Renaissance DBQ Essay Born out of a very dark time period in history, the Renaissance would lead to revolutionary new ways of thinking for mankind. In the Middle Ages (500 CE - 1350), the Catholic Church dominated Europe. After a long time of the church’s reign, scholars began to develop new ways of thinking that did not involve the church at all, thus, the Renaissance was born. How did this way of thinking change people’s perspectives and their understandings of the world?

The Renaissance changed man's view of the world by art, scientific advancements, and the idea of humanism. Document A shows how the Renaissance changed man’s view because it shows how art was very important. Document A shows a comparison between the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci from the Renaissance, and The mother Mary by Duccio Di Buoninsegna from the Late Middle Ages. The reason that art was crucial to the Renaissance is because from the text I noticed that it says “... feels stronger emotions in the subjects… see well-defined landscapes,natural folds in drapery, and three-dimensional figures.” The reason this is so important is because before the Renaissance, the Middle ages and Classical period artworks were flat, 2D, and had no emotion.

To begin with, the Renaissance changed man’s view of the world through art. Theodore Rabb states in Document A “The clearest evidence of the break with medieval culture comes from the visual arts.” (Doc. A)

The Renaissance was a distinct time period from the middle ages, due to many factors. Some of the factors include, the artist's’ thinking, the style of art, and architecture, and the advancement of education.

First of all, art during the Renaissance was a major improvement from Middle Ages art. Art during the Middle Ages was very dark, gloomy, and was centered on the ideas of the Roman Catholic Church. In document A it states that Bouninsegna’s painting is about Mary on the throne with baby Jesus. Middle Ages art was very two dimensional. During the Renaissance, paintings stopped focusing on the ideas of the church and more on the beauty of humans. In document A it says, “[...] see well defined landscapes, natural folds in drapery, three dimensional figures[...]” Renaissance art was very vibrant and life like with natural colors and people that were not

The transition from Middle ages to Renaissance for art changed dramatically. The Art in the Middle ages was usually 2 dimensional and had a religious subject. When the renaissance came around art changed a lot. New artistic styles would echo the broader movements and interest of the new age. In this case, its important to look at every detail to find out if the construction of pyramids and cathedrals were similar or different. On one hand, there are the ancient Egyptian pyramids, construced under the authority of the pharoahs through the use of many laboring workers. On the other, there are gothic cathedrals, built over a long period of time, employing several construction methods. Through the analysis of historical accounts and evidence, it is apparent that the similarities between the Great Pyramids and gothic cathedrals greatly endorse the use of techonological systems as fuel for societies that are constantly improving.

During the Renaissance, all that changed. Artists then included an emphasis on human beings and the environment, which shown that this is indication of changes in their culture at the time. "Renaissance individualism and realism found their greatest and most lasting representation in the visual arts" (Walker 77).

The difference between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance is most visible through art and architecture, demonstrated specifically through an emphasis on religion or classical antiquity, and humanity. During the Middle Ages, art was more religious because it had a very religious influence from the church having such great power in the community. When the Renaissance started, art became more focused on ancient Greece. The Greek influence was because scholars were broadly studying the revival of classical antiquity. The architecture was affected in the same way because in the Middle Ages the style of the buildings was being influenced by religion. The style in the Renaissance was being more influenced by ancient Greece.

“No painter can paint well without a thorough knowledge of geometry” (qtd. in Butterfield 27). The Italian Renaissance is famous for its art which includes unique style of painting and sculpting, however, the Renaissance made significant remark on the use of scientific techniques which also can be considered as the influence of classical ideas. Although, classical ideas were not advanced like in the Renaissance, it provided the foundation for the Renaissance to revive it again. The Italian Renaissance transformed the manner of viewing the arts. Before, most people in Italy were bounded by religious thoughts and beliefs. Renaissance helped people to shift their mind and behavior towards the secular ideas, instead of vague ideology like

The renaissance art is what i believed changed the world and set it up to where we are now. The art which was created in the 14th, 15th, and 16th century. Which the art was created by people having different views from everyone else, These people looked at nature a different way and they saw that they could learn from nature as they were creating there piece of art. This interest in nature led to humanistic learning and individualism. Churches and other big buildings were decorated with art.
