The girl begin to shop and are preparing to make their final purchases when the manager suddenly stops and addresses the three young ladies indencent apperence. Sammy all of sudden quits his job hoping that it would get the attention of the young ladies. Even though he knows that he will later regret his decision, Sammy follows through and goes with his first instinct. In William Faulkner’s short story “Barn Burning,” the main character, Sartoris Snopes, is a ten year old boy forced to make the transition from childhood to adulthood at a young age. Sartoris is the son to a very domineering, violent father named Abner. Abner’s way of revenge on those who do him wrong is setting their barns on fire. He burns their barns instead of their houses because that is where their profit from crops and livestock comes from. Sartoris feels pressured by his father to defend him even though he knows it is wrong. William Faulkner was born in 1897. Growing up in Mississippi inspired Faulkner to incorporate his southern roots into many of his works. Many of his works intertwined when it came to the setting and even some of the characters of his stories. William Faulkner’s short story “Barn Burning” is no different. In “Barn Burning” Faulkner brings in his native south through the setting, family dynamics, and social class.
Even though young Sarty despises his father’s (Abner) crimes, why does he keep these crimes to himself and not expose his father? Throughout the text of “Barn Burning”, Sarty seems to have repetitive feelings of grief and despair, yet he hesitates to out his father for his crimes. Sarty is hesitant to out his father for his crimes because he hopes his father will change, he fears his father will harm him physically or emotionally, and he places a priority on his family’s wellbeing before his own.

After reading the short story Barn Burning I believe it to be a story of a young boy who is pulled in different directions having to choose between family and moral obligation. The story begins in a small court setting when a young boy named Sarty is summoned to the front for questioning. When he is questioned, he feels pressured and has only two options, one to either cover up an arson incident or admit that his father is guilty. Although the boy knew his father was guilty, he remained loyal out of fear of repercussion. Throughout the story the father abuses the child physically and mentally and scolds him with mentions such as “You got to learn to stick to your own blood or you ain’t going to have any blood to stick to you”. There are several reasons to why people falsely confess to crimes. This will include different analysis from studies carried out by criminal psychologist in order to understand why certain people are prone to falsely confessing to crimes. There are different characteristics to understanding why people confess falsely confess to crimes such as; individual differences, personal and situational factors, and Ethnicity. This essay also aims to identify what leads certain individuals to confess to crimes they did not commit even when the crime can lead to long term prison sentence. Experts within this field suggest that blind eye of justice greatly adds to the reasons to which people still falsely confess to crimes whether it be the law enforcement investigator who continues to pressure a suspect or often times an overzealous prosecutor who refuses to accept that the confession does not march the facts of the case and many reasons.

The short story “A&P” written by John Updike, is about three girls who change Sammy’s life. The three girls came from the beach and are not dressed properly to enter a grocery store called A&P. Sammy, the main character, is a check out clerk, and observes every detail about the girls. Sam even gives each of the girls a name. His favorite is “Queenie.” Sammy is obviously the type of guy who doesn’t get a lot of girls. Sam has a conflict of person vs. society. Because of his dead end job, obsession with Queenie, and his noble act to save the girls from embarrassment, Sammy has a conflict between himself and society.
