The U.S. Congress is considering a requirement of one year of civil service by either participating in the military, or contributing to a civilian service program, a mandate that would be imposed on high school graduates prior to them entering college. Consequently, this is directed towards all high school students in the U.S. In my opinion, this requirement would be in direct conflict with all that we value as citizens of the United States of America. Moreover, I feel that this move towards mandated civil service aimed at all high school graduates would infringe on our basic freedom of choice and our right to "The American Dream", the ability to choose what we do and have the freedom to try to achieve our dreams.

However, I do not support their position on mandating participation in civil service programs and feel it is reminiscent of the draft that our country had during the Vietnam War, a war that several of my family members were a part of and that few remember as a highlight in our country's history. Consequently, my opposition to mandated civil service programs is focused on the mandated part of the program because it takes away our freedom of choice, allowing the government to basically dictate to us what we will do for at least one year of our life after we graduate high school. Required civil service is actually something that if you search the globe, you will find it in many countries that are known for their lack of respect in regards to human dignity and a lack of respect for life and freedom. For example, in North Korea, men are required to provide between 10 and 13 years of service to their country, depending on what type of specialized duties they may have. Also, in 2015, North Korea made it mandatory for all women who had graduated middle and high school to undergo mandatory military service, a service that had previously been voluntary to women (not men), according to an article entitled "North Korea …show more content…
I feel that such a move would be against the core values that we hold in this country, most notably our freedom of choice and our respect for human dignity. By taking away these simple freedoms, I feel that our country would be making a move that could be compared to a country know for having one of the worst records in the world on human rights, is a communist state, and is also a dictatorship, North Korea. Moreover, we need to hold true to our freedoms, and in order to do so we cannot implement any type of mandated civil service policy that would dictate the direction the lives of our graduating high school students take, that choice should be left up to
Many high schools around the country have made community service hours mandatory in order for the seniors to graduate. Not everyone agrees that this should be a requirement because seniors already have enough on their plate. When seniors are about to graduate, it does not matter how many tasks they have to complete as a requirement if they do not feel like doing it and they have no motivation they will not complete
Many schools require students to participate in community service, but I think this is a good idea. Many schools do not require students to volunteer in community service. I agree that students should have to volunteer to graduate. I think that students should be forced to volunteer for community service sometime in their high school career as it makes people work and shows them what work really is. It also gets people off there lazy tail.
Mandatory Public service is a topic that has been debated for years. Joanne Levy-Prewitt, an independent college admission counselor, is in favor of making Public Services a requirement for graduated students. The relationship between service and education is significant and benefit from each other.
The idea that members of a community have the duty to defend it, is as old as civilization itself (Ruschmann 10). The United States has an extensive history, starting with the original thirteen States of involuntary conscription in time of conflict. Citizen’s service is a standard principle of American military service, which places the obligation of service upon citizens to serve and to ensure that the state require those citizens to serve (Dalehite and Birskyte 1). With this obligation, young people will be imbued with a sense of “duty” and being part of the collective effort in which everyone will have and do their part for the benefit of the nation. Thereby, military service in the
The Constitution never directly permits a “draft” nor ever explicitly states allowance of an even older term, “conscription,” although it does sanction "raise and support Armies" which is an indirect acceptance of the same concept.
High school administrations care about the well being of their students. They aim to guide the students in a way that will prepare them for the future ahead of each student. Thus administrations of high school have certain requirements that students must finish before graduating. There is one requirement that is commonly debated by high school administration and students, this topic being community service. Community service should not be required in order to graduate from high school since forcing students to volunteer leads to false information on their records, forcing students to do so does not mean that they will continue doing community service after they graduate, and it does not mean the student will mature.
Many countries require young people to serve two years of military service, and as we continue to have military conflicts across the world, some people have proposed that the united states adopt a similar type of policy of mandatory conscription. I believe that a two-year period of national service should be obligatory for all 18 year olds. It’ll help strengthen the character of youth, and will help increase the collective conscience of a nation and the restraint of leaders when considering military action. As we have 18 year olds go into the military, they should get the option in whatever kind of public service that suits his or her interest. Different genders across the world are frequently given different responsibilities. For example,
As mentioned above, military officials see the draft as unnecessary. In addition to these officials, public opposition to the draft is growing. According to a survey, 80 percent of Americans opposed the draft in 2007 (Text 5, graphic). If the majority of the country opposes something that would directly affect its youth, then that something should not be reinstituted. Public opinion on the reinstitution of the draft reflects the opposition that would be present if it were reinstituted. Draft-eligible Americans would most certainly try to find a way out of military service, as draftees have done in the past. But because the public opinion on the draft has shifted dramatically since 1980, where 59 percent of Americans were in favor of the draft, the resentment associated with serving would most likely be higher (Text 5, graphic). This resentment is almost inevitable, especially with pro-draft arguments claiming the need to serve in the military in exchange for citizenship rights (Text 1, line 61). Rights granted by citizenship should not have requirements in order to make use of them; that is why one is granted these rights with U.S. citizenship and not after serving in the military. Not only are citizens’ rights at stake, but also the right to education. Bill Maxwell argues that serving in the military should be a requirement in order to attend college (Text 3, line 45). Military service as a requirement for college would definitely
With an increase in national service that would also increase in a need for civilian service. And with that rise to balance out ratio of civilian service to national service it should be every person upon graduation should be forced to choose one or the other, civilian service, or national service. So the question is not if you think civilian service should be required or not but the question of, upon graduation which would you rather choose? It’s a serious matter that I think should be addressed to the general public. Or instead of volunteering the government should bring the draft back into effect.
Making military service mandatory sound like it would be a good idea. This can give discipline, makes stronger citizens, but the reality is doing this takes away freedom and goes against the very foundations of what America is supposed to be. Mandatory military service should not be required for American citizens.
America was born on free will and the right to travel ones own path in life. Any service that is mandatory is simpily taking away from that right. Even with other countries having this service in place, since when does the United States want to be a follower, we should always keep in mind how our home came to be and the principles it was built upon.
Having mandatory national service implies that every young person between ages 18 through 25 will be required to give back to the country through some type of national service. This includes the Military, Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, and other nonprofit organizations. It does not necessarily involve preparing for combat, nor risking a life, but helping those in need, making the world a better place by taking care of the environment. Everyone should have the obligation to serve. John F. Kennedy ones said, “A young man who does not have what it takes to perform military service is not likely to have what it takes to make a living. Today’s military rejects include tomorrows hard-core unemployed.” Meaning that national service is something every citizen should be a part of. After all, it provides young adults with strength and pride of their country, as well as training in the career they are leaning towards. (Kennedy)
Joining the Military will help keep high school dropouts out of trouble. The main reasons are because of the law, violence, homeless, and no jobs. Violent crimes could be prevented because the dropouts won’t be hanging out on the streets. This in return would keep the police record rate down. And the dropouts would have a place to be instead of the streets.
Less than one percent of all Americans are enlisted in the military. An even smaller percentage of high school students are enlisted. Students are thought to be incompetent, and not mature enough to decide on enlisting in the military. However, students should be allowed to join the military. The military offers many benefits students can use to help their future. The protection of our country is not overlooked for recruits; they are awarded many personal benefits as well. Tuition assistance, job training, and many benefits that help prepare recruits for occupations while enlisted. Not only are students getting great benefits, but they are also in a small group of professional workers.
Another benefit of mandating the service of young adults is that they would be disciplined and setup for success in life as a productive citizen of the United States. Military boot camp is designed to break the recruit down to where they are not better than any other recruit, and then they train them to do their best in every task they approach. This creates unrivaled discipline and extreme excellence in every operation the United States military executes. Not only will this be useful while in military service, but also when they begin to operate in the working world. This requirement will unify the working force as a result of the mandated service. Businesses will be able to work efficiently and accurately in all that they accomplish. Again, this will improve the United States as a country. Why would the United States refuse this mandate? The only reason would be that they bring the law down to the lowest denominator of the few people who argue with the benefits. These people might say that not all people are designed to be in the military. However, the military has jobs for every make and model. Every talent is useful to the military. Making young adult serve in the military for two years would actually give them time to figure out what their future career is meant to be. Some people cannot ever be satisfied, and would object to anything! On the contrary, decisions that have the abundance of benefits as mandating service for young
