Survey Takers
As our survey was regarded towards teens, we put the link of our survey in the bio of our instagram accounts. Since our followers are our teen friends, we got many responses from the right audience. We also put the link in the family studies google classroom so our classmates could take it. We got responses from high schools that our other friends go to so that includes:
Unionville High School
Westmount Collegiate Institute
Alexander Mackenzie High School
Richmond Hill High

In another question we asked our survey takers if they feel like they are treated differently by someone older than them because of their age. We found this question particularly helpful because articles online proved the point of the majority who answered this question. Twenty four agreed and twenty seven strongly agreed to this question which is majority. Most said that they have felt like this at stores and school. After collecting this information we did some more research and stumbled across an article that shocked us. What we found were some articles online about how teens have low self-esteem, but they started off discriminating teenagers because of their age. The first sentence of one article was, “Kids and teenagers are ruder and wilder and more irresponsible than ever before.” (Parales, 1999, p. 1)
Forms response chart. Question title: 5. a) I feel like I have been treated differently by someone older than me because of my age. . Number of responses: 55 responses.
We also took our topic further and asked teens if they felt like our own legal system was making assumptions on us based on our age and give an example if they agreed. We assumed that people would agree and we were correct. 46.3% strongly agreed and 29.1% agreed which was the majority. Some of the popular examples were:
Voting age
Drinking age
Driving age
Army enrollment age
Job ages
What people were talking about for those answers was how they think the government assumes our maturity level by our
In the court of law many difficult decisions are made, and one is whether juveniles should be tried as adults or not. Many teens today are being placed in an adult prison for crimes they have committed. The crimes these teens commit are not necessarily their fault, but a poor choice they made. Teens should not be tried as adults for the risk of being sexually abused, not having a well developed brain, and having a higher risk of them committing suicide.
Teenagers are often seen in society as careless and dangerous in the U.S. society. With many articles on adolescence, this thought stays true. Although, in a basic psychology book the author contradicts this thought. The author of a basic psychology book merely states that peers often coincide with parents on encouraging teens to do well. So, what’s the truth? The best way to answer this is to analyze articles that have strong support for their opinion on adolescence. An article by the name of “Why Teen-Agers Are the Worst” by Elizabeth Kolbert explores the possibilities on why teenagers may be dangerous. Kolbert’s thesis is “At moments of extreme exasperation, parents may think that there’s something wrong with their teen-agers’ brains. Which, according to recent books on adolescence,
These stereotypes, however, are very far from the truth about what occurs during the late adulthood stage. They stem from a form of prejudice referred to as ageism (Berger, 2008). Gerontologists define ageism as “A form of prejudice used to categorize and judge individual based on their chronological age only” (Berger, 2008, p. 615). The issue of ageism can promote patronizing treatment toward persons in the late adulthood stage and even foster discrimination. For example, people in the West unconsciously process
(n.d.), 46 percent of people say juvenile offenders should not be tried and punished as adults while 54 percent of people agree with that juvenile offenders should be tried and punished as adults. The common opinion for agreement is that teens can know and understand about what they do and for disagreement is that teens are kids, and they are still in the process of developing to be adults. Especially, it is quite common voice of disagreement that juvenile justice system should punish juvenile offenders because they are criminal offenders even though they are
Ageism is prejudice and discrimination against older adults. (Schaefer, 2012) It is a set of beliefs, attitudes, norms, and values used to justify age based prejudice, discrimination, and subordination. This may be casual or systematic. The term was coined in 1969 by
The conclusion made by the authors is that society’s treatment of ageism should become “prime research topic across multiple social sciences”. They also
Ageism is known as a prejudice or discrimination based solely on one’s age. Similar to sexism and racism, ageism involves holding negative stereotypes about an individual based on them being a different age. Gerontologist Robert N. Butler was the first to use the term ageism when he was describing the discrimination against individuals within late adulthood. In modern day the term
Markee states that young people may not be concerned about ageism until it affects them. The reality is that it affects them now, and has since they were born. And the further they push addressing it, the more deeply it will affect them. Supporting an elder can help the individual figure out how they will fact the issue later on. The author then lists some measure allies of elders can take to help the older community. Some statements fall in different categories about their mindset, physical, mental, and psychological health. Older people should be assumed to have the potential to be brilliant, that they have long, productive futures, and that they have given up in life. Also, older people are sexually appealing and that they do have sexual needs. Older people should also be offered to give their opinion without being interrupted. Allies should not think that memory loss or physical deterioration is the result of being old, but could be accumulated distress or illness. The author ends the essay by mentioning that allies should choose an elder that is not being supported and support them. This could be beneficial to the ally. Just as it is the duty of the dominant group to support the disenfranchised group, as in the case for white leaders to support people of color leaders, as members of the upper case should support members of the working class, younger leaders should support older
Exploring the Data - Younger ages (less than 20) have a larger affect than old age in feeling “underprivileged”.
Knowing and having an understanding of what ageing stands for, remains an important step, growing-up or growing older and ageism are theories about older individuals. Ageism includes preconceptions that elderly are categorized for their age and perceived as weak, and incapable of performing tasks and needy of others (Quadagno, 2014). Another view about elderly individuals is the way they are looked down on by the younger society, i.e. elderly are not as intelligent as their younger competitive working force. People fear what they do not know and do not understand. Age transpires as something that must be lived through in order to understand what ageing means; looking back on one’s life and seeing accomplishments made,
People are denied their sense of agency on many levels in regards to decision-making, freedom, and independence. The youth, as well as the elderly are either seen as incompetent because lack of knowledge or expertise. Youth especially minors are given less acknowledgment due to being such a young age, especially when it comes to medical practices. Youth are discriminated by older people, usually those who are established. For instance, youth and crime, all youth that have had a criminal record are labeled as being bad, and a lot are stereotyped into this system because they have the same attributes as others who have caused crime. The elderly gets discriminated by because they are not as able, physically and mentally, and professionals and younger people talk down to them because they think/ know that they no longer don’t know what may be the best situation for them. The elderly people get taken advantage of sometimes because of this because they are so unknowing of the continuous changes around them.
A number of researchers have suggested over years that teenage brains are not yet fully developed. At the National Institute of Mental Health researchers have studied the human brain ever since the stage of birth all the way to adulthood, to prove that the brain is not complete. When it comes to this topic, Americans assume that if a teenage commits a crime than they should not be held accountable because of their age. Yet they must consider that teens are capable of understanding the situation they are in, how they are looked upon as young adults,, and how they should learn from their mistakes.
In most modern society, emphasis and value are placed on youth, with advertising geared toward and glamorizing the young. In the entertainment industry which has a big influence on culture aging is seen as a shameful thing when in reality it’s a natural process. Aging gracefully is a thing of the past when there is pressure to stay young with technological advances by performing invasive cosmetic surgeries to fight the aging process and different types of ageing products. Aging in today’s society is seen more as a disease than a natural process. The elderly are victims of mistaken beliefs and irrational attitudes
Ageism is any attitudes, actions, or institutional structure which subordinates a person or group because of their age or any assignment of roles in society purely on the basis of age. It typically reflects a prejudice in society against older adults. The concept of aging varies across different cultures as different countries have varying demographic statistics such as Japan and Italy having significant part of their population above the age of 60 versus most countries in Africa who have significant parts of their population below the age of 30. Most research on ageism is done on children, adolescents, or young adults with few studies on actual older adults. Age is increasingly becoming a more positive concept, yet older people are still stereotyped. The three theories in sociology about aging are disengagement, activity, and continuity.
A large complaint with young individuals is the legal drinking age. Many of them feel that the age should be dropped down to 18 years old. The argument behind this is if they are old enough and mature enough at this age to go die for their country in the military, they should be old enough to make the decision by themselves whether or not to drink. The other side of this argument is that the brain is not fully developed at this age in responsible decision making. When given this argument, a lot of the adolescence go back to the argument that if they can vote for the leaders of their country, they should be able to drink. In a survey conducted at NC State University, the largest complaint about being looked down upon with their age was the legal drinking age.
