I chose to analyze Vincent Van Gogh Starry Night, located on page 461. This is one of my favorite paintings. In this painting there is so much going on. For example, there is the night sky which takes up most of the space in the background while on the bottom corner everything seems so peaceful within the town. The night sky indicates something else with the swirling wind, and the stars, and the moon. Van Gogh made this painting while he was hospitalized in an asylum. This painting reflects his hopes, joys, anxieties, and despair. In this art work Van gogh uses organic shapes which include the black tree, rolling hills, and the swirling wind. He uses specific shades of color like different shades of blue, yellow, black, and white. He mostly
In my research / readings of my chosen Artist, I found a lot of information about them that I will descibe individually. Based on the biography, It has been stated that Vincent “was a most well known post-impressionism Artist, for whom color was the chief symbol of expression, he was highly emotional, lacked self-confidence and struggled with his identity and with direction.” (Templeton Reid) In the late 1800’s is when Vincent basically made the decision to become an Artist, in which he wanted to provide some type of Happiness because he was able to create beauty (Templeton Reid). As you review the art chosen above by Vincent Van Gogh, you will notice the colors used were dark i.e. Greens, Oranges, Blues, with splashes of yellow to create the sun, which led me to believe that maybe this was when he was in the dark place of his life. In the Van Gogh painting, I see big trees with the nice bright sun shining over the blue water, while looking at the trees it makes me feel safe because of the openness of the surrounding space, also the brightness of the sun and the coolness of the water makes me calm and relaxed, it’s just something about being in nature that gives me a sense of peace and direction, nothing to distract or disturb me.
His choice of colors are bold and complements each other excellently in a way that ties the painting together. The color selection used for the sky gives the impression that the air is cool and breezy. If you look closely at the horizon -right side- you will notice a faint blue line in which Van Gogh uses atmospheric perspective to signify an extended horizon. Throughout this work of art Van Gogh uses an array of dark tints to create shadow effects which gives the painting realistic characteristics. I found it interesting that he strayed away from solely using the traditional variations of greens most artists uses when depicting grass and incorporated contrasting browns to imply the grass’s dryness. The general tone I took from the painting was muggy. I felt that maybe it was about to rain or maybe a storm was approaching, which would explain why the theme appears so gloomy. Then again Van Gogh could have painted the scene to portray how he may have been feeling at the moment, unhappy and remote. The way the tree reaches into the sky, the size and position of the stones or boulders it rests upon makes me wonder if his location was overlooking the sea or perhaps some other body of
Van Gogh used the seven elements of art in “starry night”. In the swirls in the sky he used lines. He used color in the sky and in the town. You can see the texture in the lush trees and spiraling stars. Compare the cypress tree with the church steeple there is space between them. There is also value from the sky with different shades of blue. He used form in the town. Van Gogh used form in the town.
Select a non-discursive artifact such as a painting, a musical composition, a building, or a piece of furniture. Do the five canons of rhetoric—invention, organization, style, memory, and delivery—apply? If they do, explain how you see them manifest in the artifact.
During Vincent’s time at the Saint-Rémy sanatorium, he painted one of his renowned landscape paintings, Starry Night in 1889. The choice of medium used was oil paint where Vincent famously displayed his impasto technique on the hemp material canvas. He wrote to his brother about his inspiration stating, “This morning I saw the country from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big” . Hence, you can infer that Starry Night was painted from the view of Vincent’s room where the background of the composition depicts the night scenery of a small and peaceful village, which juxtaposes the movements of the brightly lit sky. However, Vincent did not exactly follow what he saw from his window but painted from what he saw in his imagination, following the likes of Gauguin.
This painting is so amazing due to how Van Gogh blended the colors together. The red and yellow used in the painting look like he was trying to tell a deep story. Theres a composition of fiery colors that draw viewers in almost immediately. When looking at this picture I notice the horizon in the back, higher than the rest of the painting. Next I notice the painters, making my glance start from the top to bottom. Van Gogh did a wonderful job placing the people at a natural point of interest. What I mean by this is that he paints them right in the center where it seems like its most important. This painting is divided when it comes to the colors Van Gogh uses. In the top right there is yellow with a little bit of blue in the top left. In the
“This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big,” (Van Gogh). This quote had a dedication to his brother Theo, right before his creation of “The Starry Night”. Also, from one of the most famous paint from the 19th century. Not only that, he was also a highly influencer for the 20th century art. In present day or in the 21st century he is a big influencer and inspiration of art. This artist is Vince Van Gogh, who has created the most “post-impressionist” paints. Which mean Van Gogh had a style, and was part of painting movement, that originated in France in the 1860’s. Vince Van Gogh is known as the “Greatest Dutch Painter.”
Van Gogh is one of the most recognizable names in art, and he is a Dutch painter who took part of the Post-Impressionism and Symbolism era. The Post-Impressionism era had artists reject Impressionists’ way of seeing as they created their own personal ideals, which is probably what intrigued Van Gogh. Van Gogh’s artwork usually expressed his troubled emotions in his paintings. It’s amazing to see his distressed personality conveyed in his work. One of his brilliant paintings is a Starry Night.
Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” is one of the most famous paintings in history. In all of his paintings he uses all of the elements of art especially in his painting “Starry Night”. The most obvious element he uses is line since the whole sky is made up of lines that turn into spirals. In the text it states, “ The artist also uses line to develop shape and form. He uses short, choppy lines to circle the stars and call attention to their shape.” He uses the lines to make two new elements and to emphasis certain things in the painting. In “Starry NIght” there are many different shades of blues and yellows that make up the night sky. When this happens it uses the two elements of color and value. In “Starry Night” texture is alo a very important
Vincent Van Gogh uses the 7 elements of art in his famous painting, “Starry Night”. He uses the element line by painting swirly lines to create the sky. He also uses organic curvy lines in order to paint the tree in the picture. He uses short dash like lines to create houses and buildings in the village. For example, “Line is one of the most prominent elements in this painting.”
The date is March 30, 1853, when a child by the name Vincent Van Gogh was born. Happy were his parents after the demise of their first born son, they saw Vincent as pain reliever who will take away their incomprehensible pain and grieve for the loss of their son, so sure they were that they named him exactly as their deceased son. Vincent an artistic painter with over 2000 beautiful artworks was suffering silently for his own sanity, he thought he was a replacement child, some of his friends thought he reincarnated. This tortured him for decades and one starry night in July 29, 1890 at the age 37 he reached threshold, he took a gun and his painting brush on the other hand and he shot himself in the chest, it took him almost two days to die.
Desmond Tutu says, “Hope is being able to see there is light despite all of the darkness.”
At 6 A.M. I awoke to bright lights and loud footsteps of my parents getting ready before we headed to Florida for three weeks to see my aunt and uncle. After I had fully woken up I got myself dressed and put my things in the car.
A swirling spectrum of blues and yellows is what captivates most anyone when they see “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh. However, the way Van Gogh created this painting, along with all of his other masterpieces, is what most viewers give little thought. Van Gogh has a signature look to each of his paintings. His unique style is marked by the thick, short, layered brush strokes that make up his paintings. This type of brushwork is very much obvious in each of his pieces, “Starry Night” in particular. As noted in an article by Maria Popova, it is thought that Van Gogh suffered from various mental illnesses in his lifetime, including anxiety and depression, as well as having experienced symptoms of bipolar disorder (Popova). Each of these conditions had some type of affect on his brain; therefore, it is possible that his dramatized brush strokes were a consequence of his mental state. Though every artist has characteristic attributes to their work, the distinctive style of art that is produced by those who suffer from mental disturbances, like Van Gogh, may simply be a symptom of their disease.
Vincent Van Gogh is a well-known artist to people because of one of his paintings, The Starry Night. Van Gogh has painted many other pieces during his lifetime including one that is currently on display at the Minnesota Institute of Art, Olive Trees. This painting is part of a series of olive tree paintings consisting of a total 18 pieces of art. The one at the Minnesota Institute of Art was painted November of 1889 and is known as “Olive Trees with Yellow Sky and Sun”. Through a contextual analysis of this piece a lot can be discovered about its meaning. When this piece is compared to other artwork by Van Gogh even more fascinating details emerge about this piece of art.
