Auggie Pullman is starting real school for the first time. But for him, it is harder, because he has Treacher Collins Syndrome which makes it so he was born with facial deformities. Having this Auggie was embarrassed and did not want to show his face. He wore an astronaut helmet or two years in a row! He has also been bullied a lot through his life and been given the worst looks imaginable. On Auggie’s first day of school he can tell many people are looking at him and talking about him. Julian the popular guy who Auggie thought was his friend was a jerk and terrible to Auggie. Though Auggie is bullied he finds a great friend named Jack. On Halloween Auggie told everyone he was being Boba Fett but, he decided to be bleeding scream. He went
Auggie was born with Treacher Collins syndrome and a Cleft Palate. After multiple surgeries, his Cleft Palate is mostly gone and the Treacher Collins Syndrome is better than what it was. According to the book, “When I came out of my Mom’s, she said the whole
One example of Julian bullying Auggie is when he kept putting mean notes in Auggie’s locker. I know that Julian is a bully because if he wasn’t a bully he might have actually been friends with Auggie. Another example of Julian bullying Auggie is when he was calling him names like a “freak” and he also started “the plague” just to be mean to Auggie. I know that Julian is a bully because he would not have started the plague or kept calling him a freak. This proves that Julian is a bully.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to a new school with no friends and a different face? To have everyone look at you and make a repelling face? That’s what it was like for August Pullman in the 5th grade. Auggie is different that everybody else in 5th grade. Auggie was born with a facial deformity so he looks different that other people he has had 27 so far in his life. Auggie goes to a school called Beecher Prep. In my opinion Beecher Prep has had a positive effect on Auggie’s life because now he has made more friends like Summer, Jack Will, Max G, Max W, and Reid. Sometimes it is hard for auggie to fit in when people like julian step into the picture, but overall Beecher Prep has made Auggie’s life a little easier.
August Pullman is a 5th grader that has Treacher Collins syndrome. It’s a disease that causes someone’s face to be deformed. This prevents Auggie from going to school. But his family wants him to try it out. He has some good times but most of the time, he doesn’t enjoy it. In this essay, i will be talking about the times that he wasn’t enjoying it. And for these reasons, that’s why i choose for him not to go to school .
“‘The main thing I have is this thing called man-di-bu-lo-facial dys-os-tosis-which took me forever to learn how to pronounce, by the way.’” Because he has a face that not many think of as comforting, he has lived most of his life ashamed of the way he looks. As the book progresses, however, Auggie learns that looks aren’t as important as they seem. He learns this with the help of his friends and family. Auggie’s friends have helped him have a better experience at Beecher Prep by sitting with him at lunch and talking to him.
Since August was obsessed with Star Wars he thought it would be most appropriate to dress up as “Boba Fett” a character from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. The next morning when Auggie was putting on his Boba Fett costume he just decided to wear his bleeding scream costume from last year. Lisa Lorden states, “...our visually oriented society may not take the time to look beyond appearances. People tend to believe what they see; and if it can’t be seen, it simply doesn’t exist (Looks Can Be Deceiving).”
He says “ I want some good friends for a change… promise you won’t tell?” (Wonder) Auggie never trusts people to quickly because many people lie to him. Even after the Jack Will
Auggies experience of school had a more positive impact on his life, the author R.J Palacio who created the book Wonder uses Auggies facial deformation to overcome challenges such as bullying. In the novel Wonder, Auggie (August Pullman) goes to school for the first time after being homed schooled all of his life. During the new school year, he ends up making new friends such as Charlotte,Jack Will, and Summer and plenty more. In the story his friend Summer plans on going to the halloween parade with him .
Two hundred and eighteen million dollars are spent on Autism each year, but for a Syndrome called Angelman Syndrome less than five hundred thousand dollars are spent. Louie is a young thirteen year old male from davidson county, he has Angelman Syndrome, also known as AS, or “Puppet children”. AS is a rare congenital disorder characterized by mental disability and a tendency toward jerky movement, caused by the absence of certain genes that are normally present on the copy of chromosome 15, inherited from the mother. Most kids with Angelman Syndrome don’t sleep well, but Louie sleeps all on his own for a decent amount of time. His parents have to have someone that sleeps at the house so that they can help out with Louie. She watches him twenty hours a week. Even though Louie has this disorder he is still doing many things just like children who don’t have the syndrome, Louie is a great kid!
Julian's chapter is really surprising if you read the first book. It's no spoiler that in the first book, “Wonder”, Julian doesn't like Auggie too much, he portrays a bully. He put mean notes in his locker, he made a game called the pledge, so if you touch Auggie or anything he touched you would have the pledge. Julian also turned everyone against Auggie, you can tell he was a mean kid to Auggie. When Julian got his class picture he made sure that his picture to not have Auggie in it. In his chapter he says, “I hope you’re planning on burning that” to his mom and he meant it. You would not believe what he really thinks of Auggie though, you'll just have to read his chapter to find out.
In the case of diseases such as the DiGeorge syndrome, the immune system activity is not functioning properly due to the abnormal development of the thymus gland inducing a minimized production of T Cell. Whereas, in another case such as asthma, the immune system is overreacting. The other possibility of abnormality of the immune system is the impossibility for it to make a difference between invaders and the body’s cell causing the immune system to attack itself, those are the autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis.1
A genetic disorder is a mutation in an organisms DNA. It is caused by a change in the sequencing of the nucleotides that make up a specific gene. The genetic disorder can be inherited by offspring, but it may or may not show in the offspring depending on whether the genetic disorder is a dominate or recessive allele. There are many genetic disorders that humans develop and inherit. Some disorders cause improvements within the human species while others cause severe retardation of the human species. In this paper, the genetic disorder Angelman Syndrome will be discussed.
Near the end of the book Auggie feels accepted. On page 282 we find evidence of this when he says, “It was like I was one of them.” When he says “them” he is referring to the other students. Auggie could finally feel “normal” and it is necessary for August to feel this way because people have always seen Auggie as strange because of his face. At a point August even forgets he has Treacher Collins syndrome. On page 307 we find an example of this, “I wasn’t even thinking about my face. I was just smiling a big happy smile.” August felt like it didn 't matter what his face looked like. It just mattered that he was happy. For once, Auggie didn 't feel like everyone was trying to get away from him; on the contrary, he said, “It kind of felt like everyone wanted to get close to me.” (pg 308) August can finally feel like a “normal” kid.
His facial difference was his main struggle in life. An example of Auggie demonstrating the May precept from Mr.Browne was when he chose not to report the 7th graders who were using firecrackers, bullied Auggie physically and verbally, and took his hearing aids (even though the teachers found out anyway). In the same situation, Auggie wanted to run away from the 7th grade bullies, but he stayed, because he didn’t want to leave Jack behind. More than enough times, Auggie always put up with Julian’s bullying and mean notes, and he never told a teacher. He was never rude when he noticed people staring at him excessively, or looking away when they saw him. Auggie was always very good at being good to everyone he
Children need strong, resilient role models to learn from and many of these characters are just that. Although Auggie is only 10 years old, he captures the mind of the reader and you find yourself asking “Could I be that strong?” or “Would I be able to rise above the bullying?” The characters are self-reflective in age-appropriate
