The use of Pathos to create a sensation of trust in the Brainy Baby product. This trust was evoked by this well-known company that stated their product would make any baby smarter. The quote is " inspires logical thinking". If this product was truthful there would be thousands of little Einsteins running around. This product was tested and proven that it has the reverse effect Brainy Baby made babies a little bit slower at retaining things later. This video is supposed to help in "language" this plays on people's feeling that either their baby cries and just want them to talk or wishes their baby can get further in life. In the first half of the historical nonfiction novel, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Louie Zamperini endures many hardships in his life. These struggles make me feel sorry for him and the trouble he is in. As a child, he was unable to fit in, his peers considered him “a bad kid”. Louie would unfortunately steal things on the streets, and consistently get into fights with others, commonly for no reason at all. In the article, “Toddlers in Tiaras” by Skip Hollandsworth, the author’s main focus is to make the audience aware of the dangers involved in child pageantry, and how it can negatively impact the children who participate. People who enter their kids in these events don’t think to consider the consequences that result from pageant lifestyle. By incorporating strategies of ethos, pathos, and logos, he is able to make an effective point of argument to persuade the audience.

Founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, in her speech at the 1925 birth control conference, The Children’s Era, explains the downfalls in American society when it comes to raising children. Through this speech, Sanger is trying to further promote her nonprofit organization and display the benefits of birth control. She appears to show compassionate characteristics towards children, more specifically the future American children, as she adopts an urgent tone to encompass her listeners into her ultimate goal, widespread, effective birth control methods.

I personally do not agree with the idea of designer babies as you are changing the outcome of your baby and you are not accepting them as they are, you are changing their appearance the traits they would have had. You can’t use the excuse for medical reasons as cancer or heart disease develop over time and not when the baby is born. Now having a child is a big responsibility and if you are already deciding how you want your kid and what you want them to look like you might not be ready for a child. You should accept your child for who they are if you get a kid with a bad personality what's the point of being a parent if you can’t show them the right path or how to act. The child will no longer be yours but be the laboratories “experiment”.

All great minds think alike, a common cliche we have all heard at some point or another, but is this true? Well yes, some minds do think alike and, when they organize, we may call them a discourse community. A discourse community is a specific collective that compares and converses. It is a thought-provoking group that promotes common ideas and benefits its members. Any true discourse community can be identified by six necessary characteristics, as described by Swales. First, “a discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals.” Second, “a discourse community has mechanisms of intercommunication among its members.” Third, “a discourse community uses its participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback.” Fourth, “a discourse community utilizes and hence possesses one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims.” Fifth, “a discourse community has acquired some specific lexis.” And finally, “a discourse community has a threshold level of members with a suitable degree of relevant content and discoursal expertise.”

Laura Schulz’s presentation, The Surprisingly Logical Minds of Babies, explores the idea of how babies and young children are able to learn so much in such a short span of time. In Schulz’s presentation, the viewers see multiple video experiments where she introduces babies to different balls and toys that make noises. I choose to explain and break down the first experiment, that she discusses. In the first experiment Schulz has a colleague reach into a bucket with mostly blue balls and a few yellow balls. The colleague pulls out three of the balls and when she takes each ball out she squeaks them. The colleague then pulls out a yellow ball and hands it to the baby. Each culture typically accepts the social normality’s around us to decide how to care for and react to situations with the child. The main ideas can be most easily broken down to Western and non-Western cultures. Western cultures for example seem to let the child alone more often, sometimes let a child "cry it out" and sleep in a room alone to try and reinforce an independence which seems prized in American every day society. Non-Western peoples such as the Efe in Congo, on the other hand, try to enforce a communal lifestyle and in turn have the baby always being taken care of by multiple individuals, not just of family, but also friends and community members to shape a future of trusting and communal behavior. According to Porter, “A ‘discourse community’ is a group of individuals bound by a common interest who communicate through approved channels and whose discourse is regulated. A discourse community shares assumptions about what objects are appropriate for examination and discussion, what constitutes ‘evidence’ and ‘validity’ and what formal conventions are followed (38-39).” These five texts collectively constitute a community of discourse through their application of common language norms, characteristics, patterns and rhetorical strategies. All of the authors are writing about corresponding ideas and discussing their identical goals; the prevalence of gender inequality in the legal profession and the unjust consequences derived from it. Similarly, all five sources intentions are to oppose the standard viewpoint that gender inequality has diminished and provide evidence to support this claim. Their ideas of remedying gender inequality in the legal profession overlap as well as contradict one another.

The documentary Babies by Thomas Balmès is a film that takes place in four very different locations around the world. The documentary follows four babies and their families from when they are first born as they grow up and are able to walk. We watch Ponijao grow up in Namibia, Bayar grow up in Mongolia, Hattie grow up in San Francisco, and Mari grow up in Tokyo. Because the babies are from such different places, the documentary allows us to see what it is like growing up in cultures that we are currently unfamiliar with. ‘Babies’ is a documentary film which chronicles the first year of life of four babies spanning the globe. Documentarian Thomas Balmès fans out to the grasslands of Namibia, the plains of Mongolia, the high rises of Tokyo and the busy streets of San Francisco in a study of culture, societal structure, geography and tradition, along with parental love and the impact all these elements have on child rearing. In the hunting and gathering society of Namibia and pastoral Mongolia, Balmès follows Ponijao and Bayar and in postindustrial Tokyo and San Francisco we are introduced to Mari and Hattie. My Personal philosophy is the belief that children are naturally curious individuals who needs an environment that is safe, caring, and supports risk-taking. I believe that teachers should let a child’s curiosity direct them to learning something new. Children are curious because the curiosity grows from familiarity. When children are safe and comfortable in their environment will be willing to explore their surroundings, while a child who is shy and timid might stay where they are and not join the other children. Curiosity is the main fuel in their development, allowing them to explore their discovery. Their discovery leads them to their curiosity.
