After reading “Armed & Underage” and “The Charge: Genocide” a claim that can reasonably be made is that “Armed & Underage creates a more persuasive argument about why children should not be enlisting in the military. Therefore in the next paragraphs I will talk about why “Armed & Underage creates a more persuasive argument.
First a quote from “Armed & Underage” is “Their growth has been stunted by conflict-induced famines, their psyches damaged by all the killings they have witnessed.” The quote is showing that children who should be going through a fun childhood are now scarred by mass killings of other soldiers because of the wars and conflicts going on in their respective countries. This is also showing that all young kids going into the

This is also is persuading readers to make a stand for these children and join the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers. This would make readers join the movement to stop countries from using children as soldiers to fight in their conflicts/wars. Another quote from “Armed & Underage” is “He now lives with other government soldiers in a filthy house littered with cigarette boxes and smelly clothes. Awil doesn't know exactly how old he is, but his commander says he's around 12.” The quote is showing that children are being put in different nasty environments where there are cigarettes everywhere and they have to wear the same dirty and smelly clothes each day as they cannot get new ones because they cannot pay for them and shows that children are experiencing the true colors of war. This relates back to the claim that “Armed & Underage” creates a more persuasive argument about why children should not be enlisting into the military
First of all, the children are being used for war crimes and they are underaged. When you join the military you have to be over or right at a certain age. When the military needed men they went to children and the government had enforced a statement saying “15 is considered too young to fight.”(7) Also, if children are too young to fight then they are also “considered too young to be held criminally responsible for serious violations.” (7) In the article “Armed and Underaged” by Jeffrey Gettleman, a reporter talked to a young boy , age 12, Awil. Awil told the reporter that he “enjoys the gun.”(6) Meaning that he knows nothing else about playing with his friends or anything. He has grown up all his life with a gun around. If the children
A child should not have to do or experience adult things. In the book Night by ElieWiesel … Loss of innocence is shown when Elie is fighting for his father. Three ways that lossof innocence exists in today’s world is child soldiers, children working to provide for theirfamilies, and when a child is taken away from their family. Loss of innocence has many forms, one in which is shown in the book Night by Elie Wiesel and the real life situation of child 2soldiers etc. For example, Elie fights for his father, giving his food and water to him so he could live.
Jeffrey stated that “More than 200,000 children worldwide are still used as child soldiers.” This trend is reportedly present mostly in Africa, as generals need to be able to two people for every person that they lose. Moreover, it’s easy to teach kids to something that they can’t tell is right from wrong. After being trained these newly made warriors are trained to kill while being completely stoned or high on a cocaine-gunpowder mix that is given as a drug to them. The fault does not fall upon those trained to kill, but the trainees that put them up to such an awful
War, in and of itself, is an atrocity, but it becomes even more abhorrent when children are pulled into the conflict. Unfortunately, some military groups find children useful in the war effort. The wars these children are forced to be part of often leave wounds--both psychological and physical, but these kids can be healed, at least to an extent, and rehabilitated. Children are often used in war because it is easy and efficient to use them as compared to their adult counterparts. For one, children are easy to control, coerce, and indoctrinate.
What are child soldiers? Child soldiers are people under eighteen who partake in either a regular or irregular armed group in any way. According to Warchild there are an estimated 250,000 child soldiers in the world and often as a part of their recruitment they are forced to either kill or maim a loved one so that they cannot go back home. In Ishmael Beah’s novel A Long Way Gone (Memoirs of a Boy Soldier) the author recounts his life as a child soldier fighting on the government side in Sierra Leone from age thirteen to sixteen. This paper will be attempting to answer the questions of why certain armed groups use children, why it is wrong to do so, and how people are taking a stand to stop it.
C:The use of child soldiers is reaching the level of an epidemic in Sierra Leone and besides the sheer number of children in the armed forces they are also subjugated to many inhumane and awful environments.E: The use of children in warfare was once simple and honorable with basic rules that all would follow. Drummer boys and flag bearers were positions of honor that came with extreme consequence for those who would dare to harm them. E: Now, however, children are becoming so involved that one may even say that an entire army is comprised of adolescents. In Sierra Leone, one would find that there is a extremely large child soldier population within the rebel group, RUF or the Revolutionary United Front, and the government forces. To quote Linda
At first they are children therefore naïve and scared of war. So it becomes a constant process of changing their emotions. Ishmael says “When the soldier stood in front of me, I avoided eye contact, so he straightened my head until my eyes met his. He gave me the gun. I held it in my trembling hands. He then added the magazine, and I shook even more” (109). The war leaders know this so they begin convincing them this is their war by depicting the enemy as the cause of the pain. Lieutenant says to them “‘some of you are here because they have killed your parents or families, others because this is a safe place to be … we need the help of able boys and men to fight these rebels ‘“(106). The kids now feel helpless since they are faced with the ultimatum of either leaving with no rations or fighting for the cause. All things considered they have no choice but to join this war. Now that they have agreed they had to ensure they detested enemies and felt nothing when killing. Lieutenant said “’ they have lost everything that makes them human, they do not deserve to live. That is why we must kill every single one of them…’” (108). ironically, that quote is essentially what the soldiers are doing to the kids verbalized. After a while the army breaks the children and they have lost all of their innocence and all that is left is war hardened. Beah says “I could become angry, yes, begin to visualize
Kid soldiers and genocide should not be part of war, because they bring harm to the families. According to the passage “Armed & Underage” it says, “Thousands of boys, some as young as 10, are purchased, kidnapped, or terrorized into joining the country's army.” This piece of evidence shows how kids are affected by the war and are forced to join the war. This relates to the claim because the children are separated by the
Concealed carry has been in news for a while now and is a hot topic. Concealed carry means more guns around us. Those who not paying attention might assume that open concealed carry is something new, something rare, perhaps reckless at best and dangerous at worst, but that is far from the truth. The Daily Caller newspaper states that, “concealed carry is currently legal in 44 states, and in 30 states you don’t need a license to openly carry a holstered pistol.” The norm states that one had to be licensed to hide the licensed gun. Over the years various restrictive gun laws have been created state by state, largely in an effort to suppress the ability of minorities and criminals to carry guns. The ability to lawfully carry a hidden gun became
The mere idea of a child under the age of eighteen being directly affected by war is unimaginable. However, it has happened and is still happening, and the effects these children confront in the aftermath is awful. When a country is participating in a war, it creates an environment that is psychologically more damaging to boys than girls.
Concealed carry is one law that should not be allowed. Not only for the reason that it's very
If someone comes into your school with malicious intent, would you rather have a classroom chair for protection, or a gun? Some states seemed to think so. After the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, five states gave school administrators the authority to arm their teachers.
February 14, 2018, 12:18 PM PT, 17 Teenagers lives were shortly ended in Parkland County High School due to a teenage shooter. Federal laws on the proper age to purchase a firearm are confounded and counter-intuitive. You must be 21 to purchase a handgun from a governmentally authorized merchant. Be that as it may, in case you're 18, you can purchase a similar weapon from a merchant who doesn't have a permit. This has the unreasonable impact of constraining youngsters to purchase handguns from vendors who — in light of the fact that they aren't authorized — don't need to direct personal investigations. The three driving reasons for death among young teens are unexpected damage, suicide and manslaughter. Unfortunately, firearms assume a part in each category.
Throughout the world children younger than 18 are being enlisted into the armed forces to fight while suffering through multiple abuses from their commanders. Children living in areas and countries that are at war are
Did you know, that in the United States alone, Over 200,000 children are charged and imprisoned every year as adults? Early in the 20th century, most states established juvenile courts to rehabilitate and not just punish youthful offenders. The system was designed for children to have a second chance at their lives. “A separate juvenile-justice system, which sought to rehabilitate and not just punish children, was part of a movement by progressives to create a legally defined adolescence through the passage of child-labor and compulsory education laws and the creation of parks and open spaces.”(How to reduce crime Pg 1) Although the view on juveniles committing brutal crimes is nearly inconceivable, it is not a solution to give juveniles adult consequences because the effects of the adult system on juveniles are not effective.
