Morality vs. Immorality Ayn Rand once said, “There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil.” In the society of today and of Ayn Rand’s novel, Atlas Shrugged, morality is the right and immorality is the wrong, but what is the evil then? The evil in both societies is the importance of money to the people and the people who step on others to climb the financial ladder. In Atlas Shrugged, one is introduced to many characters that are evil and support a corrupt government system; ; but perhaps the most obvious villain in the novel is James Taggart, president of Taggart Transcontinental Railroad.Taggart’s rival and foil character in Atlas Shrugged is Francisco d’Anconia, owner of d’Anconia Copper. The looters in Atlas Shrugged believed that everyone is responsible for everyone else and that of one person failed it was everyone's fault. At one point in the book, James Taggart said, "It's your sin if I suffer! It's your moral failure! I'm your brother, therefore I'm your responsibility, but you've failed to supply me wants, therefore you're guilty!"(839) (839) This quote shows that the looters and James looked at money like it was supposed to be handed to them without them having to work fairly to earn it. You might ask, how did James go from a man with great potential to a man who waited for everything to be handed to him? The answer is that James is a weak-minded individual and he is too afraid to think for himself. He is a prime example of a human being that doesn't use his free will to his advantage.
