Courage can be interpreted in a variety of ways. Some acts of courage include being able to say no, standing up for others, or experiencing something new. Jumping in front of a car, risking your life to protect someone you love, is undoubtedly an act of courage. In the novel Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the Universe, the main characters exhibit extreme bravery. The coming-of-age novel is set in El Paso, Texas, in 1987. It focuses on the self-discovery of two teenage boys. While having very different interests and backgrounds, they learn to love each other and all their differences. The novel touches on different elements of identity including friendship, family relationships, ethnic backgrounds, and sexuality. Aristotle and Dante display …show more content…
Dante shows his strength by standing up for his identity and not being ashamed of it. One similarity they share in their strength is how they both don't recognize how strong they truly are. The way Aristotle and Dante portray their bravery speaks to the similarities and differences between the two of them. When thinking about Ari's bravery, the first thing that likely comes to mind is his jumping in front of a car to protect Dante. While this does show extreme bravery, I don't think that this is an example of him being brave because of his physical strength, but rather him being brave to protect someone he has a lot of love for. In most cases, Aristotle's bravery stems from his confidence in his physical strength. He was never one to back down from a physical fight. Part of this was because of how he lifted weights whenever he was in distress. As the stress in his life began to increase, Ari was getting bigger and stronger. There was no reason for him to be afraid of a fight. On page 173, we see one of the first examples of Ari using physicality as a means of bravery. Ari had been home alone one night while his parents were out at a wedding. Unexpectedly, Charlie Escobedo arrives at Ari's front door.
Courage is when you believe in yourself that you can do anything. Well, In line 270, The Odyssey stated, ‘‘Odysseus was afraid of the cyclops but had the courage to keep moving and he escaped the cyclops cave (379).
Being brave requires massive strength of mind, body, and spirit. It is being prepared to face adversity. It allows people to face their greatest enemies without fear. Out of all of the characteristics that Odysseus portrays, bravery stands out above all. There are many cases in which this shows up in The Odyssey by Homer. Specific examples that represent Odysseus's bravery are the battle of Cicones, the events at the cyclops cave, and the events with the lotus eaters.
Courage is defined in this book as doing what is right. Even if it means you are on the
To hold up a “tough” facade, Aristotle keeps secret from his family his true emotions about his brother Bernardo, which ultimately affect his everyday interactions. In addition, the pressure from his parents to never speak about Bernardo in fear
Odysseus shows his bravery during the odyssey by going to battle against many different adversaries. For example, Odysseus not only asked, but demanded the restoration of his crew from Circe. Even though Odysseus ate “moly”, which protected him from Circe’s drug, he still demonstrated bravery by standing up to Circe. Another example of Odysseus’s bravery was when he went up against the Cyclops. Odysseus had never seen anything like the Cyclops before, yet he still was brave enough to go up against them. Odysseus also demonstrated strength throughout the odyssey. Odysseus was not only physically strong, but he was also mentally strong.
Bravery is one of the most important and recognizable qualities in a hero, and Odysseus was very brave. When his army was turned into animals by Circe, he risked his life climbing up a mountain to save the men. In addition, he ate a poisonous plant that Hermes, the messenger of the gods, offered to him for his protection. He accepted the offer, skeptical and afraid of what would happen if he did not take the plant. Once Odysseus got Circe to turn his crew back to humans after a year of supplicating, he leaves to the Underworld to find a way home. This is also very brave of Odysseus, because traveling to the underworld meant certain death. When he arrives, he sacrifices a lamb to a blind prophet, Tiresias, and he tells Odysseus how to get home.
When Odysseus took a chance by getting the cyclops drunk and then stabbed him, that is bravery. “Drunk, hiccuping,/ he dribbled streams of liquor” (Homer. 370). Odysseus plan was to get the cyclops drunk so he could retrieve his makeshift spear and stab the cyclops in the eye. This is an example of Odysseus being brave because there was a big change that the cyclops could’ve killed him in the process. Odysseus is Sailing past the sirens, creatures that pull you to your death with their voices.
In The Odyssey, Odysseus definitely demonstrates this characteristic just about the entire time. An example of Odysseus’ courageousness is when he and his men land on the island of the Cyclopes and become trapped in Polyphemus’ cave. Odysseus gets the courage to blind the Cyclops, who is much more powerful and stronger than he is. “I drew it from the coals and my four fellows gave me a hand, lugging it near the Kyklops as more than natural force nerved them; straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye, and I leaned on it turning it as a shipwright turns a drill in planking” (IX 412-418). Odysseus remained calm enough to think through the predicament he was in to get the courage to do this.
Not only is courage one of the most important factors of life, but it is also a virtue held by many. According to Aristotle, courage is what creates attainability for all other virtues and therefore is the first virtue (Treasurer). Courage can be both useful and important in life because it can lead to success through good leadership. In the poem The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus possesses a valiant personality. Odysseus’s bravery in a time of need sets him up to be a more victorious leader.
He is what Rome should be represented by never faltering against anything or anyone. Bravery is a part of his part he used to be a slave and a gladiator and was never defeated. He was hurt but always came out victorious against any foe. Secondly, Renius shows bravery how he handles his pupils Gaius and Marcus by fighting challenging them in fights he knows that if he is to die he will die with honor and is brave enough to make the best fighters that Rome has seen, even if that means dying for it. Thirdly, Renius is brave when he has to have his arm amputated.
According to Aristotle, the virtue of courage belongs to people who show confidence in the face of fear and also think of courage as of the right thing. Behaving courageously does not make the person unhappy. Instead, behaving courageously is a part of living a good life. On the contrast, the person that exhibits the virtue of cowardliness will see happiness in avoiding the danger, which would result in having an imperfect view of the good life. Courage is a virtue regarding fear, and, to a lesser extent, confidence. Courage, however, does not require the absence of fear. To put it simply, a courageous person displays a right amount of fear. A courageous person does not fear the most harmful things, from which the death is the greatest. This
The courageous person and the cowardly person aren't simply black and white. Fearlessness does not necessarily go hand in hand with bravery, and fear does not immediately qualify a person as cowardly. Aristotle, in Nicomachean Ethics, has many guidelines when it comes to what makes a person brave or not, and what can appear as bravery on the surface may not actually be what it seems. This very truth is evident in the Greek tragedy The Oresteia by Aeschylus, specifically in The Liberation Bearers when we examine the role of Orestes. Orestes is not brave, which benefits Aeschylus' main point of the tragedy, as he becomes a more relatable character.
Most recent stories usually emphasize the sexual aspect of the maturation process that involve, the first kiss or seeing a naked girl for the first time, or being brave enough to go buy their first condom. The theme of love still takes part in the story, but it remains as an equally powerful and sustaining force, even if it doesn’t manifest itself in male-female relationships. On the other hand, this book focuses on the love that exists between friends and a special bond that is formed between a group of children of the same age and sex. The symbol that brought these four boys closer together was the ‘body’ that they were trying to find, and one of the boys said,” I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve” (King
My time spent at Cogswell Polytechnical College has been one of a great experience thus, making me more appreciative of the financial hardships my family continues to endure in order for me to attend such a prestigious university. There is no one in my family to have made it this far academically as I am living the life of a first generation college student. Now, being the only person out of my other nine siblings to identify as a college student raises a lot of concern from the adults of the family as well as intrapersonal stress. The annual income my family lives off of could be considered at poverty level, therefore financials are allocated properly by priority with my education not being one of them. Just as society views eighteen to be the threshold of adulthood, so do my parents. Consequently, I am attending college strictly on my own and this is what makes me suitable candidate for the Dragon scholarship. Simply put, anything to financially assist in my schooling would definitely relieve the stress of wondering if Cogswell will just one day become too expensive for me to attend.
Treachery - The Ninth Circle of Hell “Into the eternal darkness, into fire and into ice”, quote from Dante’. I chose the Ninth Circle of hell, Treachery which reminded me of those love relationships and friendships that failed, they turned out bad, they were fake, fraudulent and built on lies, deceit and cheating. People that hurt other people in these type of relationships, I call them, “backstabbers”. So-called lovers, friends, and associates that you trusted but they hurt you deeply. The Ninth Circle of Hell’s punishment was to freeze the person in a cold icy lake, guarded by monster looking giants.
