Are we teaching the right things, to the right people, in the right way?

Education is defined many ways. This idea was shown throughout several sources in this unit's theme of education. The definition of education is an interpretation of how one uses their education. Education is an investment that pays off in knowledge, intrinsic value, and income.

Knowledgeable, educated, and wise have become descriptive characteristics that have become seemingly interchangeable in today’s society. However, what does it mean to be educated, wise or knowledgeable? The Oxford Dictionary online defines the term “well-educated” as “having or showing a high level of education.” The opposite of “well-educated” according to Thesaurus.com includes antonyms such as “ignorant”, “unsophisticated”, “stupid”, and “uninformed”. Based on this dictionary definition, a person such as my girlfriend is well-educated since she earned two bachelor’s degrees, a master’s degree, and eventually a doctorate in Human Physiology. Does this definition imply that people who do not have advanced degrees are not well-educated? Since I have only a high school diploma and no advanced degrees, should I consider myself to be ignorant, unsophisticated, stupid, and uninformed? I will argue that being well-educated goes beyond the basic education attained during grade school and is not tied to the number of degrees earned, the prestige of the school, the number of discrete facts memorized, test scores on standardized tests, or any other measure of time spent in the classroom. Being well-educated is also not measured by standards of success in a career such as job skills, salary earnings, performance reviews, or job titles. Neither one of these standards includes the lifelong learning that occurs outside of the classroom. A more appropriate definition of being well-educated should include an ongoing desire to expand one’s knowledge and understanding of the world around us.

Education is about teaching and learning for improving skills and knowledge. Education also means helping people to do, to learn and encouraging them to think what they learn. Education can give people knowledge of society, country, the world and many things else. From children to adult are supposed to have knowledge through education. Acquiring education is one of the most critical aspects of a person’s life. It should be seen as vital as the air we breathe. The key to a healthy mind and a successful person is learning. “Without education, you’re not going anywhere in this world” is a famous quote by Malcolm X. Although an education can be paid for, no one can physically give you an education, so it is not a gift. There are societal situations where an education is a necessity, but not many globally. Education is the gradual process of meaning making and acquiring “knowledge.” One views the world through his or her own set of lenses or filters, from his or her own perspective, and the mind of the learner attempts to connect new information to existing schema to make new connections. These constructions and connections in the brain become "knowledge." Therefore, knowledge when people begin to understand facts or information through experience and/or learning. We begin to realize, through knowledge, details that we learn in isolation are actually interconnected. Education can be intentional or unintentional and can occur everywhere and at any time. Education is greatly influenced by affective factors and social context. It has both internal and external value, both to a person and to all of society.

If this was the case, some of these workers would not be able to do their job, that require smart employees that can think. According to the article, "many assume that intelligence is closely related to education; meaning the type of education, how much, and how long." Some blue collar jobs do require less education, but the workers are still extremely skilled at what they do. These workers have to be precise and get their jobs done the right way every time. If all blue collar workers were undereducated, they would not be able to handle this type of work.

Education is needed for individuals to function in society. Without the proper tools, people would be a burden instead of an asset. To become an asset, individuals need to be exposed to those elements which would enrich their lives through knowledge. Knowledge in our society is basically learned through education. The basic knowledge each person should receive from an education is the three R’s; reading writing, and arithmetic. These mediums will enable a person to survive in today’s society.

Education is the process of learning that can take place anywhere and at any time. I believe that creativity and activity as well as books and lessons are essential to the learning process. As a teacher, I hope to instill in the children a sense of knowledge and self-worth that will remain with them throughout their lives.
