Many of you see animal testing as cruel and inhumane, I was one that viewed it that way before I took the time to sit down and research it. Studies show that before animals were studied on, it was humans that were being tested on. These unethical human experimentations took place in the 20th century. I want to be able to tell you the wrongs of human experimentations and why animal testing is the reason we are still alive today with all the medical advances we have now. Human experimentation has been happening in the United States for a very long time, and sadly it is still going on today. Helpless people, including children, the poor, prisoners, the sick, and even mentally disable people, were persuaded to be test subjects by little money that was a lot to them. …show more content…
Even with the advancement of our technology, we still can not track the way medications run through different parts of the body and the monitor outcomes that occur. Some scientists believe that studying cell structures could be the way to end animal testing, but they don't look at the fact that it doesn't provide the opportunity to study processes occurring in the central nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system. There is also common things such as blindness and high blood pressure that can not be studied using tissue structures (CBRA). Animal testing has resulted in longer life span with the advancements of medications and treatments. The California Biomedical Research Association states that nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from research using animals (CBRA). Stant2 Animal research has contributed to major advances in understanding and treating conditions such as breast cancer, brain injury, childhood leukemia, cystic fibrosis, malaria, multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis, and many others (Fisher). Along with the conditions, animal researching has
and they leave behind self-esteem and it isn’t just matter of vanity .according to study peoples with clean skin are perceived as a more confident, competent and credible
Gun regulation has been a controversial topic since they were first established as a weapon. People for and against gun regulation provide strong arguments for their side. Gun regulation has fluctuated over time due to changes in office. Being a democracy prevents us from having consistency. As a nation we continue to change regulations on guns because of the different views our democracy allows us to have. The main aspects pose the most problems in gun control are violence, illegal sale of guns, and mental health checks.
Have you ever had a sick relative? If so, have they used medication to help with said illness? Well that medication had to have come from somewhere. Animal testing has help conduct products such as vaccines for smallpox, hypothermia, and other major diseases. Now take into consideration what might have happened to that relative without the medication. As you can tell, animal testing has a positive impact on society, despite what might be claimed to be unjust. I will be explaining why this is so, and how some of the arguments are irrelevant.
Animal testing has been bad of the years and it can even be dated back to the ancient times of the greek. Physicians would dissect animals with the pure interest to obtain knowledge. But even then, one such physician stated that he would rather use a pig as his subject because he wanted to.The ethics of animal testing has always been questioned. Humans do not want to think of animals as on the same level of us. The similarity is terrifying and makes the cruelness obvious. In the 16 century it has been recorded that early vivisectionists, scientists who perform experiments and operations on live animals, did not consider animals to be of the same lineage of us and barely cared for them. The remaining are used as test dummies for products.
As of 2015, 200 to 225 million animals are said to used in laboratory research for the biomedical industry annually worldwide. Typically defended by arguments of reliability and human health benefits, recently the question of ethics and values placed on animal testing have caused it to become a relevant and pressing topic that has been more widely discussed and debated. First off, the laboratory conditions that are instigated upon millions of animal models for the sake of medical research has been said to be unethical and cruel. Additionally, it has been debated that the results of animal experimentation are unreliable across a wide range of areas. Lastly, animal testing not only leads away from the direction of resources from more effective testing methods but also prolongs the duration of time humans may need to wait for an effective cure. Therefore, the potential benefits of animal experimentation are greatly outweighed by the risks and collective harm of humans and animals which is why resources should be directed towards more human-based testing procedures.
When looking at the different medical procedures, I decided to choose something that I have gone through myself about a year ago which is a tonsillectomy. A tonsillectomy is defined as the surgical removal of the tonsils, two oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of the throat – one tonsil on each side (Mayo Clinic). This is a procedure that can be suggested for an infection, inflammation, or for sleep-disordered breathing. The desired outcome of this procedure is to help stop infections causing sore throats or help a person breathe better. The tonsils are two lymph nodes at the back of the throat, and they are part of the body’s defense mechanism.
Animal testing is remarkably cruel and inhumane. Animals that are used for testing are put in cages and isolated. They are usually, they are taken almost casually, housed appallingly, and denied anything close to a life (Newkirk). These animals are trapped their whole life and are stripped of their ways of life. Not to mention that within some of these laboratories, universities, and every other place that animal testing is conducted in, researchers treat animals very poorly. In one place, "workers were caught punching dogs in the face, screaming at the animals, and even simulating sex with each other while trying to inject a frightened beagle" (Newkirk). Not only do researchers do those cruel actions, but some "experimenters force-feed chemicals to animals, conduct repeated surgeries on them, implant wires in their brains, crush their spines, and much more" (PETA). Some may say that this does not happen and that animals do not experience pain anymore due to new laws, like the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). But, the truth is, these "laws" do barely anything, if nothing, to help stop the cruel
Before any researcher can carry out any experiment that involves animals or humans, they must consult an ethics board at their institution and gain approval. The process can be lengthy, especially if humans are to be involved. While researchers may complain about such a process, just the mention of the horrific human experiments performed by the Nazis during World War II should be ample justification for modern-day researchers' inconvenience. Typically, experiments that permanently damage humans' brains or abilities are never allowed. For example, research concerning pornography's effect on men used to be performed in the mid-twentieth century, but the findings of this research suggest that no more similar research can ever be performed. Did you know animal testing is really bad for animals? People burn, poison and shock helpless animals everyday just so they can collect a tiny bit of data. Why would people waste their time everyday abusing animals? We need to stop this kind of research because animals are getting brutally hurt, it is happening illegally and is often unregulated, and also most animal testing is ineffective on humans.
Some may disagree, saying that animal testing is helpful i challenge this. I don’t think animal testing is helpful it's harmful. Some people say that there were 3.7 million procedures done on animals and worked but do they know that, only 2% of human illnesses are seen in animals. That means the 98% of the illnesses that are not even seen ( Alternatives to Animal Testing), we still do tests for them. Therefore these means we are testing on animals for no good reason that can help us in any
Animal testing has been going on for centuries and it will probably continue that way if we don’t share the truth. Humans do not think that animals are on the same level as them so they treat them horribly
Chimps are put in this cage for years and has no food and water. A chimp is used every day for research. It was my first day as a scientist in a company that they offered me a job. I was going as in an undercover as an FBI. As soon as I walked in saw chimps being tested on. They were sending me undercover because peopled were filing reports about it and they were denning it. The senior professor told me to do my first job. He told me to give shots to the chimps and she what happened as I did that the chimps were afraid to came near me. As I walked down the hall they were all going to the back of the cage of how scared they were. The professor didn’t want to tell me what the shot did because he feared of my reaction. But I had already an Idea
Animal testing is often shunned, although it helps us cure, treat, and control certain diseases. Most people don't acknowledge that animal testing is here to help us with medical research. Animal testing has helped researchers understand different diseases such as, typhus, tuberculosis, maintaining diabetes, rabies, and many more. The fact we are able to live longlasting, happy, healthy lives is incredible. Sacrificing other animals for our own benefit doesn’t sound good but look how far we’ve gotten. Researchers have cured and found ways of helping people with conditions and diseases, it’s amazing.
Throughout history there are many examples of humans conducting experiments on other humans. Over the years human experimentation has greatly advanced the knowledge of human physiology and psychology, leading to better treatments for ailments both physical and mental as well as a better overall understanding of the human constitution. Despite all of the good which human experimentation has done for the human race there have been times when experimenters have taken human experimentation past the bounds of morality. This unethical human experimentation is most often caused when the experimenters are, in some way, able to justify their experiments.
In our ever-changing world the race to find the best technological advancements has never been higher. Progress within the medical field has changed drastically in the last 50 years. “Health is driven by the technologies that cure the unhealthy. These technologies need to advance along with an advancing society. In the last five decades new and improved, less expensive, medicine has been produced” (Leonard). Behind all this advanced medicine are the technologies, or creatures, that are used to test and improve the medicine. Animals are used to test the drugs and medicine that are in route to be produced for human use. “The term "Animal Testing" refers to procedures performed on living animals for purposes of research into basic biology and diseases, assessing the effectiveness of new medicinal products” (Humane Society). There are people who side with, and agree that animal testing improves the lives of humans, and there are individuals who believe the harm this research brings to animals is unreasonable and can be prevented.
