To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic, has been a since it first came out in 1960. Almost instantly, the novel won a Pulitzer prize and was adapted into a movie. Part of the book’s success is in its strong main characters, like Scout’s father, Atticus Finch. Atticus is revealed as a moral compass throughout the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee through his speech and action.
Atticus is a wise, understanding individual and a caring soul who is concerned for others’ rights. This is first seen when Scout is trying to convince her dad to let her stop going to school. Atticus tells Scout, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view." (Lee 39). This quote shows that Atticus is wise and understanding …show more content…

Atticus chooses to listen and understand what Scout was upset about instead of scolding her. Atticus’s wisdom is shown once again when Scout overhears people at school calling her father a name, so she asks Atticus about it and if it is true. When Scout asks if the derogatory racial slur they call him is true, Atticus replies, “I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody..." (144). This quote shows that Atticus cares for others and that he doesn't mind what other says because of that. Atticus cares for the rights of black people and minorities even though it is not a popular opinion in Maycomb. A last example is when Atticus finds Jem, Scout, and Dill trying to deliver Mr. Arthur Radley a note through the side window. During Atticus’s final speech at Tom Robinson’s trial, Atticus says, “Our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal.” (274). It is shown in this quote that Atticus believes that the court system is just and gives all men equal rights heedless of their race or status. Scout doesn't understand why kids at school are making fun of and are angry at her dad, so Atticus talks to her. Atticus’s determination is seen in this quote: “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win," (101). This quote shows that Atticus has determination because Atticus knows that he cannot win the case, but he is going to try to anyway because it is part of his job.
