Most people are familiar with Aristotle's famous rhetorical elements which consist of logos, ethos, and pathos. These elements are designed to categorize different methods of communication into logic, ethics, and emotion. They can be very helpful in public speaking situations such as speeches, and even in writing. They can also be broken down into nine different cognate strategies that fall into each of the three rhetorical elements. When utilizing these strategies, the speaker is able to set clear goals on what they would like to communicate. Conciseness is one of the strategies that consist of key highlights that give the reader a clear understanding of what will be expected. An example of this would be an email such as, “Next Saturday, we will be …show more content…
Men will wear a white or grey button up shirt with black slacks and dress shoes. Women are to dress professionally in a blazer and closed toe shoes.” Expectation is also straight to the point, and can also include deadlines and payment details. Falling under the ethos category as well, credibility is considered a cognate strategy. Credibility is important when getting professional recommendations and recognition. An example of this would be, “In regards to your consideration in promoting Sarah, I can say with all honesty that she is one of the hardest workers in her department. I have worked as her boss and mentor for a total of 5 years now and I believe that she has a substantial amount of dedication and loyalty to this company.” Falling under the pathos category, tone is a cognate strategy that evokes more emotion than the previous strategies. It is used to express a certain feeling behind something. For example, if a well respected manager left the company, I feel as though the letter would include a specific tone. 4. Pathos is the last of the three appeals. Pathos is the emotional appeal to the audience by the speaker and or writer. Speakers know that people will follow their hearts more than there mind so they try to connect with them on an emotional level. Trying to speak with passion, and emotion so people can feel the pain and understand.
Alisha’s strengths are revealed when she is working with a difficult taxpayer. She shows empathy, understanding, uses a soft voice and listens intently. She uses these skills to assure the taxpayer that she is willing to be their advocate. Additionally it shows she is comfortable in her abilities to process the information heard and apply it to whatever she is to accomplish. Alisha’s ability to listen has many times helped with the RETR program and finding additional important information needed. Her desire to know more of the processes of the programs we offer, qualifications, and how they work will help her to achieve even more in her position. Technical terms play a huge role in rhetoric. These three items include pathos, logos, and ethos. Ethos, for example, represents credibility or an ethical appeal which involves persuasion. In Aristotle’s Rhetoric, it’s one of the three types of appeals you can make to your audience (along with pathos and logos). Your ethos is your trustworthy factor. According to the author, “When you use pathos and logos well, you build your ethos. You also build ethos as you write by using tone and style that are appropriate to the situation.”
Recognizing a speaker’s intended audience is crucial to understanding the effectiveness of rhetorical appeals and the overall argument. If I am able to successfully identify the intended audience of a speaker, I will be able to more thoroughly analyze the effectiveness of the speaker’ rhetorical appeals and devices (Lunsford et al. 92,93).

In order for listeners to be persuaded they need to be able to believe in the character of that person. A speaker can be giving logical proof all they want but if the audience does not trust the speaker then they will not be able to be persuaded. Aristotle wrote that ethical proof, “is wrought when the speech is so spoked as to make the speaker credible; for we trust good men more and soon, as a rule about everything; while, about things which do not admit or precision, but only guesswork, we trust them absolutely” (Golden 68). A speaker’s integrity is judged on the basis of the apparent truthfulness of the statements one is making. The audience will also judge on the soundness of ideas in terms of their own experience and the evidence given in order to support the proposal. Lastly the speaker’s attitude toward the audience is also judged on the basis of best interest. Even though Aristotle stressed the importance of logos he stated that ethos is, “the most potent of all the means to persuasion” (Golden 73). A speaker may have an abundance of evidence, but if the audience finds the speaker to be a dishonest person they will have their doubts and it will be ten times more difficult for the speaker to persuade
Since the year 1918, the United States has developed flu vaccines, antiviral medications, and intensive care facilities, but widespread fear of another major pandemic is still common to occur. The United States have many vaccines available to prevent any disease. Although vaccination provides assurance to many people, some are still concerned about possible negative effects of vaccines. As a resault, parents in increasing numbers are choosing not to vaccinate themselves or their children, and the controversy surrounding vaccination has grown. However, the question whether vaccines should be mandatory are hotly debated. First of all, anger is believed to be a natural thought that is assumed to be sometimes unwanted or irrational, and they are believed to be emotions that everybody can experience during life time as suggested by Sanders et la., 2004 .
