In To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel by Harper Lee, Atticus displays many admirable qualities. He is a figure many look up to, and many respect. His emotions never get the better of him, and he is always calm and collected. He is kind and pleasant to everyone, no matter how they treat him. He loves his children a lot, and raises them to the best of his ability, even though people criticize him for raising them the way he is. Because of all the reading Atticus does, he is very knowledgeable, and although he is definitely one of the smartest people in the town, he never brags and always stays humble. Atticus has numerous admirable qualities; he is loving, amiable, and humble. One of Atticus’s best characteristics was his humble nature. Although he was a very smart and skilled person, he never bragged over anything. Atticus shooting Tim Johnson was one great example of this. Atticus, using his amazing rifle skills shoots a sick dog, and impresses his children greatly. Mr. Tate, the local sheriff, questions Jem on this. “What’s the matter with you boy, can’t you talk? …show more content…
Despite not showing much physical or verbal affection to his children throughout the book, Atticus often portrays his love in a different way. He obviously wants the best for his children and always puts them first. One example of this is when Atticus goes down to the jailhouse to confront a group of potentially dangerous men, and his children follow him there. Knowing that the situation could get ugly, Atticus immediately tries to get his children to leave and go home. One slightly different example comes soon after when Atticus demonstrates the one way he shows physical affection for his children. “As they passed under a streetlight, Atticus reached out and massaged Jem’s hair, his one gesture of affection.” (207) Despite not showing love in the way most would, ‘loving’ is certainly a word that describes Atticus
In the courtroom, Atticus qualities are the same as they are in his everyday life. He takes being a lawyer seriously, and sees it as a calling, rather than a job. He is an experienced lawyer, and uses cross examination to discover that Bob Ewell was left handed, and that Tom Robinsons left arm was unusable both crucial pieces of evidence for his case.
One central character in Atticus is Atticus Cody. Atticus is a sixty-seven year old white male with blue eyes. He always talked pleasantly with everybody and cares dearly for his family. He hopes for the best of Scott, one of the two sons he has and wishes that he stays happy. All Atticus wanted was for Scott to be happy and know he was loved by him.
Have you ever been blamed for something you didn't do? In Harper Lee’s To kill A Mockingbird, Atticus is defending a black man because he knows he's innocent and he knows if that was him he would hope he had someone take his side when they know he was innocent. Atticus should take a stand for Tom Robinson because he believes for standing up for the right thing and he also helps others in need.
Atticus Finch displayed a notably unusual parenting style throughout the book. Atticus speaks to his children in a completely open manner, not sugarcoating anything, essentially conversing with them as honestly as he would with a fellow adult. Atticus' behavior towards his kids demonstrates the respect he feels towards them. He seems to think that they are mature enough to handle topics most people don't think are suitable for children. Not only is he open and honest with Jem and Scout, he even makes compromises and promises between them and himself, whereas other parents would have a mentality consisting more of "I have the final say in the
To Kill a Mockingbird is a book with many themes, symbolism and adventures. It gives us the point of view of a little girl named Scout Finch in Maycomb, Alabama during the 1903s and shows racial prosecution of a black man named Tom Robinson. This little girl’s father decides to defend this man and despite drawbacks for his own family, Atticus Finch was wise to defend Tom Robinson for many reasons.
testing his respect, courage, and mental strength to their fullest extent. Atticus is widowed and is forced to raise his two kids, Scout and Jem, with the help of Calpurnia, the maid of the household. Atticus chooses to take the court case of Mr.Tom Robinson, a colored man, in Maycomb County. Maycomb happens to be a very prejudice town set during the Great Depression. He takes this case knowing that most of the towns people will resent him for it. This is where Atticus has to choose between what he thinks is right and what others will think of him throughout different situations in the book.
Atticus first shows his heroism when he shot the mad dog and possibly saving people on Maycomb from harm. Also he never told his kids of his shooting ability. This shows off a more humble side of Atticus. This is again demonstrated in the court case, where Atticus was being respectful to the ly while defending Tom.
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” This quote by Atticus Finch, a character in To Kill a Mockingbird highlights one of the reasons why Atticus is honorable. Atticus Finch possesses admirable qualities that can inspire the readers. Atticus has a cool-temper and he never gets angry. He always does his best to pick the right choice, no matter the circumstances. He is courageous in numerous manners as well. These are only a few of the countless, respectable characteristics that Atticus portrays in this novel.
“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen,” said by Winston Churchill. I think this quote relates to Atticus because of the trial, he has to speak up for what he believes in and he also has to sit down and listen. It also relates to what Atticus tells his kids sometimes, like the time with Scout and school. In To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus is a wise father, a clever lawyer, and a brave man.
Loyalty. Atticus Finch has all the characteristics of one who is loyal holds. In Harper Lees To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus demonstrates the heroic qualities of intelligence, consideration and bravery. In Lees To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus portrays courage, even in times of worry.
Conrad Richter, in his novel The Light in the Forest, conveys the important role culture plays during the White’s settlement of Indian lands. Cultural differences have sculpted people’s idea of the world and the people whom they share this space with. Events linked to cultural diversity enhance how stereotypes and engrained judgment shape our world and life today.
In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the character Atticus has the traits of being fair, smart, and honest. Jem and Scout wanted to shoot birds, and Atticus said that they can shoot all the blue jays they want, but that it is a sin to kill a Mockingbird. “... but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (Harper Lee, 119). This shows that Atticus is honest. Because he could have easily just said that they can shoot all the mockingbirds they want, this also shows that Atticus is a good father by telling them that if you kill a mockingbird it's a sin. Atticus is a lot older than a lot of the other kids at Scout and Jems school, but it also means he has more wisdom than other parents. “He sat in the livingroom and read.” (Harper Lee, 118).
Atticus is a great parent. He does many things that make him a great parent such as, being respectful, giving great advice, and he is very caring. To begin with, Atticus does not expect the respect of his children but earns it, this is shown many times, but the best example is when he tells Scout “We’ll go on reading as we always have.” (pg.41) he is showing he respects Scout because he believes she is smart enough to read and agrees more with Scout than her teacher. Secondly, he gives them great advice, when Scout is upset about her teacher telling her not to read, Atticus tells her that she will get along with people better if she can climb into their skin and walk around in it. He makes her understand what is happening in her life and resolves her issue. Lastly, Atticus is very caring.
Atticus was like a wise owl, he continuously strived to teach his children the way he taught himself how to deal with daily conflicts in life. When the father of the girl who was raped spit in Atticus’ face, he said that he would take getting spit in the face as many times as it saves the girl from getting beaten by her father. Another scenario, is that when men rioted at the jail the night before they moved Tom, he said although they were mad they were still good people. Atticus symbolized a hero; he always wanted to give everyone else the benefit of the doubt. He always looked for the good in everything.
A third characteristic of Atticus is his daring personality. The very thought of defending a black man’s case was socially unacceptable during the 1940s, much less encouraged for a lawyer. However, Atticus is bold enough to do what is right and take the chance. He very well knows from the start that the jury’s prejudice would outweigh the evidence in the end, but he decides to risk it. Another example of his daring character is Atticus’s parenting style. He does the best that he can as a sole parent for Jem and Scout, despite the frowns of social disapproval that his methods bring. Even Atticus’s sister, Alexandra, criticizes him because he does not use a firm hand with them. A third example of his daring personality is when he shoots the mad dog. Atticus even says, “I haven’t shot a gun in thirty years” (Lee 127) but still takes a risk in order to
