Track and field is among one of the oldest of all sports competitions, such as running, jumping, and also throwing. Track and field started in Greece around 776 BC, and they created the 1st example of organized track and field events with the 1st Olympic Games in Olympia, Greece. As many years went by, track and field started to expand by inventing the Pentathlon which involved the long jump, javelin throw, discus throw, 100m dash, and also wrestling. Years later the Decathlon added 5 more events (400m, 1500m, hurdles, pole vault, and shot put.) This event became worldwide very quickly and now the winner of the decathlon is known as the greatest athlete of their time. Ashton would also sometimes eat pasta which is his weakness in food, he says “I couldn’t tell you why, but if noodles were the last food on Earth, I would be set.” (Tannenbaum) Also he says when he is not training he craves burgers…”Big, fatty, American burgers from a hole-in-the-wall family-owned restaurant”. Ashton Eaton’s workout is very interesting because of the different drills he did for the different events for the decathlon. For example, something he did to get better at high jump was play basketball; he would dribble around, shoot around, go into layups and then try to dunk—over and over so he could get the feel and rhythm of the high jump. Ashton Eaton used to train at least five hours a day, but now it’s more like three or four hours and the quality of the workout is way better then college. He says, “Spending less total time training but really making it count is a smart way to improve. It’s also easier on your body in the long run.” (Brown) Bryan Clay has a similar diet, but at the same time it’s different for Clay’s typical breakfast is a couple slices of bacon done extra crispy, one egg over hard, a small bowl of oatmeal with brown sugar, and a small cup of orange juice. After eating all of that he drinks a bunch of coffee. Bryan Clay eats around 5,500 calories a day that includes a big deli turkey sandwich with oil and vinegar, extra olives and ranch dressing.
