David, You bring light to some very important meanings of “mitzvah”. Being of the Catholic religion, whenever I heard that someone was having a bar/bat mitzvah for their child, I immediately thought the party celebration was the most important aspect of this Jewish milestone. I never had the pleasure of attending anyone’s bar/bat mitzvah, but have seen pictures and heard of the elaborate amount of money spent on the festivities. It is interesting to learn about the definition of the word and how it connotes following the commandments, performing good deeds, and having unity with peers. I think that all the years of schooling to learn the Torah, to speak Hebrew, and then tell those present in the Synagogue what they have learned should be
The Passover in Hebrew is known as Pesach. It begins in the Sunset of Monday, April 10, 2017, and ends at the nightfall of Tuesday, April 18, 2017. The Pesach is depicted in the book of Exodus 12:23. It describes the day when God passed over Israelites. During the Passover, the Israelites usually celebrate their Liberation from the Egyptian bondage. This is when God delivered them from slavery in Egypt. The Passover is also considered to be one of the most theologically important holidays in the Jewish calendar. It normally goes for eight days but in other communities, it lasts for only one week. The Jews are prohibited to eat any bread or leavened food. They are only allowed
When the child becomes a bar or bat Mitzvah they are responsible for Jewish ritual law, tradition and ethics. They are able to participate in all Jewish community life. Traditionally the father of the Bar Mitzvah gives thanks to the god because he is no longer
Bar and bat mitzvahs are a very substantial occasion in young, Jewish lives. Mitzvahs are fundamental to the Jewish faith as it recognises the passage into adult hood. Bar mitzvah means "Son of the Commandment" while bat mitzvah means "Daughter of the Commandment." Both of these celebrations note the time that a young girl or boy enters the world of adult hood. In Jewish law, when a boy reaches 13 and a girl reaches the age of 12 they are no longer considered a child anymore but must start fulfilling commandments of the torah. In preparation for a Bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah Jewish children review Hebrew chants and prayers in classes so they can read and rehearse them before a congregation on the day of their ceremony sometimes the child celebrating
May is Jewish American Heritage Month. CBP joins the rest of our Nation to proudly celebrate the achievements and contributions of Jewish Americans in the United States and abroad. What is a hero’s cycle? The hero’s cycle is a quest pattern that all heroes (someone who embarks on a quest) follow. The hero’s cycle is found in almost all myths, legends and novels. A great example of the hero’s cycle could be seen in the novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The main character, Harry Potter, goes through three important stages of the cycle, the departure, initiation, and the return stage. Theses stages have subdivisions which not only contributes to the growth of the hero, but also lays out what a hero goes through in order to achieve his/her quest.
This isn’t inherently bad and I still give presents on Chanukah, but the impact of the overwhelming religions is undeniable. This is a problem not solved anywhere in the world. In Israel it is merely switched around, with Chanukah and Passover, overtaking Christmas and Easter. This is also seen with Religiously guided schools, like Christian or Jewish academies. This contradicts what the first amendment was created for, and at the same time, supports
¬¬¬¬¬April of 2011 was a historic month in the annals of my life. Stepping up to the bimah and reciting aliah for the Torah and donning a Tallis—prayer shawl—for the first time. After that day, my Bar Mitzvah, I had transcended into Jewish adulthood. Ever since I was little, I’ve felt extremely proud to be a participating member in Jewish communities across three states.
What made this assignment difficult for me is that I do not know any Jewish people. I was not aware there was a Jewish synagogue found in Beaumont, Texas, twenty miles from my home. Additionally, I was not aware that Houston had a museum dedicated to the Holocaust either. Furthermore, I am ashamed to admit I was not aware that Jewish
If I could only participate in one of the activities I am involved in, it would be my Jewish youth group, B.B.Y.O. Without it, I would have not been exposed to many things that have influenced who I am today. First, through B.B.Y.O. I have met some of my best friends, who I probably would not have met otherwise because of geographical barriers. It has also provided me with a better knowledge of the jewish religion and exposed me to the culture of Jewish people. B.B.Y.O brought me out of my comfort zone and taught me to always go for what I want. Lastly, through B.B.Y.O I have learned valuable leadership skills that have helped me and will continue to help me throughout my lifetime.
This redefining of the Reform Jewish family is problematic. The heart of G-d is reconciliation and transformation of His people. In order for that to happen, sin must be acknowledged. The prophet Isaiah spoke of the problem of sin in Isaiah 59:1-2, “Behold, Adonai’s hand is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear. Rather, your iniquities have made a separation between you and your G-d. Your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He does not hear.” Relationship with the G-d of Israel requires holiness. Holiness is predicated on G-d’s definition, not man’s definition. The redefining of Torah interpretation to meet with the desires of the people is problematic since G-d has not changed. Holiness is still required. Redefining holiness to suit one’s needs does not change G-d’s definition of holiness. Even more important, once man does recognize the requirement, he is unable to meet the requirement of purity before Hashem. Only Hashem can transform man to remove the separation. However, Hashem does require that man admit that he needs to have the sin removed so that his relationship with Hashem may be restored. Therein lies the problem for Reform Judaism. You must first recognize that homosexuality is sin before people can have full reconciliation with Hashem. The Reform Judaism movement has successfully brought wayward Jews back into the synagogue, but they have not cared about these people enough to speak truth to them. If the leaders are unable to see the
In various cultures, heavy importance is placed on the transition from child to adult. A young person’s coming of age and the ceremonies which may follow can embody a highly important, enlightening, and maybe even confusing period of time for the person undertaking these rites of passage. This type of coming of age ceremony holds a very high importance to the followers of Judaism as it signifies the transition of a young boy into a young man, or a young girl into a young woman, it is known as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, which means “son of commandment” or “daughter of commandment”, and thus the person undergoing the ceremony is known as the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. As is hebrew custom, the age of
I learned a lot of facts about Judaism that I had previously been ignorant to. I had no idea that we (Christians & Jews) maintained the same bible (The Old Testament) but that we interpreted certain events differently, such as Adam and Eve. “In Judaism, each and every human being is free to choose good or evil because each person stands before God in the same relationship that Adam and Eve did” (Esposito 77). I was unaware that Judaism did not believe in “original sin.” I had no knowledge of the fact that Jews did not believe that Christ was resurrected from the dead. I found it interesting how Jews have split into separate groups – Reform Jews, who believe that Judaism is a cultural inheritance and that neither the laws nor beliefs are
A bat / bar mitzvah is a religious obligation that is not taken lightly by the Jewish community(Simmons, 2014) . In many Jewish communities they require the study with a Rabbi and or a Cantor for months, sometimes even years(Simmons, 2014) . On Shabbat, the Torah ( a scroll which contains five books of Moses) is read publicly. The Torah is divided into 54 portions, following an annual cycle and one portion is read each week in the synagogue ( the meeting place where a Jewish congregation meets) (Simmons, 2014) . Not only does the young
Most people do not have enough knowledge about the Jewish community and its traditions, and rules. I want to use this Awareness Report to emphasize the most important features of Judaism everyone should know.
