Gun Control
With all these mass shootings happening recently in our country it has brought up a huge discussion on if guns should be legal or not. My view on guns is if you have a clean history and no mental illness issues I have nothing wrong with someone owning a gun. Therefore I am for guns for self defense and hunting. I think having a gun is a huge responsibility and you shouldn’t be able to have any history of being a criminal or have a history of having a mental illness even to the slightest degree. These mass shooters I 100% think that they had a mental illness and sent them over the edge because I don’t know how anyone in the right mind could do a crime as big as killing hundreds of innocent people for no reason. My view on the 2nd amendment is that it should be a thing and I’m for it. I do think that it should be harder to buy guns and something needs to change but after it’s all said and done you should be able to own guns. I think having an automatic gun should be extremely illegal and if you get caught having a automatic gun you should serve a pretty big sentence for your crime. Our own soldiers in the military don’t even walk around with automatic guns so absolutely nobody should be able to even own them in our country as a citizen. In the two cases we researched and talked about I think the two citizens that won the cases ( McDonald and Heller) should have won the cases. I think they should’ve won because they both had great reasons to why owning a gun is necessary. Heller is a cop and I would definitely want a gun at home to protect myself because what if someone you arrested 4 years ago was after you and tried attacking your home? I think he had a good view and good points on why he should own a gun. McDonald had criminals breaking into his garage and a lot of violence happening in his neighborhood and no citizen deserves to be at risk and McDonald has the right to defend himself in such a hostile environment. If I was the Supreme Court and had to explain the 2nd amendment or the right to bear arms on these two cases I would simply say every citizen has the right to protect themselves and if you have the clean history to own a gun than nothing is wrong with that. Crime happens
The Second Amendment of the US Constitution protects individual gun ownership. The Second Amendment of the US Constitution reads, "A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Gun ownership is an American tradition older than the country itself and is protected by the Second Amendment; more gun control laws would infringe upon the right to bear arms. Justice Antonin Scalia, LLB, in the June 26, 2008 District of Columbia et al. v. Heller US Supreme Court majority opinion syllabus stated, "The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home." The McDonald v. City of Chicago (2010) ruling also stated that the Second Amendment is an individual right. Lawrence Hunter, Chairman of Revolution PAC, stated, "The Founders understood that the right to own and bear laws is as fundamental and as essential to maintaining liberty as are the rights of free speech, a free press, freedom of religion and the other protections against government encroachments on liberty delineated in the Bill of Rights."
Roughly 16,459 murders were committed in the United States during 2016. Of these, about 11,961 or 73% were committed with firearms because people have been killed with gun shot, example the las vegas shooting. A Pew Foundation report found that 79% of male gun owners and 80% of female gun owners said owning a gun made them feel safer, and 64% of people living in a home in which someone else owns a gun felt safer. The Centers for Disease Control listed firearms as the #12 cause of all deaths between 1999 and 2013, representing 1.3% of total deaths. They were also the #1 method of death by homicide (66.6% of all homicides) and by suicide (52.2% of all suicides).
Our second amendment clearly states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed,” (amendment). But, what does that mean today? How does one start to form a way to relegated gun control when it clearly states in the Bill of Rights we have the right to bear arms? Does, the idea of every citizen of America have the right to bear arms without any control? The point of gun control is to protect the next generation of American citizens from ever having to worry about their safety. When the Bill of Rights was written down, the Founding Fathers were trying to create a better society where there was no King and people had greater freedom. For my research project I am going to focus on what people know about gun control and their point of views on how to better regulate gun control.
Sandy Hook Elementary. Aurora, Colorado. San Bernardino, California. Las Vegas, Nevada. Orlando, Florida. (Words with Negative Connotation) These are just some of the biggest mass shootings that have swept America in the past few years. Hundreds of lives are lost each year to gun related violence in the United States alone. Gun control has been a topic in our country since our founding fathers adopted the second amendment to the US constitution. Although recently controversy has sparked to an all-new extent in America due to the recent spike in mass shootings and gun related homicides. So many families and loves ones are affected each year in the United States because of gun related violence and other mass killing events, because of these events gun control laws need to be revamped and strengthened in American in order to protect the citizens.
Some believe the Second Amendment is not an unlimited right to own guns. According to Gun Control Laws, “Gun control laws seek to limit the extent to which citizens can keep and own firearms, and often place limits on who can own firearms.” This would be directly affecting the Second Amendment and the right to own a gun and keep firearms. Another example of an idea in trying to restrict gun control laws says, “Proponents of these laws argue that gun control laws are necessary to reduce gun-related crime and protect the police and the public from the dangers inherent in the proliferation of guns” (Gun Control Laws). This act of trying to restrict gun ownership would be considered stricter gun control legislation and a direct attack on the 2nd Amendment. This is a complicated issue and both sides are firm on their perspective and gun owners will not give in and have the second amendment taken away from them. A Broader Perspective of Gun Control states, “the polarization of Americans regarding the control of firearms has evolved into a complex social and political conundrum that evokes emotional reaction among individuals and groups.” During the election season, this topic is always brought up and constantly debated. A major court case that went to the supreme court was Columbia v. Heller. This court examined, “whether D.C. firearms laws violate Second Amendment rights of individuals who are not
As Americans, we are very used to the scene after a new mass shooting happens: outrage, fear, and families suffering the death of their beloved ones. Politicians start debating on gun policy, again, arriving at no solution. This has been America’s reality for the past decades. The problem in which lobbyists and a dominant minority stop any attempt to find a solution. Dan Gross, as president of the Brady Campaign, is seeking to promote sensible gun control in the United States. Mr. Gross advocates for gun control and for laws that put a stop to the gun violence problem (Ted Talk). Another article by Tom McCarthy in The Guardian gives some data and ideas about what gun control would look like. McCarthy’s article gives us a context in which
Recently, on October 1st at a concert in Las Vegas, a man unleashed a halo of gunfire from a hotel room, injuring 500 people and killing 59. Making it the deadliest mass shooting in American History. This sparked controversy among many that gun control was more urgent now than it ever was before. A lot of propaganda was shown to increase awareness, including; social media posts, news channel coverage, newspapers, but more prominently, advertisements. One advertisement specifically deals with moms shedding some light on what's truly dangerous for their children. While the other is more safety oriented, including what could harm children and what could happen if a child got a hold of a gun.
One mass shooting after another, Congress has yet to address gun control. Ross Douthat, a New York Times reporter, wrote his opinion about why gun control is losing, Why Gun Control Loses, and Las Vegas Might Change That. The media and organizations for gun control only focus on the mass shootings, not about the everyday shootings that happen across the country. On top of that, the public forgets the tragedy, and the people that suffered until another mass shootings happen. On the other side of coin, Robert J. Spitzer, another New York Times Reporter, addresses the same issue but, instead of Ross Douthat, he provides what the public typically does against these shootings in his article, America Used to Be Good at Gun Control What Happened? The public has the misconception that it wasn't the gun that made the shooter pull the trigger, but the evil inside him did. However, most mass shooters don’t have a lengthy criminal record; it may be little to none. This is the reality of the nation when comes to a topic that should've been debated long before Las Vegas, Pulse, and Texas. The reason why gun control is still an issue, even after all these tragedies (and ones that aren't mentioned on the news), is simple: it has become a norm to hear calamites on the news, and until the United States reaches its limit, gun control won't be addressed. So, why is gun control continues to be an issue? What can we, as Americans, do to remedy gun control issues?
Firearms are the cause of death for more than 31,000 people per year, making it the 2nd leading cause of death for people ages 15-24 (National Center for Injury Control and Prevention). As the debate over gun control continues to spread throughout the nation like the plague, everyone is trying to choose a side. Some argue that their Second Amendment Rights are being infringed on, however, when looked at in detail that is not the case. Many others argue the regulation of guns is not beneficial because criminals are okay with doing illegal things, therefore they will obtain guns anyway. There is much, however, to disprove that. These weapons are the reason why the United States has such a high rate of violence even with such high wealth. Criminals should not have the access they currently have to such destructive weapons. Gun control must be put in place in order to decrease much of the violence and death by firarem that the United States has.
The topic of gun control is a a very talked about and subjective topic and has many different opinions and various extremes. First off, gun control can mean anything from having background checks or waiting periods when buying guns to taking away guns completely. Most people agree that background checks are necessary to keep guns out of people with bad intentions hands because a gun itself is a very neutral object and can be used for any amount of good or bad as can any other object. However, it is much easier for a person with bad intent to hurt more people with a gun then say a stick or another neutral object. The danger of a weapon is completely up to the person in control of the weapon.
The current gun control policies in the United States were implemented to ban gun possession by high-risk groups. They are to restrict the sales, transfers and purchase of guns to criminals, minors and the mentally ill. The laws restrict carrying guns in public areas, enforcing laws such as weapon permits and special licensing. The laws require licensed gun owners to register the weapons before they can be legally owned or possessed. There are restrictions and bans on certain guns on certain hand guns and automatic weaponry. Finally, the gun laws both state and local require a license by the federal government to sell guns.
Gun control does not stop criminals from obtaining guns; guns deter crime, but there should be some gun control such as universal background checks all federally licensed firearms dealer (FFL) can use. That is why there should be some gun control but not much. Guns are weapons and like any weapons, there are certain restrictions you must follow but, for the most part, any weapon/tool is allowed. What is so bad about that? Firstly, there is one major flaw with gun control and that is criminals can still buy a gun illegally and use it. So by creating gun laws it will not help, only hinder, the American citizen about the way to buy guns. To criminals, breaking the law is not a big deal; that is why criminals have the name. “To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to
Gun control in the United States is a very controversial topic in today’s political society, leaving the nation divided into two sides with two strongly opinionated beliefs. This all started with the increase in the amount of mass shootings and an overall increase in gun violence. The two sides consist of the liberal point of view and the conservative point of view. The liberals believe that the availability of firearms to the people in the country is a major issue, and that the U.S. government is at fault for the mass shootings due to the lenient regulations on guns. In retaliation, the conservatives argue that having a gun is a God given right, that the Second Amendment of The Constitution. Although the availability of guns is seen to be
Many small deaths such as Raymond Howell from mckinney texas and mass murders such as orlando florida's homosexual club shooting have occurred under the influence of guns. Guns have destroyed many lives. These deaths should not have occurred, With stricter gun control these unjustified murders would not have occurred and affect the lives of families. Gun control in America should be more restrictive because women will feel more protected from abusers, lower criminals with guns, unjustified gun deaths.
