When trying to define human trafficking it gets hard because is it slavery or is it some kind of other servitude? The United Nations defined trafficking as it “Involves the movement of people through violence, deception or coercion for the purpose of forced labor, servitude or slavery-like practices.”# This means that the traffickers use violence to coerce the victims to do anything they want. Including controlling all aspects of their lives from where they go, who they talk to, and essentially controlling their freedoms. This new breed of Human Trafficker is “global sophistication, complexity and control of how women and children are trafficked from/to/in all parts of the globe.”#

Back in the 1600’s slavery was brought to the United States to help aid in the production of crops. We have come a long ways since then through our government system to help provide a more riotous and free system, the land of the free. Slavery ended and racism has declined but today there still exists a different type of slavery and this is known as human trafficking. Many call sex or human trafficking the modern day type of slavery because people are forced to work for another person mostly by selling their body. Human Trafficking and Slavery universally happens in the world when individuals are placed or maintained in and exploitive situation for economic gain. Women, men and children are trafficked for a range of different purposes; forced and exploitative labour in factories, farms and private households, sexual exploitation, and forced marriage. Trafficking can happen to all people if the circumstances are right.

Human trafficking is the modernized version of slavery that involves force, fraud, and/or a type of labor in a sexual act. Human trafficking is a threat to all nations and promotes breakdown of families and can support organized crime. Trafficking can occur everywhere. Human trafficking and human smuggling are related to one another, but different crimes. The difference between smuggling and trafficking is that smuggling is the illegal movement of someone across a border while trafficking is the illegal exploitation of a person.

It is a fast growing industry that affects millions. No gender, age, or status is spared from the cruelty that is trafficking. Human trafficking can take many forms, as well as many victims. One form of trafficking is slavery. Slavery is having a worker who is unpaid and who works by force using coercion, fraud or threat of bodily harm. “According to the United Nations, there are between 27 and 30 million modern-day slaves in the world (Jesionka, “Human Trafficking: The Myths and the Realities”).” “By 1860, the nation’s black population had jumped from 400,000 to 4.4 million, of which 3.9 million were slaves.(Henry Louis Gates).” That means there are nearly ten times more slaves today than there were in the late 1800’s.

Many forms of modern-day slavery still exist. The most popular form is human trafficking and it has become one of the most profitable businesses in the world. Overall human trafficking is a problem worldwide, and there are “millions of men, woman, and children around who are victims of it” (Piranty, Human).They are bought and sold as commodities into prostitution and forced labor. Many victims are sometimes tricked and lured by false promises or physically forced into this trade. Human trafficking that ends with teens in sexual slavery is on the rise in South Florida, according to Sun Sentinel, “every family-regardless of income, education, or location-could become a victim” (Sun Sentinel). Human trafficking is a growing epidemic destroying communities all over the state of Florida by depriving an individual of his or her natural right to freedom of will and choice, expanding gang activity, and robbing the innocence of the world’s youth, but in turn we could put an end to it.

Many people in today’s society do not realize how big of a problem human trafficking is. Everyday people are oblivious to the fact that at any moment they could become a victim of human trafficking. What are the punishments of being a human trafficker? The United States of America has government laws in place, but they rarely work. The victims are often treated how slaves used to be treat. That is why human trafficking is often called modern day slavery. Our country also has education programs and prevention protocols in place to help citizens realize everyone is in danger. Human trafficking is a world-wide problem, even in America.

Human trafficking has received increasing global attention over the past decade. Trafficking of women and girls for forced sex work and, to a lesser extent, domestic servitude, were the sole focus of advocacy and assistance. There is recognition in today’s society that women, children, and men are trafficked into many different forms of labour, and for sexual exploitation. In her article, “Understanding and Addressing Violence Against Women”, Cathy Zimmerman and Heidi Stockl focus on the commonality of human trafficking and how evident it is in everyday life. They bring in the health effects and possible solutions to human trafficking to help validate their opinion and argument. In the solutions they offer, Zimmerman and Stockl shine a light on policy-makers/decision-makers, health-care providers, and researchers/funders and what each of these groups of people can do to help combat the issue of human trafficking. In a quote from their article, Stockl and Zimmerman say: “Health care providers and organizations involved with trafficked persons should increase their capacity to identify and refer people in trafficking situations and provide sensitive and safe services to people post-trafficking”. This quote shows how Zimmerman and Stockl believe human trafficking should be combated by caring and talking to those affected by the issue but how they also believe awareness should be made about human trafficking so as to allow people surrounding the issue to identify and help victims of this issue. Zimmerman and Stockl’s view on the ways human trafficking should be combatted relate to those of Soroptimist due to the fact that the two groups of people are focused mainly on helping women and girls who have been trafficked and trying to get them to a better life after getting out of the trafficking situation. Both groups focus on helping men as well, providing options to help them such as raising money and awareness, and getting educated on being able to identify victims of human trafficking.

There are many jobs in the world; maintenance jobs, industry jobs, in addition to service jobs. Not everyone enjoys their job, but for prostitutes along with sex slaves, they have no control over their job choice. Human trafficking is the New World’s version of slavery, with human trafficking being in the top three of illegal businesses in the United States, making 31.6 billion dollars in 2016. The United Nations says that over 2.4 million people across the globe are victims of human trafficking, 80% of them being sex slaves. Even in today’s general public, there are still sex slaves on the streets, moreover, no one seems to try to aid victims of human trafficking. People choose to turn their heads away from sex slavery on account of sex being accepted as a normal practice in society.

Human trafficking is modern-day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act (Homeland).

Slavery is a horrible thing, we’ve learned about the pain, the sorrow, and the discrimination that slaves experienced. It might seem like a thing of the past but it’s still happening to this day. It is known as Human Trafficking. Slavery doesn’t just happens to adults, it’s also happens to kids. It might seem like something impossible to imagine, but there are kids being sold, beaten, and used for personal gain. Nobody wants to imagine a child suffering from abuse and discrimination. It’s not right that people should suffer at the ends of someone else. People should be free so they can experience and enjoy life to the fullest. A man loses his job and starts doing anything he can to be a provider for his family. He is desperate, and his neighbor offers him a construction job a couple cities away. He is worried about the well-being of his family so he takes the job. The next morning, the man and his neighbor load up in a van with other men of similar circumstance and drive for hours. They arrive to a gated, dirty work environment without any personal protection or specific directions. Fast forward…six months later, the man is still working on the site, long hours, and has not been paid and has no way of contacting his family.
