Thesis: There has been research performed and studies conducted to proclaim that the use of social media can increase our risk for depression. “To be nobody but yourself, in a world which is doing it’s best, night and day to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human can fight, and never stop fighting.” -E.E. Cummings Have you ever noticed that once a person mentions that they’re depressed in a conversation, it’s usually followed by an uncomfortable silence? Is depression really such a bad thing to talk about? Often people will say, “Oh, it’ll be fine,” or, “You have no reason to be depressed, just smile.” I’m sure I can speak for a lot of people when I say that those responses are probably the worst things that you could say. Eventually, when people ask how you’re doing, “I’m fine,” rolls off of your tongue involuntarily. And you often find yourself believing your own lies. If you google ‘definition of depression’, the following results are: Depression- feelings of severe despondency and dejection. If you ask the person sitting next to you what depression is, their answer will probably differ from yours. Some general symptoms of depression are lack of energy, change in sleep or appetite, loss of interest in activities, need for excessive reassurance, and social isolation. It can be the littlest of things that start the downward spiral of depression: cancelling plans, because you don’t have the motivation to get out of bed, needing to be reminded constantly because you’re afraid of failing. There are various amounts of things that can cause depression. Peer pressure and academic expectations are two examples. I'm sure we've all been in a situation where people were pressuring us to do something we didn't want to do. We're all seniors; I'm sure we're not perfect angels. Academic expectations are one of the most stressful things to deal with in high school, in my opinion. You have all this pressure to maintain straight A's, not fail any tests, and it adds an extreme amount of weight onto your shoulders, which is usually followed by a tirade from your parents. For me personally, the first thing that I can remember triggering my depression was my parents’ divorce. It didn’t
