Argumentative Essay: Why Marching Band Is Not A Sport

Irene is a high school student involved in the marching band. Irene plays the clarinet, but for one second she was hesitant about being a part of marching band. She weighed two hundred pounds, people berating her caused the feeling of hesitation. The dark memories of people berating her physical appearance scared her into thinking that her fellow band-mates would do the same. Irene desperately wanted to get into shape, so she decided to join a sport, but knew she was not fit enough for any of the typical ball sports. She eventually realized that the only sport remaining was marching band. However, people argue that marching band is not a sport, this raises an interesting question: What is a sport? Just about everyday, Irene has to go to practice. Not to mention, most marching bands go to band camp for a week or more. Irene’s band, for example, goes out of town to Bowling Green State University in August to have day-long band rehearsals. The band members stay in dorm room on campus for the week, as well. Every member in the band must awaken at seven a.m and be ready outside the dorms at seven thirty a.m. The band has marching rehearsal from nine a.m. to eleven a.m, a break for lunch, and another marching rehearsal from six p.m. to eight thirty p.m. The band also partakes in an afternoon music rehearsal indoors in and an fun activity at about nine p.m. Consequently, they do not return to their dorm rooms until about ten p.m. In turn, most band members get eight hours of sleep, one and a half hours of music rehearsal, and four and a half hours of marching rehearsal. Many people think band camp is fun and exciting, but that is not always the case. In order for every marching band member to have productive rehearsals, participants have to go band camp. By many people, marching band members are believed to have ‘fun’ and play ‘games’ all day, but band camp is truly meant to be lengthy, sufficient, and helpful day-long
