Arguments Against Brother's Defense Theory

In the book “The Scarlet Ibis”, Brother is portrayed as Selfish, Mean, and Guilty. Doodle, his brother, was born very sick, everyone thought he would die. Doodles parents gave him the name “ William Armstrong” but brother renamed him Doodle because no one will ever expect something great from a boy named Doodle. Brother wanted someone that he could play and have fun with, well when the information given to him that his brother would never be healthy enough to play with him he decides to start a plan to kill him by smothering him with a pillow. Later on in the story Doodle gets old enough to where he can talk and he tells brother to take him outside, when brother takes him outside he takes him to the barn to show

The older brother of Doodle was ashamed of Doodle ever since he was born he actually made plans to kill Doodle when he was a baby. He was rough with Doodle on purpose so Doodle wouldn’t want to go with him. He didn’t do anything for Doodle out of love he did it so he wouldn’t have a crippled brother.

This Persuasive writing is about the Scarlett ibis. Its asking us if we think doodles brother is responsible for his death or not responsible. In my opinion, the brother is not responsible for Doodle's death. Even though he feels like he should be blamed. Doodle was destined to die. Fate has a huge role in this story. Your honor, we all have our different opinions about the death of Doodle Armstrong. But I am here to tell you why I believe that Doodle’s brother was the cause of this tragic death. Brother left Doodle back in the rain when he KNEW he had problems walking, he was very cruel to Doodle, and he ALWAYS put himself before Doodle. The biggest reason Brother is guilty for Doodle's death is when he taught Brother to walk. Doodle at five years-olds could barely stand on his own two feet. "Finally one day, after many weeks of practicing, he stood alone for a few seconds" (598). Now because Doodle can walk, Brother thinks Doodle can accomplished many more things like swimming and climbing trees. Brother didn't do it to help Doodle though, he it did for himself. He was completely embarrassed by Doodle. Brother, driven by his pride, helped Doodle everyday hoping that he would learn to be a better person.

In the story, “Scarlet Ibis”, Brother was very cruel to Doodle. This is one of many reasons I believe Brother is guilty of Doodle passing away. In the story it states, “... I began to make plans to kill him…” (345). Siblings might fight and argue and make you mad but you should never want to kill them. The text also states, “... I showed him his casket telling him how we all believed he would die.” (346). If brother got mad at Doodle, he would do mean things such as this which is why I believe brother is guilty.

In James Hurst’s short story “The Scarlet Ibis”, the Brother pushed Doodle to learn how to walk, swim, run and various activities so that Doodle would not seem to be crippled. Through the Brother's characterization, conflicts and eventual resolution, Hurst suggested that one's overwhelming selfishness, pride and cruelty can result in the death of a loved brother.

At the beginning of the scarlet Ibis, the narrator, brother talks about the short life of his brother doodle. Doodle was born disabled. He had a very weak hard and could not walk. On several occasions, the narrator was mean to doodle. An example of this was when Brother showed doodle the coffin in the barn that was built for him. He subsequently forced doodle to touch it. The narrator also forcibly taught doodle how to walk because of the pride and anger he felt towards having a crippled brother.
