In the past year, the organization Planned Parenthood has taken an enormous hit in the political sphere of the United States. Opposition of the organization claim they stand for everything that is wrong in America, by providing “unjustified” sexual education and reproductive health services to young women, and being involved in multiple fabricated scandals and accusations in past years. Challengers of Planned Parenthood believe it should be defunded due to religious, moral, and fictitious reasons. However, Planned Parenthood is one of the nations largest healthcare providers for women, men, and the youth of America. For a large portion of young women and those who cannot afford standard health care services in America, Planned Parenthood is the only option for family planning, reproductive health services, and basic health care. In the past year, Congress has placed themselves in a legislative stalemate …show more content…
Because of Congress’s lack of ability to compromise, a government shutdown was a large possibility before a budget was finally agreed upon. In this paper, I will argue that Planned Parenthood’s existence is necessary for the youth of America and that the controversy over the funding of Planned Parenthood is extremely reflective of the competing relationships between political agents, creating a starkly divided government. Planned Parenthood, one of the nation’s largest health care providers, provides sexual education, outreach, and reproductive health care to over five million women and men worldwide every year. The organization has approximately eight million activists, supporters, and donors working for women's health and safety and our fundamental reproductive rights. Contrary to the media’s constant defamation of the organization, Planned Parenthood runs nearly 400,000 Pap tests and nearly 500,000 breast exams every year, which are
Planned Parenthood has become a topic of interest for the election of 2016. This is due to many reason. This article is about David Daleiden’s exposure against planned parenthood. He went undercover for two and a half years to try to expose them for selling fetal tissue products for profit. He received three hundred hours of undercover footage and released one video per week exposing the organization. Many groups have tried to take down Planned Parenthood but have not had any success, even after spending millions. David spent one hundred and twenty thousand dollars to expose this organization for everything that he did, including salaries, research, equipment, and travel expenses. Planned Parenthood receives over five hundred million dollars
Planned Parenthood is one of the most controversial organizations in the United States. It is an organization that helps a woman in need if she wants to abort a baby for any reason. Planned Parenthood defines themselves as: “A trusted health care provider, an informed educator, a passionate advocate, and a global partner helping similar organizations around the world.” (plannedparenthood.org) Planned Parenthood is one of the most debated topics among the presidential candidates and obviously there are two major different viewpoints from the Democratic and Republican side on this organization.
Today we dare to be scientist, analyst, or philosophers as we attempt further dissect the true meanings behind a photo posted to the Planned Parenthood twitter page. Attach to the photo was the following caption that states that, “Senators Graham & Cassidy are pushing the worst #ACArepeal bill yet. We've rejected every other version of Trumpcare.” Within these few words it is revealed the cause that brought this group of concerned American citizen to the capital. Various people, men and women alike, came out to show their support with pink T-shirts powers and signs in tow as made evident by the photograph. Now women have not always had a voice within politics, it is still a very young part of the American government dating back only a few decades. With this “call to arms” the men and women of the United States can get a word in about the terrible reform of the American healthcare system being proposed.
Planned Parenthood is a government-funded, non-profit organization that provides health services to some men but mostly women. “One of five American women have used the groups services, and three out of four of its patients are considered low-income,” (Zott, 1). Planned Parenthood provides their health care at little or no cost to their patients ensuring all those in need will be helped. They provide health services such as cancer screenings, HIV, STD, and HPV testing, vaccines, and screenings, as well as well-woman exams. Planned Parenthood also offers abortion services and counseling, and also pregnancy testing and birth control. Planned Parenthood should continue to be funded by the government because women have a place to turn when dealing
As a young woman who is constantly concerned about her wellbeing, I urge you to oppose the H.R. 354: Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2017. The fight for women’s rights has always been a controversial topic dating back to the 19th century, and the services Planned Parenthood offer are very beneficial for women who want to gain essential information increase their life, labor, and learning opportunities in order to live a stronger lifestyle. According to their website, Planned Parenthood has aided 2.5 million patients to health care and if it is defunded it could affect defenseless communities and their wellbeing. Planned Parenthood should continue to be funded because it provides sex education for teenagers and adults, gives women the ability
Planned Parenthood is a controversial topic sweeping the nation of America with political and moral issues. Every day one could come across a new article on it, stubble upon a news article in their local paper or even on their local news station. Planned Parenthood directly provides reproductive health services, is involved in teach young students about sexual education, contributes to research in reproductive technology, and interacts with legal and political efforts aimed at protecting and developing reproductive rights.
Planned Parenthood is an organization that provides healthcare and education to both men and women, having over 650 health centers that provide healthcare to countless communities around the world. Shockingly, 78% of those who use Planned Parenthoods services live at or below 150% of the federal poverty line, showing how important this organization is to low-income families (Topulos, Greene, Drazen). Their mission statement is “A Reason for Being”, which is shown through their efforts to provide health care, advocate public policies, create educational programs, and endorse research. There are those who do not believe Planned Parenthood should be funded by the government, though, due to the fact that they provide abortions to women in need. Studies show that the effects of not having Planned Parenthood available are disastrous, causing low-income families to lack a healthcare provider and the number of those who are infected with STD’s and STI’s to rise. The biggest concern communities have about the government defunding Planned Parenthood is the effects that it would have on low-income families who would no longer have access to something that many people take for granted: health care. Although many believe that Planned Parenthood mostly provides abortions, in reality, only 3% of the people that seek help from them receive an abortion, while 97% receive affordable and, in many cases,
Affordable reproductive health care is hard to find for low-income women, and many people feel that without Planned Parenthood women will have no care at all. Another problem according to the article “Planned Parenthood and the Next Generation of Feminist Activists”, the younger generation Americans do not “want to be labeled. They don’t like being singularly defined by their political party, or their sexual orientation, or their views on abortion” (Laguens 188). The younger generation simply do not want to identify as “pro-choice” or
With only “three percent” of Planned Parenthood’s services being abortions, the majority of the services belong to ‘STI/STD Testing and Treatment’ with its “percent at forty-two” and “‘Contraception’ at 34%” (Lee). Over 50 million women and men in America were in need of places like Planned Parenthood for health services, many of which were without insurance at their time of need. Denying access to Planned Parenthood would cause an increase in STI/STD outbreaks, like in Indiana’s case when the Governor closed down its rural Planned Parenthood clinics and had an HIV outbreak, and the percentage of abortion, be it legal or illegal, would increase significantly. “Now, the state is scrambling to erect pop-up clinics to combat an unprecedented HIV
Planned Parenthood has been one of the biggest discussions since the early 1900’s. Many argue about whether the government should continue funding this program. For the reasons of whether it is moral to have an abortion, does abortion affect a women’s health, and what are the positive and negative impacts that result from this situation. The government should continue funding planned parenthood, because if not, women would be forced to take drastic measures, women’s rights would be taken away, and as a result could affect the child negatively throughout its life.
Millions of women across America will struggle to receive the medical attention they need if the federal government stops funding to Planned Parenthood. Every year 363 million dollars goes into the funding “pot” collectively at Planned Parenthood’s nationwide (Clark 5). This money is used predominantly by women; for six in ten women, Planned Parenthood acts as their main source of health care (Clark 4). Many individuals with low incomes depend on these clinics to maintain or help better their health. Recently, the federal government is trying to pass the Pence Amendment, which would eliminate funding to these institutions. The federal government needs to realize how important Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood has always been a controversial topic because of the many services they perform for their patients. The most controversial topic is abortion, but Planned Parenthood additionally provides substantial health care, birth control, STD prevention and treatment, etc. for patients who do not have access to or cannot afford actual health care. Due to the amount of people who receive treatment in Planned Parenthood, it should not be defunded so that the people who use it as their only option are not left without health care and the economy can benefit from the money they raise from Planned Parenthood’s services. Defunding Planned Parenthood can also lead to issues revolving around the rural areas where they are centered, as well as the economy as a whole.
Planned Parenthood is necessary. Fifty-four percent of the clinic health centers are located in areas that lack health professionals and are medically underserved (New York Times). This implies how the medical center is crucial in providing primary health care to others whom otherwise would have nowhere else for support. Planned Parenthood plays an important role in advancing scientific knowledge of useful stem cells
In this political speech by Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States, he talks about planned parenthood and how it benefits women. Remarks Made by the President at the Planned Parenthood Conference took place on April 26, 2013. Obama covers women's need for planned parenthood services, health care, and he briefly discussed the new law in North Dakota outlawing a woman's right to choose abortion “starting as early as six weeks, even if a woman is raped” (Remarks). One may pick up on Obama’s passion towards this topic through his knowledge, reasoning, and his research done behind the scenes that was presented to the reader when reading or listening to this speech.
Birth control has been a divisive issue in America for a long time, starting with the movement to legalize it in the early 1900s to the current complicated legislative landscape. This topic has been met with much opposition, with some citing potential health risks or others feeling wary of the level of government intervention, especially with the Affordable Care Act calling for birth control coverage for physician approved contraceptive methods. With healthcare expenditures rising every year, funding has become a key issue in the birth control conversation. This memo serves to explain H.R. 3134, which aims to cut federal funding to Planned Parenthood (PPFA) for one year, by giving an overview of key birth control legislation, evaluating the bill’s strengths and weaknesses, and concluding with a recommendation to adjust the proposed cancelation of funding PPFA to a reduction of three percent.
