To Kill a Mockingbird
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird there are many acts of courage. Some displayed their courage against evil that was strong at that time and help start the recognition of the cruel outlook on African Americans. Some displayed their courage to save themselves or another. Atticus Finch, Jem Finch, Arthur Radley, and Mrs. Dubose display courage exactly as it is defined. Atticus displayed his courage against the evil that had plagued most of the united states when he had decided to be the defense of a black man accused of the rape of a white woman. Even though he had little to no chance to win atticus also knew that the woman's father was a sick, twisted man and was determined to prove the black man's innocence and expose
Finally, Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird is another character that displays courage throughout the book. The first way that Atticus shows courage is by shooting Tim Johnson, the mad dog. Tim Johnson had rabies and was coming towards their neighborhood. Atticus, who hadn’t shot a gun in years, had been known for his shooting skills and was told that he had to shoot the dog, if he had missed he could have harmed someone, startled the dog, or put them in danger which is why this incident was so courageous of him. Secondly, Atticus took on Tom Robinson’s case which took lots of courage because he knew how the town of Maycomb would react and the tormenting him and his family would go through. Not only this but Atticus was determined to
First Atticus doesn’t back down from the challenge even when people are judging his kids and family “I guess it ain’t your fault if uncle Atticus is a n--- lover”(83) Lee puts this line in the story because it showed how people felt about American Americans during this time and what you would be classified as for treating everybody equal. Also Atticus stands up for Tom Robinson when their are rumors of a mob “A crowd of men was standing around Atticus” (145). To explain the quotes context the men at Atticus’s house are mad that he would take on supporting a black man. The evidence also provides proof on how Atticus doesn’t show fear but instead courage.
Atticus tackles a situation that many would avoid. Defending an African American man during the time of segregation. Although he is very much aware of this fact, Atticus still takes on the challenge. “Scout, you aren’t old enough to understand some things yet, but there’s been some high talk around town to the effect that I shouldn’t do much about defending this man.” (86). Atticus states this fact to scout so that he may understand that Atticus is practically defending Tom against the whole town. Although he’s outnumbered by townspeople, Atticus courageously still decides to defend Tom Robertson; even in the face of uncertain failure.
Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is represented many times. Atticus represents courage when he takes the Tom Robinson case, stands up to Bob Ewell, and when he shoots Tim Johnson. Scout represents courage when she stands up for Walter, punches cousin Francis, and when she breaks up the mob. Boo Radley represents courage when he kills Bob Ewell, saves Scout and Jem, and strokes Jem. Courage is still very important because if we don’t have courage, then we won’t take risks. If we don’t take risks, then we won’t achieve
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus describes courage as being "licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do" (112). This is a very important theme in the book because it highlights fighting losing battles and staying determined through difficult times. There are many references to fighting a losing battle such as Atticus' defense of Tom Robinson, Mayella Ewell's fight to rise above her father and her social status, Mrs. Dubose's struggle with addiction, and Dolphus Raymond's battle against racism. Tom Robinson was a black man accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a white woman.
Jim Crow racism was the belief that whites are superior to non-whites. This idea generated rules of Jim Crow racism that mainly caused segregation between whites and non-whites. The segregation of restaurants, schools, and churches were because of the idea of Jim Crow racism. It was the social norm to wear black face and yell racial slurs at non-whites. Black face was worn by a white man with the man usually mocking people of color about their race and behavior, by yelling racial slurs. Black face was usually seen on television or theater. The oppression of non-whites was horrid because they faced various consequences when they broke a Jim Crow law, such as lynching or hanging. The use of Jim Crow racism has reduced over the past eighty
Another device that assists in portraying courage is through the characterization of one of the main focused characters, which during the whole duration of the novel was flat and static, Atticus Finch. In the narrative, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus shows many daring moments, as a lawyer and father, he is a role model to not only the coloreds’ in Maycomb community but including the kids, Jem and Scout. To Scout, he speaks to her about fighting all the time because of what people say about him and he tells her a bit of advice, “… You may hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change… it’s a good one, even if it does resist learning.” (76) Since his daughter, Scout, was already hearing so many negative feedback from many people in Maycomb including the kids her age, she had got into it with a classmate of hers, Cecil Jacobs, after verbalizing how Atticus “defends
Q1“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see through it no matter what.”
There are many people in the world with a good character. Atticus Finch, in the realistic fiction book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is one of those people. In Maycomb, Alabama, Atticus was a well respected lawyer and father of two children. The book shows Atticus's good character when he defends Tom Robinson, a black man, against the charge of raping a white, teenage girl. In the time the novel took place, it was a time of racial discrimination towards the black people.
Moreover, every other character in the story can be said to have courage, especially Atticus. The book revolves around Atticus and how he has no fear to defend a black man. Atticus is a lawyer that always had justice and never accepts injustice. He defends a black man named “Tom Robinson” who is accused of rapping a white girl whose own father had infact raped. “I’m simply defending a negro his name’s Tom Robinson” “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this country in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (Lee,100). These quotes show that Atticus is not afraid and is brave enough to hold his head up in town even if he defended Tom, an inferior in their society. It also shows how well educated and mature he is that he even connects his job to his kids and he always tries to be good to be the best in his kids’ eyes. He wanted his kids to get along with other people and for them to learn courage from them like Mrs. Dubose, for example.
What does Harper Lee want us to learn about courage in his novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird”? Throughout the book, courage is demonstrated by many of the characters in different ways and in different circumstances. Atticus, a father and well-known lawyer in Maycomb, was the most courageous person in the book, and was the character that Harper Lee represented as “the heroic individual”. Atticus is courageous for taking Tom Robinson's case because in doing so he risks his families and his own safety; also, Mrs. Dubose is courageous for trying to stop her addiction to Morphine. With courage Atticus was true to his values.
In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird courage is defined as standing up for what one believes in. Throughout the part one of the book Atticus stands up for what he believes in even though he is heavily criticized. Out of every character introduced so far Atticus has shown by far the most cnjourage. Scout and Jem show courage by trying to communicate with Boo Radley even though all of the terrible rumors.
“It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare.” (Mark Twain) In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee there are not many characters that show moral courage. One particular character that shows moral courage is Atticus Finch. This character always does what he believes is right. Atticus shows courage not by being aggressive or killing, but by standing up for what he believed in a sophisticated and determined way. Atticus whose moral courage is
Courage is strength. Courage is honesty. Courage is standing one’s ground no matter what. Courage is standing up for others. In Harper Lee’s classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout and Jem Finch, along with their father Atticus, live in Maycomb County, a small, mainly racist town in Alabama during the Great Depression. The Finch family’s neighbor, Mrs. Dubose, and Atticus display acts of personal courage in the story. Specifically, Mrs. Dubose displays courage in her honesty and strength, and Atticus displays courage in his responses to racism based threats and keeping others safe.
Atticus shows true courage by defending Tom Robinson, a black man charged with the rape of a white woman. Atticus continues to fight for justice despite knowing he can’t win the case because he is
