Arthur Miller had an extremely successful career as a writer and playwright. Throughout his lifetime, he produced many award winning plays and novels. Some of his plays even made it to the big screen such as The Crucible. Miller was greatly influenced by his surroundings, environment, and the people that came into his life along the way which led him to writing his best works. Arthur Miller was born in 1915 in the city of Harlem, NY. His family was immigrants descended from Jewish and Polish ancestors. Miller’s passion for writing came from his mother who loved novels. government. During the 1950’s, Senator Joseph McCarthy began the repression on people he believed supported Communism. This became known as “McCarthyism” or “The Red Scare”. McCarthy was ruthless and led multiple investigations in order to expose who he believed to be Communists. In 1954, he led a televised series that ran for thirty-six days. These became known as the “McCarthy hearings”. McCarthy accused hundreds of people of Communist infiltrations. He never actually made a valid case. Still, people faced the repercussions of these accusations. Many people lost their jobs solely due to the violations McCarthy accused them of even though there was never an actual evidence. Many were blacklisted and accused and the US, government didn't have proof. The period of McCarthyism could be summarized as ruining the reputation of many based on allegations without evidence. All of this is reflected in Miller’s The Crucible. Miller himself was accused of withholding information from the government. The HCUA questioned Miller, but Miller refused to tell them anything and he did not give them what they wanted which was the name of suspected Communists. Because of this, Miller was given contempt of court. The Crucible is set in 1692 Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials. It was set during World War II. The story is about a businessman who in order to save his business, sells bad parts to the military. His daughter informs the authorities of these actions. This is another example of how Miller uses the people he knows to influence his work. Death of a Salesman was greatly influenced by Miller’s family. He based the character in the play o his own aunt, uncle, and cousins. A main character in the play, Willy Loman was based on his uncle. Miller came up with the idea for this play after talking with his uncle one day outside a theater in Boston Miller’s cousins, Manny and Happy were both used to create the character Biff. Biff was sports oriented and a charmer just like Miller’s cousins. Linda Loman is very similar to Manny’s wife through her loyalty to her husband even through all the hard times. Miller’s 1964 play, After the Fall, was believed to be written about his and Marilyn Monroe’s relationship. Miller was greatly criticized for this because people believed he was using the death of his former wife to make money on yet another successful play. Miller denied this, though and said the work was not about her, but he could of said this so the play did not receive bad
