After I took the test from the website, Teaching Tolerance, where I tested myself for hidden bias on race I was surprised what I got for my results. The results that I got stated that my data suggested a slight automatic preference for European Americans over African Americans. To me after I read this I had to disagree with this result because I am neutral about both races. I am not against one more than the other. What the website also told me about my results stated, “Your result is described as an Automatic preference for African Americans over European Americans, if you were faster responding when African Americans and Good are assigned to the same response key than when European Americans and Good were classified with the same key. Your score is described as an “Automatic preference for European Americans over African Americans if the opposite occurred”(www.tolerance.org). …show more content…
While I was doing the part where they asked you to categorize good and bad words with images of African Americans and European Americans I really had to think about the words and which one went either in good or bad. What made me mad as I was doing this is that every time I put an African American in the good section it was marked wrong as a bad person, which is not true in the real world. Not every African American should be categorized under bad that is considered such a disgrace. It is weird to think how quizzes like these can trick people into thinking that if the results with a quiz like this comes out bad they initially think to themselves that they are a bad person, which isn’t
discusses the results of a Implicit Association Test which measures a persons automatic association between mental representation of objects in the memory. Nearly 88 percent of the white race who took the Implicit Association Test show inherent racial bias. They have found when white people carry a implicit racial bias that they subconsciously prefer white people over black people in areas such as employment and academic. People don't even realize that they have a subconscious biases against a certain race. Which can affect how they interact with them. America still has a problem with race, The Civil War ended many years ago but the war between races still exist . Once we acknowledge the truth behind inherent racial bias we can move towards
In the film about working with African American client’s the counselor explained three important questions: who am I, am I who say I am, and am I all I ought to be? When working with African American clients it is important to also keep in mind the importance of religion/spiritual presence, looking at the collective existence, and the notion of interconnectedness. All three of these concepts will help you as a counselor to develop a relationship and connection with this client to ensure the best outcomes possible. By facilitating awareness and setting goals together is attainable while at the same time being able to show the client their accountability for what they are taking part in. They are open to feedback and when the rapport and relationship
Some people are very accepting of other and some people are not. When I took the Understanding prejudice quiz I got the result saying I had a slight automatic preference for white people. The result did not shock me very much because I was raised in a house where we were taught to treat everyone equal. I was raised with a sister who is half African American. However, I know there are still things I do or say on occasion that can be considered prejudice. It surprised me how high the percentage of Strong automatic preference to white is. I was thinking in today's culture many more people would have grown to accept everyone equally. It is amazing to me that the top 73% all have some form degree of automatic preference towards white people. I
What you should care about is what kind of person they are in the inside. They also talked about the communities that had all whites received the highest rating. Because they received the highest ratings, they got better things and became richer and richer. The communities that were not all whites received the lowest rating. They didn’t let
I do not believe that Harvard violated any part of the Constitution in adopting a holistic admissions approach. Although Harvard may have violated an ethical code, they are not in violation of the Constitution. Several court cases have set a precedent for universities using affirmative action programs in their admissions process to create a diverse class, such as Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978) and Grutter v. Bollinger (2003). In addition, there is little basis for the claim that Harvard holds Asian Americans to higher standards.
1b. I am a woman, I practice Catholicism, I am 26 years old. As for my socio economic background I come from a middle class family. Growing up in the Congo we didn’t have much money, my parents did everything in their power to provide us with everything that we need to have the best possible life. For that reason my dad got a job here in Denver twenty plus years ago and we had to start all over. It was through the help of many family friends and relatives that we were able to have all the chances in life. My parents had to go to school and learn English and work at the same time. They had sacrificed a lot in order to make sure that we had everything in order to succeed in this
In American hospitals, both African Americans and women are receiving care that is substandard to the care that offered to males, primarily white males. It was found that African American children in the emergency room have a lower likelihood to receive pain medications when they have a case of appendicitis, which is a strong recommendation for the condition’s treatment. Even when the African American children were given medications for pain relief, they were often weaker medications such as ibuprofen as opposed to stronger opioids. Women who seek medical attention for chest pain are more likely to have their symptoms attributed to anxiety or panic attacks. Because of this, women are more likely to die from heart attacks because they don’t
Grab the remote and take a seat. Put your feet up, and get comfortable. Now, turn on the television. What do you see? One day it is a police officer killing an innocent African American, and the next it is a crazy white man shooting and killing a mass of African American's. Notice a pattern? Every single news channel on television today broadcasts half of the truth. Yes, there are murders occurring. However, there is more to it than meets the eye. The media is racially bias, because they only report news stories where African American's are innocent, not where they are the culprits or killers.
Research centers for the study of racial bias have developed experimental studies to help understand how race can, for instance, influence a police officer to shoot an unarmed suspect. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) is one of the most commonly used tests for this study. IAT was developed by three scientists, Tony Greenwald (University of Washington), Mahzarin Banaji (Harvard University), and Brian Nosek (University of Virginia) (“ProjectImplicit”). Their “Project Implicit” program was designed to identify our societal biases through the association of faces (black and white) with words (good and bad). This program uses a scoring algorithm that can identify those who are faking the test with approximately 75% accuracy (Cvencek et al.).
African Americans now constitute nearly 1 million of the total 2.3 million incarcerated; that is 60% of 30% of the African American population. African Americas are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites. “Between 6.6% and 7.5% of all black males ages 25 to 39 were imprisoned in 2011, which were the highest imprisonment rates among the measured sex, race, Hispanic origin, and age groups." (Carson, E. Ann, and Sabol, William J. 2011.) Stated on Americanprogram.org “ The Sentencing Project reports that African Americans are 21 percent more likely to receive mandatory-minimum sentences than white defendants and are 20 percent more likely to be sentenced to prison.” Hispanics and African Americans make up 58% of all prisoners in 2008, even though African Americans and Hispanics make up approximately one quarter of the US population. (Henderson 2000). Slightly 15% of the inmate population is made up of 283,000 Hispanic prisoners.
In Ellis Cose last chapter in The Envy of the World: On Being a Black Man in America, he list twelve “Hard Truths.” The first truth reads: “Play the race card carefully , and at your own peril.” To play the race card means to use race to gain an advantage in a situation. At your own peril is another way of saying at your own risk. The whole phrase as a whole acknowledges the fact that being of a certain race holds an advantage. In order to gain the advantages during different situations you must use the race as a tool, but carefully. Being that you must be cautious with using your race, negative consequences may follow if the race card is used the wrong way. This is why it must be done at your own risk so there is no one to blame but yourself.
Despite numerous misconceptions, African Americans who have attended HBCUs have thrived tremendously. In fact, African American students that attend an HBCU are more likely to go on to graduate from a professional school than African American graduates from other institutional types. Brandon Busteed, an executive director who organized a survey about the matter under Gallup-Purdue University stated, “There are still noticeable challenges around completion rates and loan default rates, and this data doesn’t change that…but this data does add a whole new dimension to the conversation about the value of HBCUs. Black students are having very meaningful experiences at HBCUs, compared to black graduates from everywhere else.” (Busteed) Here we can assume what Busteed analyzed from the survey was that despite the fact that HBCUs seem to have challenges, for instance one that wasn’t mention regarding how PWIs receive a substation amount of funding as compared to HBCUs. In the face of all this the black students that do attend HBCUs are still confident and graduate quite successful. Moreover, approximately 33% of African American students receiving their PhDs
Being an African American woman in a Caucasian male dominated society, I have experienced my share of racial and sexual inequalities. Nonetheless, for the purpose of assignment only racial inequality will be discussed. As stated in last week’s assignment. For centuries, inhabitants of the earth have had an innate superiority complex, countries with greater weapons, numbers, technology and economic resources, created systems of inequality through domination of inferior-minority-groups, maintained and perpetuated through social forces.
An associate of the personnel department proposes that Frank should continue to use the Wonderlic but that the test scores should be interpreted by the racial/ethnic classification of the test taker. For example, raw scores on the Wonderlic would be converted to percentages within ethnic classification. With such a procedure, African Americans taking the test who receive the exact raw score as whites would receive a higher percentage score on the exam because of the “within-ethnic” interpretation. He argues that the procedure would enable Frank to continue using a valid and useful test while avoiding adverse impact. (Mr. Goebel would have advanced to the interview with this approach.) Take a position on this
Firstly, I went into this test a little bit skeptical. I felt that no matter how well I did it was going to show that I had an unconscious bias towards white Americans and viewed them as good over the others. The test starts out with black on one side and whites on the other. It then adds words of bad on the left side and words that are good on the right side. Then associates black with bad and white with good. I wonder how the results may differ if the test starts out with White with bad and Blacks with good.
