organized sports, especially soccer, which I had played for many years. After a successful soccer season my freshman year, I thought that I would make the JV team for sure. At tryouts, I went through the motions of each drill. I breezed through the conditioning tests, doing the bare minimum for each test. I didn’t try as hard as others, as I felt that I was more skillful than most of my peers.
