Collaborative Introduction
Our topic is the societal impacts of technology, but because technology has drastically changed the way the entire world functions, the three authors have decided to narrow focus on two aspects of life: economics and mental health. While the two areas may seem incompatible, the economic state of a country directly affects the mental health of its citizens, and the economic estate relies on individuals. In order to accurately depict the two areas of effect, the author's focus is the United States, but compare technology use and mental health rates in the United States to the technology use and mental health rates of both China and Russia in order to generate a better understanding of American society. By understanding the impact of technology on economics and mental health, individuals are capable of making informed decisions about technology use, in doing so they directly impact their surrounding society.

However, the United States leads the world with its massive economy with China following close behind. How has the internet so greatly impacted every economy? The answer is quite simple, communication. The internet has allowed for different countries to communicate with one another and has created endless possibilities for economic success. By creating such a great economy, and giving people the opportunity to live easier lives, comes the topic of the quality of life. The United States has created the best quality of life for its citizens. Essentially, the United States gives the best opportunity for success out of every country, no matter how rich or poor. Russia, though it has a worse economy, has provided a better life for its citizens. And lastly, China has created a decent life for its inhabitants. So what is the reasoning for this? If the economy does not lead to a better life necessarily, what is the
Lindeen takes the perspective of gun control away from the people. He says the regulation of gun control does not need to be through gun control itself, but through the actions leading to the gun control. Lindeen states in his paper “ sloganeers make the concept of gun control or no control an easy thing to grasp and causes easy thoughts” (1659-1660). He looks at both interpretations of gun control and states there are other ways to help control violence then just taking away guns. According to him one of the problems is people do not know much about the data or the statistics. People only go with the facts they grew up with. People tend to not go on the computer and look up statistics about guns and deaths by guns. He also states the information
On July 27, 2004, Barack Obama delivered a keynote address at the Democratic National Convention that catapulted him onto the national stage and decidedly set in motion the rest of his political career. In it, Obama addresses controversial topics while simultaneously maintaining an underlying theme of collaboration and common experiences. His arguments can be comprehensively analyzed following the Toulmin model of argumentation. This model consists primarily of a claim, which is the assertion the rhetor attempts to prove, supporting evidence for the claim, and a warrant connecting the evidence to the claim. Secondary elements of this model include backing supporting the warrant, the
Australian multi-millionaire and property mogul Tim Gurner made a controversial claim on the Australian television show 60 Minutes, that purchasing avocado toast may be one of the reasons why millennials cannot afford a house.
Since my 6th grade field trip to Chicago, merely driving past the campus, attending Northwestern has been a goal of the utmost importance. I am fortunate to live in a country in which every student may find their perfect school, and Northwestern is mine. Primarily, the students and faculty appeal to my learning style. I thrive when in an environment surrounded by individuals that have the same desire for higher level learning than I do. I crave to be around others who share my motivation to get the best education possible, and I know Northwestern will offer nothing less. My decision was confirmed early junior year when a representative from Northwestern spoke to me about the school and what it had to offer. From puppies during finals week to
When people talk about exercise, there is one main workout that most people have done in their life. That exercise is running. For some, running isn’t just a way to go out and get healthy, running can be a way for people to escape the stressful lives they live in and go out and explore the world on the endless trail running has to offer. While most people think this, some have a different opinion on the topic. Some feel as though running is not healthy for you at all in the long run, and that it can cause some serious health effects to your body in the long run. However, after getting the facts from both sides of the argument, anyone will agree that running will benefit your health in the long run physically and mentally.
As technology grows so does the hours we spend using it to find creative new things to do. Video games have quickly become a favorite pass time for children. There is a lot of controversy of whether or not video games should be a significant part of a child’s development. They poses the ability to impact a child’s development positively and negatively. I believe that in moderation video games can help a child develop their executive functions such as attention, problem solving and memory. There are a variety of attentional disorders that affect the way a child develops. By investigating the impacts that video games have on children we could possibly prevent attentional disorder
Throughout the ages, running has always been a favored exercise among the people. Whether it be the Greek Olympics back in the first century or the modern-day World Track and Field Championship which recently ended, running has always been around and is considered one of the healthiest exercises by coaches around the globe. But in this generation, more and more people are transforming from highly active human beings into less active couch potatoes. According to the Webster Dictionary, running can be defined as “to run as part of a sport, for exercise, or in a race”. I’m not saying every single person should go run for a school cross-country or track team but running as an exercise does improves your lifestyle. Studies have shown that people
One of our most fundamental and oldest rights that were created in the late 1700s, are now creating controversial arguments about where we draw the line for freedom of speech. Currently, there are arguments of how much you can express your beliefs and ideas to everyone so that you do not invade their civil rights. For example, in the Tinker v. Des Moines case, the children were silently and peacefully protesting the Vietnam War by wearing black armbands to their arms. According to uscourts.gov, the school saw this as an act that disrupted the indoor activities taking place. Then this issue was sent to the Supreme Court. After debating with each other, the judges voted 7-2 in favor of the students. Their reasoning was that the students did not
The way a story is perceived is determined by how it is told. A story is shared by an author with their own individual opinions and viewpoints. Recently there was an airstrike drawn out by the American forces toward Libya that killed two Serbian hostages. When looking at two news sources, one Serbia and the other United States, there was a noticeable difference in the tone throughout each article. The United States news source on this specific topic focused on the Americans goal of the airstrike and if they had accomplished it, whereas the Serbia news source focused on questioning the Americans and attacking their actions of the airstrike. There are multiple differences in the two news sources based on its language and views however, there are areas that are found to be similar.
In this day and age, multiple things are open to teens that were not around in the past. Some of these things include television, newer age radio, and the Internet. Due to these things, several teens have been getting lower test scores and even lower social skills. Some people may ask if modern technology is making humans less intelligent. Regarding to an online article, "In a series of four experiments at Columbia and Harvard, Sparrow and her team found that students are more likely to recall a trivial fact if they think it will be erased from the computer, and forget it if they're assured it will be there" (Star wire services 1).My topic is like no other. My topic describes the change in humanity throughout the technological history.
Brandt’s purpose in writing this article was to explore relationships between writing and reading as they emerge in autobiographical accounts of literacy developments. Brant’s three anecdotes stand out in her eyes. They stand out to her because they say complicated things about writing and reading relationships. She also says that typically have not been treated in literature on the subject.Researchers conduct studies about education because they wanted to see how parents help their kids learn how to read, write and learn.Brant conducted her research an audiotaped interview with forty residents of Dane County, Wisconsin. The people that were involved in the research came from nursing homes, housing projects, social service agencies, schools, senior citizen
It is common to hear parents, somewhat jokingly, say their toddlers know more about navigating their smartphones than they do themselves. They are proud that their babies are tech savvy, as they should be. Many parents believe that since their children will be using technologies when they start school, they would be behind from the start if they do not have some technological skills ahead of time. Some of these parents probably lack confidence in their own technological abilities and want to make sure that their children are better prepared. Even low-income parents want to be sure that their children have opportunities to learn, so they let them spend a lot of time at public libraries or with friends or relatives who have computers at home (Plowman and McPake, 2013).
The People History stated, “Automobiles have come a long way since their beginning in the late 19th century. One of the major things that has helped automobiles to provide more safety and convenience, though, is electronics. With the advances in technology and electronics, car manufacturers have been able to offer a wide variety of services and conveniences that many new automobile owners appreciate” (ThePeoplehistory.com). With the help of our technology that continuously grows, our cars have become more safe for everyone inside, and outside, the vehicle. They now are able to get us where we need to be much quicker than before, and in a more efficient way. Furthermore, cars from the past have changed into what they are now, and continue to
Many papers exist which discuss the aggressive arguments supporting the addition of Hypersexual Disorder into the DSM-5, however, a key point that many lack is a definition of what actually is considered to be too much.(Moser, 2013). An individual may dedicate their time to volunteer work, so they can gain hours needed to apply for medical school, but the excessive amount of time spent does not speculate the discussion of a possible underlying disorder, but rather just dedication and time spent on their ambitions, similar to Wakefield’s (2011) suggestion that engaging in work, hobbies, or other ambitions that is time consuming is not an indication of a disorder, yet sexual interests and actions are pathologies. Martin Kafka (2009), a leading
Is homework, classwork, and formative assessment a beneficial tool for a student’s learning? A change has occurred in the grading system. The value of formative assessments has decreased to five percent. This change was implemented to minimize the negative effect it may have on a student’s grade. This allows the student to receive the full benefits of homework, classwork, and formative assessments without the anxiety that it could drastically drop their grade. The benefits of homework, classwork, and formative assessments are that students will have a higher academic performance, increased cognitive functions, and stronger parent-school connections; however, opposing views argues that it may lead the student to boredom with schoolwork.
