Should Women Be Drafted
Should women be able to register for the draft through the selective service and be able to fight next to men even if there are disadvantages? The history of the draft could help womens opinions if they actually want to fight for their country and what kinds of career fields they could go into, if they can be infantry jobs or if the can only be jobs behind the front line and away from combat. A major reason for women not already being drafted is because of the physical disadvantages and they may not be able to fend for themselves again the male enemies.
Women have been involved in the draft for a lot longer than many people realize going all the way back to WWII “ The military draft was last used in 1973 during the vietnam war” since then the military has been a total voluntary (Connor). During World War II The United States thought about doing something never done before, drafting women, because the Army need thousands of more nurses (Connor). “ 280,000 nurses in The

We were stronger for it.” (Rosenberg, Philips). Gay men are now allowed to serve and be able to say they are gay and they fought for years on being able to have that right now women should be able to have that right to fight for their country if they want it. “If we want equality for women, we must realize that right come with responsibilities” (Donnelley, Speier). Women may also not want to fight for their country, but want to register for the draft so they can say they could be drafted. Many more people believe that women don’t want to fight the only reason they want to register for the draft is so they can say they can register and only for social reasons (Points,
For most of American history men, and women have rose to the occasion in times of war, and joined. Women served as nurses, and cooks, while the men fought. This idea of fighting for our country is slowly fading; the U.S. Civil War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam war, and the Korean War all used drafts. What if everyone was required to spend two years in the military? When did the idea of fighting for one’s country, one’s freedom, leave the minds of young adults in the country. A two year draft might not affect you, but your children, your grandchildren, and so forth deserve to live in a country that is great. Fighting for your country should be something everyone takes part in; we should not take our freedom for granted; the United States of America has your back, give the country
Including women in war is critically unwarranted. The female gender does not have rights, therefore, they are against being pushed into war. Women did not want to send their sons to war due to the possibility of them being affected by the war. Since the draft started at 21, women do not want their children risking their lives at such a young age.
As the US military opens combat roles to women, several politicians ask that registration for the draft be required for women, eliciting the support of some young Americans.
2. To illustrate the reason why women should be required to register for selective service, recent updates to military policy allowing women to fill roles they were previously barred from has started the process of gender equality policy in the military. Women are now able to fill roles in direct ground combat after Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta ended the ground combat rule exclusion for female service members.1 In 1998, the question of Selective Service enrollment was posed by Senator Charles Robb as a member of the Subcommittee on Readiness and Senate Armed Services Committee to the General Accounting Office (GAO).2 The response by the GAO was that women should not have to register due to that fact women were restricted from direct ground combat roles. With this restriction now removed, women should
Women should be required to sign up for the draft. The main reason why we weren't required to sign up is that we were deemed the caretakers and needed to stay home and take care of the kids. The issue with this is because there are families where there is only one dad or two dads where all/both dads are required to sign up and -worst case scenario- then the kids would be left alone. There are also women who are twice as qualified to be in the army as some men and just because you're a man it doesn't mean you're fit to be in the
Forms of conscription have existed since the Civil War but was not run by the Selective Service Agency until the twentieth century during the Vietnam and World War II. Much like every aspect of American society, the draft was voluminous with inequalities and injustices. Women, for one, were and still are not required to required to register with the Selective Service to be drafted despite having access to all combat roles and demonstrating to our nation that they, like men, can perform in these roles. Women have every right to fight for equality and have access to all of the jobs men do but with power comes responsibility and it should be of no surprise that many believe that every American who is physically qualified should register for the draft, including women.
It is not fair that all men are required to register at age eighteen. The draft is gender biased All male citizens between ages 18 and 25 must register. An autonomous and gender-neutral draft will help increase insight and expectations of what women can do in the military and promote equality. 27 million men in the military pool and 2.2 million were drafted in the Vietnam War.
The draft began in 1940, when President Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act, requiring all men eighteen and older to sign up for the draft in case we ever have a lack of troops to defend America’s freedom, or another world war. In Rostker v. Goldberg in 1981, the Supreme Court decided that omitting women from the requirement to sign up for the draft was not, in fact, unconstitutional (Women and the Draft, sss.gov). However, as of today, there has been much speculation as to whether or not the gender restriction will be lifted.
Women in the Draft In the year of 1917, President Woodrow Wilson founded the United States Selective Service System. The federal government adopted the system to help build an army for America to enter World War I. All men between the ages of 18 and 25 are required by law to register for the draft within the first 30 days of their 18th birthday otherwise they will be penalized. Sociology expert, Geva, explains that although men were required to register for the draft there were some expectations: “Men with economic dependents, including a wife and or/children, would be deferred from the draft.
Females should in fact be obligated to register with the Selective Service. Not only are more men stepping up and caring for their families, but women are fighting for their rights to be equal to men, and also are equipped to live the military lifestyle. Both sexes being required to sign up for the draft seems like a perfect opportunity for men and women to become equals.
Another thing that should prevent women to be in the draft is emotion. Women are complex beings with many chemical emotions causing them to react differently than men. Women’s brains perceive things in a more maternal way there for they consider circumstances differently. If a situation was complicated and needed an immediate reaction a woman might not be the right person to make an instant and thought out decision. She might reflect on it in a way that didn’t conjure what the troop needed at the moment. Women that are forced to be in war can easily get overwhelmed. Men can come through due to instinct after hundreds of years of being the ones who take care of the physical and difficult tasks at hand but women might not be as likely to react logically and can be easily inundated by the stress. Having maternal instinct rather than survival technique can be a vast disadvantage in combat causing emotion to be a handicap.
There is no active draft set in place in the United States. A group called the Selective Service System administers the draft of the United States. The United States initiated the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, which made it mandatory for all men, ages 21 through 25 to register for the SSS. The question as to why it is mandatory for men to register for the draft has arisen over the years, and the answer is basically historical. However, times have changed and we live in a world where both men and women are able to serve in the United States military. The acceptance of woman into the U.S military began in the late 20th century, where it was proved that women can serve as effective combat troops. Recently, in today’s news the topic of women registering for the SSS has been brought up. Although I agree with equal
The Equal Rights Amendment would turn these military issues into political ones, and women would begin to
The topic of women in combat is an ongoing debate that is currently being argued in many places, commonly in the United States. Women in combat next to men and a free women combat are two different perspectives in which women in combat are defined by their gender. Women in combat will provide help to those men who are to attend a combat. A free-women combat, on the other hand, prevents women from dying during combat due to not being allowed in combat. Since Women aren’t able to be included in any job in the military and have a right to be equally treated like men in combat, it’ll be unfair to more people. Women should be given the same right as men out in battlefields because “women serving in the armed forces has not wavered as warfare has changed, a clear sign that the necessity of women serving in combat is recognized.” In addition, “several other countries outside the U.S. already have women serving on the front lines.” Lastly, “Combat is nothing new to our women in the military. Several women have already given their lives serving in combat.” Women have, over the years, worked hard to get awarded the choice towards their career. Although it prevents more deaths, it’s also a sexist matter. Any job in the military should be a choice for women, it’s their career after all and they can make their own decisions.
Ninety percent of all military occupations in the military include all genders, but the top ten percent of roles are excluded to women. Women have already felt the misogyny with unequal pay and unfair treatment by men, now women have to face the discrimination for fighting for our country. Women should be able to serve in the front lines because it makes the military stronger as a whole with more diversity, women in other countries fight on the front lines and women have made significant contributions in the military so far.
