Baseball is America’s pastime. Baseball is a sport that is played with a bat, glove, and a baseball. The sport is popular worldwide. Countries around the world have developed their own leagues and have created teams in the leagues to play against each other. The age group for baseball players range from the ages of 5 to about 65. Some leagues are created with age restrictions on them so that play levels can be fair. For example, 5 years olds playing together would be more fair than an 18 year old player playing against the 5 year old. The 18 year old would have a better skill set than the 5 year old so the play would be unfair. The most popular baseball league in the is the Major League Baseball (MLB). The MLB is where the best baseball players in the world play. However, there can be only so many players that can play in the majors, so there are also different leagues where players can play. Baseball is a popular sport because of how entertaining it is to play and to watch. The group of people that play baseball have certain attire, behavior, and values that distinguish themselves from others.

The memories shared through generations of baseball can be pictured by many, the pickup game of all the neighborhood boys in the vacant lot down the street, the miraculous foul ball landing right in your lap, the classic summer day spent at the ballpark eating hotdogs and singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” and “Sweet Caroline.” But more recently, these classic memories are being replaced by those of overbearing Little League coaches who need to take a chill pill, boring games that go on for nine extra innings, and overpriced hotdogs that just don’t taste right.

Due to the growing popularity of baseball throughout the world the players of Major League Baseball (MLB) have become more diverse. Since 1950 when baseball started to grow in popularity the attendance per game has risen over 40%2.

Baseball is referred to as “America’s Pastime.” Many people argue it is one of the hardest sports to succeed in. Out of the four major sports in the United States, hitting a 95 mile per hour fastball is a goal only few can accomplish at a professional level. With only 750 players throughout 30 Major League Baseball (MLB) teams, the odds of making it to “The Show” are highly unlikely. To make it to the big leagues as an African American player was an even harder feat to accomplish in the mid to late 1900’s. Baseballs Greatest Experiment tells the story of how MLB was an all white mans game up until the death of Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis in 1944. Team owners and the commissioner did not want to integrate African Americans into the MLB; “some experts argued that the absence of blacks in the majors stemmed from their lack of talent, intelligence and desire” ( Tygiel, 32). Since Jackie Robinson overcame many obstacles, baseball players and fans alike can argue that he paved the way for African Americans in baseball and challenged societal social structure.

Sticks and stones may break my bone but that is far from the truth.  Personally, I believed I played baseball proficiently, but various people repeatedly told me I could not. I found myself; Therefore, I  realized I was not as good as I thought I was.   At first, it hurt me physically and emotionally, but later I realized the hurt I felt affected me much greater.

Baseball has been one of Americas favorite sports ever since it was created. As Babe Ruth once said, “Baseball was, is and always will be to me the best game in the world.” Through time though other sports started to emerge such as soccer, football, and basketball, but America never had quite the passion towards them that they had with baseball. It is rare to find someone that does not like baseball because of how long the sport has been around. It is reasonable to believe that baseball is the greatest sport out there. Baseball is a one of a kind sport because it has a great history, one can go to college in the four different areas it offers, such as hitting, pitching, defending, base running, and finally one must be mentally tough to play it.

Before that time, there were some games that resembled it and that used the same concept that baseball does, such as cricket. Through the 271 years, there are some similarities in the game from then to now, however, the differences greatly outweigh the similarities.
