Culture is the way a person/group acts, thinks, and believes because of their background and upbringing. You are not born with culture, you learn it. A culture is the body of ideas, ways of looking at the world, values, and standards for conduct and behavior that a given people or nation hold in common. It includes the range of meanings that people assign to their own perceptions and behavior, as well as to the natural world around them. We can define the elements of that culture, and understand how they fit together as a culture, by examining that people's customs, language, religion, material artifacts, and social and political institutions.

I believe culture is the attitudes and feelings a group of people share. Culture can include practices like rituals and customs like religion. It is how you eat, drink, and speak. Culture can be either tacit or explicit. Tacit is very much like an unspoken behavior, it is something people lack words for. Explicit culture can be spoken or written. No matter what category culture falls into it truly makes us different from one another. It is everywhere shaping people all around the world every day.
In the beginning of the book Ashes of Roses, it takes place in steerage of a ship going from Ireland to America. We learn that they have been on the ship for two weeks and there getting anxious to get off and into America. We learn some of the main characters such as Rose (16), ma, da, Bridget (4), and Maureen (12). When they arrive in America, they get off at Ellis island and have to get tested for diseases. Everybody turns out fine except for Joseph, who has Trachoma. At first da suggests that he bring Joseph back to Ireland to stay with grandma Nolan. Ma doesn’t like this idea because she doesn’t like the way grandma Nolan raised like da was so da comes up with another idea for him and Joseph to go back to Ireland while the rest if the family stays in America. da talks ma into this one and they head back to Ireland.

In the beginning of the story, the readers can understand that is Ashes talking about her parents. Her mom is a practical person and always ready for anything, extra batteries for flashlights during a blackout or extra coins for laundry and her dad on the other hand, is an easygoing, carefree and willingness to help. In the story it says,“... All I can give you is dreams, Ashes. But one good dream is worth a thousand flashlight batteries.” This provides an explanation of how her dad can only give her dreams and nothing else. He called her a name that made her feel special, something her mom did not do, and her mom did not promise things she could not fulfill.
Culture is a set of ideals and values about life that are widely shared among people and that guide specific behaviors. Differences, as well as similarities, can be seen when comparing world cultures. We communicate with each other, we feed ourselves with food, and when we sleep we often dream. However, we speak different languages, eat different types of foods, and dream different ways. We call these cultural differences. What causes them is not always obvious to the ordinary person (Nancy). I feel culture is what really sets us apart from each other and what makes us unique as individuals and families.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s 1981 novella, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, is an investigation into the murder of Santiago Nasar through the lens of a Columbian community. It acts as a broader commentary on the obligations to virtue, duty and honour at the expense of meaningful relationships and rational decision-making. This essay will explore how Marquez uses flowers to represent the high standards expected of them that simultaneously result in justification for their objectification. Flowers are also used to mask and disguise the hollow and often onerous expectations to uphold flawed beliefs on virtue, religion and duty.
