leading to the modern calendar. In Astronomy, the Sumerians were the first culture to record planetary movements, names of the brightest stars and planets. Eventually, their influence would lead to interpretations by later cultures, like the horoscope.
The Sumerians first developed irrigation for their fields. This allowed the production of vegetables, barley, wheat, and the production of flax for oil and linen. The people of ancient Mesopotamia lived in mud brick houses with roofs constructed from mats of palm fronds or reeds of mud. The mud material used for the walls of their houses kept the temperature cool in the house, which helped with the heat from the scorching sun. If any damage was done to these houses, they were easily repaired;

Over spring break I have learned a lot about carbohydrates, sugars, calories, energy, and exactly what happens to our bodies on the inside when we consume unhealthy things. This lesson is classified as human science. It is classified as this because it's the study of what goes on in the human body. Basically I learned and researched this because I am trying to eat extremely healthy because when I read what soda, gatorade, cookies, juice, and chips can do to your body I got very nervous. I saw how it affects you bowel movement, your ability to break down fat, how it makes pimples, and how you lose energy. When I officially understood and read these things I had enough it took me a while to really push myself onto a healthy food diet because
Early Civilizations Table Key Geographical Features Religious Beliefs Political Structures Social and/or Cultural Characteristics Mesopotamia The key geographical features of Mesopotamia include the Euphrates and Tigris river. These rivers flooded often which made the soil very fertile (hence the name "The Fertile Crescent"). The two rivers flow into the Persian Gulf. Mesopotamia had a polytheistic religious belief system.
Within it lies the Tigris and the Euphrates river which were Mesopotamia’s main rivers. They flow south eastward towards the Persian Gulf They often flooded unpredictably once an year. After every flood, a thick layer of silt was left, just like the Nile, which made irrigation easier and a surplus of grain at harvest time. All this rich soil attracted a ton of people who then settled and called themselves Sumerians. They soon learned that there were many droughts which made farming very difficult for the Sumerians. In order to overcome this, they innovated and dug irrigation ditches which were then filled with water that was transported back to their field. Unlike in Egypt, Mesopotamia did not have any natural barriers making invasion effortless. In order to create barriers to protect their territory, the Sumerians built city walls with mud bricks. Meanwhile, building materials and other necessities were
Sumerians... an ancient civilisation that most of you have probably never heard of. They were a nation of people settled in Southern Mesopotamia which, is modern day Iraq and Kuwait. Not only are these people one of the oldest civilisations in human history, with their existence dating back to 5000 BCE, but they're influence on our lives today, 7000 years later, is incredible. The Sumer people were the first to create a written language in 3500-3000 BCE, 2000 years before the ancient Chinese. They were the first to enforce the idea of a set time for a work day, there is evidence to suggest they invented the wheel, and are even responsible for time itself. The Sumer people divided day and night into 12 hours each consisting of 60 minutes with each minute consisting of 60 seconds, a method of time that is still used to this day. Apart from these incredible advancements in early human history, the Sumer people are also recognised for being possibly the second oldest civilisation to bury their dead. These burial customs and beliefs of the Sumer people have been studied
The Sumerians invented cuneiform, the earliest known writing. They were also responsible for counting by sixties, which we use to count seconds and minutes (McEntire & Tullock, 2012, pg.24) The Akkadians were Semites, that later became Israelites. Their language dominated Mesopotamia. Archaeologists have a wealth of religious and cultural knowledge of the region through studying their language and literature (McEntire & Tullock, 2012, pg.25). Hurrians blended with the last of the Amorite population. They have many writings that were saved on clay tablets. It was through these tablets that many obscure passages in the Old Testament was able to be deciphered (cite book pg.26). Arameans or rather Amorites otherwise known as westerners were a nomadic
In the epic of Gilgamesh, Sumerians were a group of hardworking and innovative people. They strived to develop new innovations in agriculture. They controlled floods in Tigris and Euphrates rivers by using the water for irrigation. Irrigation system was by the use of tunnels and therefore silt and sand was used to control and direct water into their farms. Economic and political development of Mesopotamia was in the hand of Sumerians. They invented plows, wheels and writings. Additionally, Sumerians were great mathematicians and astronomers which helped them embark into great innovations (Beye & Charles 38). In
Back then things were different, there were different cultures such as the Maya, Aztecs, Stonehenge, etc. It is said that from the ancient cultures the Maya were more accurately developed, in other words they were better in some things such as astronomy. Besides the fact that they had their own beliefs they decided to create a calendar of their own. Till this day the Mayan calendar is well known. The article mentions that they’re calendar had complex in them. Their skills were truly high when making such calendar. Many think the Mayan calendars solely predicted the end of the world. However, there are many other things to learn about the Mayan calendars. The Mayans of Guatemala were educated people that had many different dating systems. They used glyphs and the sky to help them tell time. Although one common interest is the long count calendar, which predicted the 2012 hysteria, the Tzolkin and Haab calendar worked together to create the Calendar Round. The Mayans also used the sky to give them the Lunar Series, and this also gave them another way to tell time. Overall, the Mayan culture uses many different types of dating systems, including the Calendar Round, the Long Count Calendar, and the Lunar Series to help them tell time. These calendars gave
The Mesopotamian religion has not a large amount of information uncovered. There are both archaeological and textual data that has been found on religious beliefs of the early Sumerian civilization survive. The typical temples were constructed of mud bricks and adorned with buttresses and many small cones of different colors. On the inside there was a niche for the image of the deity right in front of an offering table. The early sanctuaries were simple in their style but the later new temples contained spacious courts, which were rooms for attendant priests and a ziggurat. There were three types of textual materials that have been discovered: prayers, descriptions of the rituals conducted by priests, and mythological literature. Prayers were always associated with specific rites to be performed by the person offering the prayers or by a priest attached to the sanctuary. The prayers would consist of invocations to the gods, requests for assistance, and expressions of gratitude for past favors or for dangers averted. There was a rule, that the worshipers did not emphasize such spiritual or moral topics as death, survival, and contact with the divine. The discovered mythological literature is difficult for present day readers to understand and the extent to which such myths reflect early religious beliefs is unknown. In its beginning, Mesopotamian religion expressed harmony between humanity and the natural powers on which it depended on survival. The Sumerians have

It has been over thirty-one years since the United States first waged the War on Drugs. This war has cost hundreds of billions of dollars to fight and has given our country many mixed results. We have seen fluctuations in the numbers over the years, which are, can be linked to different social fads and political agendas.
