The company/firm that I decided to write about is Barnes and Noble. Barnes and Noble’s are the largest retail bookseller in the United States. They first opened their doors in 1883 in New York City. In the past century, they have grown and expanded all over the United States. Currently the company is not doing as well as it did in the past due to the invention of eBooks offered in tablets as well as Barnes and Noble’s ebook product known as the NOOK. Barnes and Noble have deemed the NOOK the number one cause of their declining sales. Though the company is losing money they are remaining confident to the public. Their mission statement states “To operate the best Omni-channel specialty retail business in America, helping both our customers and booksellers reach their …show more content…
Barnes and Noble can make themselves very unique by offering a reoccurring a competitive subscription to their customers rather than making their current customers have to go online or walk into the store to buy a specific book. This technique has been very successful for Amazon when the Kindle was introduced. “One thing a forward-thinking retailer will likely have to do to survive going forward is really reinvent the business model. Here’s an idea for a bookstore: How about borrowing from the now-accepted SAAS (Software As a Service) approach and aim for recurring subscription revenue instead of transactional revenue. Set up an e-library which, for a modest fee, gives you books when you want them for as long as you want them, and thus makes it worthwhile to step up from free public libraries that have wait lists and lending-time limits” Gerstein, M. (2016, June 1). This will put them ahead of the curve in regards to other bookstores who are also suffering and trying to stay

While value is a competitive advantage for Barnes and Noble’s retention of market share, their prices are not low enough to impose a low cost strategy.
The mission of Lowe's was first introduced in February of 1990. Leonard Herring sought to start the decade with a clear statement of Lowe's mission. "Lowe's is in the business of providing the products to best help our customers build and improve their homes. Our goal is to be their first-choice store for these products." Since 1990, Lowe's has expanded its mission to improving the communities in which its customers and employees reside. The company has also committed itself to providing customers with sustainable products and services in order to protect the environment for future generations.
The mission statement at UNC Wilmington states that they are committed to student engagement, creative inquiry, critical thinking, thoughtful expression and resposible citizenship. These qualities are things that every student should look for when the big deciosion of where to go to college comes up. College is a big stepping stone for students, it shouldnt be about where all your friends are going, or where the parties are gonna be. The education and enviorment you are wanting to be in is what matters. I have dreams and aspirations of becoming a nurse, getting a BSN degree. UNCW has factors that stand out against any other school. Job prospects and salary are high, this means that when I leave UNCW I wont have to worry about whether or not
Urban Outfitters, often referring to itself as simply ‘UO’, is the corporate entity that includes retail chains Urban Outfitters, Anthropolgie, Free People, Terrain, and BHLDN, has became the greatest global retailer in the world. Back in the beginning, the first Urban Outfitter store was opened on a street nearby Pennsylvania University in 1970 by Dick Hayne and Scott Belair, both are the company’s chief executive officers (CEO). The first store’s name was Free People and it sold furniture, second-hand clothing, accessories, and decorative items. The store’s target market was young people, especially college students and it continues to dominate this market segment.
In 1991 she created a new magazine called “Martha Stewart Living” that would become a huge thing

Barnes & Noble are taking different tacks with regard to agreements with authors agents, and publishers. Amazon is pulling content off the market and padlocking it to their Kindle. In response, Barnes & Noble is refusing to stock Amazon published titles in its brick-and-mortar stores. Barnes & Nobles' investment in the well-received, well-reviewed Nook appears to have been a solid business decision, the ripples of which will continue to be felt for some time. In fact, the Nook is the proverbial finger in the dike as the waters of Amazon continue to threaten the very infrastructure of the publishing business by eroding the relationship between publishers and bricks-and-mortar stores.
The bookstore chain has been decreasing in profit in the US over the past 20 years. Most of the books retailers are shutting down their operations and only a few are still operating in the country. Barnes and Noble has become the largest bookseller in the book retailers industry. The firm has integrated its business philosophy into web presence though eBook marketplace. This business strategy assisted the firm to be able to reach a large scale customers and remain as a strongest competitor in the book retailing market.
The company that I have chosen for this assignment and project is Lowe 's Companies, Inc. Lowes strongly focuses on the mission statement “helping the customers to improve their homes”. The company started in 1921 as a small store in North Carolina. Great success and high demand of Lowe’s products led to an increase in the number of stores. By 1955, there were five more functional stores. Rapid growth took place around 1960s. Carl Buchan was one of the founders of Lowe’s, who died in year 1960. Exactly a year later in 1961, the company went public. This was the time when Lowe’s was given its name. Initially it was called North Wilkesboro Hardware Company. By 1979, Lowe’s established more than 50 stores in the United
Best Buy, a familiar retailer in the technology world, is struggling to stay on top. Online and mass stores have cornered the market in terms of convenience, customer service and price matching. The recent closing of over two hundred stores alongside falling sales has experts predicting that the giant won’t be in business long. Using a results-only work environment (ROWE), Best Buy has removed the customer from the equation and forced many employees out. A marketing disaster, Best Buy must change its marketing strategy from sales-based to a customer-based to stay afloat.

The TOMS Company offers more than what meets the eye. Most people only know TOMS as a shoe retailer. However, the company has expanded since its beginnings in 2006. Boasting a collection of shoes, bags, apparel, coffee, and eyewear, the TOMS brand appeals to a wide variety of consumers. From day one, TOMS main focus has been giving. This is emphasized in the company’s mission statement, which sets the tone for how business operates as a whole. For every TOMS purchase, a product or service is provided to someone else in need. This “One for One” model is what contributes to TOMS increasing popularity and sales. Most companies with a charitable emphasis are nonprofit, but TOMS founder Mycoskie has managed to create a company that helps others while also offering benefits to
Barnes and Nobles is one of the biggest bookstores that has a brick-and-mortal store concept. In the past they were know as a “big bully” that drove small book stores to close down because of their aggressive tactics to have competetetive advantage over them. Nonetheless, with the evolving circle of technology they have had a hard time in keeping up with the E-book era. In 2014 E-books increased its reader subscription by 28% compared to 23% in 2013. This number will continue increasing because 50% off American’s have access to devices that are either an e-reader or a tablet. B&N changed its business model to adjust to this new setting before it suffered a
