Assignment 2 Facts ABC Company has assigned Luke to work on a project that involves developing land that has (been) recently purchased (by the company) to build an adult entertainment retail store. Coincidentally, the land is located on the corner of the neighborhood when Luke’s brother Owen lives. However, Luke who is very close to Owen has recently told him that he is considering selling his house; but he hasn’t made any final decisions yet, as he is wondering if the real estate market will improve in a few years. Luke identifies that the property values for the surrounding neighborhood will decrease significantly, as soon as the plans are publicly announced (with)in a month. Issue The ethical issue in this is whether Luke should maintain confidentiality or advise his brother to sell his house as soon as possible before the property prices decline …show more content…
Luke should advice Owen only if it benefits more stakeholders over harm. Luke ought to take decisions considering all the ABC’s employees and stakeholders. He has obligations of confidentiality to his company, and if he chooses to disclose information to advice his brother then he would breach it. It will also result in conveying low morale in front of other employees. Trust is a very important value that should be maintained between the employees in the company. If Luke discloses company information, then he his disrupting the trust between other employees and that may harm the stakeholders and the company. Following Utilitarianism theory, Luke will choose in interest of his company, as it benefits more stakeholders then harm and in consequence might hurt his brother and their relationship. This theory is criticized for its approach towards the minority that may harm their basic rights. Owen could come under that category, whose basic right’s might get violated as he could be harmed with sudden decrease in the property

Luke’s ethical dilemma is clear: The conflict that Luke faces is between disclosing confidential information about his company to his brother and being 100% and/or remaining loyal to his close family member. Luke is faced with the dilemma of choosing whether or not he should disclose workplace sensitive information about project plans of ABC. In conjunction with such, Luke must also decide if he should revile insider information, against company obligation policy, that the in expectation of the property value in the area is expected to go down drastically to his brother Owen.
In other words, utilitarianism stays that the best decision is the one that would benefit the majority. In this case the stakeholders are Luka, Owen, their families and the company. If Luke decides to take this approach, he would have to analyze each stakeholder’s point of view and come up with the decision that would bring the greatest good for the large number. He will have to ask himself which decision would affect the least at both parties? If by telling his brother would ruin not only the project but also potential employees? On the other hand, the company could go ahead and do the project anyway if he tells his brother not to tell anyone else.
The utilitarian approach takes all the stakeholders into consideration and prefers the “…option that does more good than harm to stakeholders”. (Ethics Video 1) In this case, Luke must analyze which decision will create the most value and benefit for the stakeholders which include some of the following: investors, employees, ABC’s reputation and partnerships, Owen, and the person buying the house from his brother.’

| The customers would be influenced because if the company are financially struggling the customers are there only hope to stay profiting. If the company was to go bust it means customers will no longer be able to shop there. The customers would be an external stakeholder, they can get information by advertisements and even check their annual report on the businesses website.
After taking careful consideration of these theories and the effects they will have on Luke as well as the stakeholders on either side of his decision. I advise that Luke remain loyal to ABC company’s confidentiality regarding the plans to construct the adult entertainment store. In doing so Luke can tell his brother to make any decision he feels comfortable with regarding his home, without disclosing any confidential information. Luke will avoid the major consequences of breaching confidential information with the help of utilitarianism and the universal ethics theory. Because of utilitarianism Luke will make sure that the majority of the stakeholders continue to benefit from his decisions, while also keeping himself within the law thanks
The utilitarian theory would approach the ethical dilemmas by a identifying the stakeholders for the situation, and the possible consequences on these stakeholders, also it requires thinking broadly for consequences and impact on the society level not only on the close circle around the dilemma (Trevino p40).
