The practice of NFL, and College football teams using Native American names and symbols as mascots is a sign of disrespect to their culture. These symbols are highly respected throughout society because they hold a rich history. The continued degrading by these teams is giving them a bad reputation within our society.

Teams in every sport, at every level of competition, have a mascot. It is the mascot that represents the competitive spirit and team identity, motivating players and fans alike. Does the symbol chosen have any impact on whether a team wins or loses? Unlikely. But the choice of a Native American mascot continues to ignite debate and controversy among athletes, fans and alumni, as well as those people who might otherwise be disinterested in sports. Do you feel having Indian mascots for sports teams take part in racial discrimination? In the sports world, representing a Native American is showing honor and respect. In society, communities take it as offensive and racist towards Native Americans. The government recognizes the positive representation of Indians and has given them more rights than state citizens. Considering the history, what it means, and general attitude, Indian mascots should be allowed.

In 1991-1992, sports teams would have Native American names, logos, and mascot. Native Americans were outraged. They would protest for the branding to be changed. It is stereotyping the indigenous people. Native Americans had planned to put a stop to the use of Native Americans nicknames, logos, and mascot. Imagine this: thousands of stands congregating in a stadium to cheer on their football team. They are all dressed up in their football jerseys and have their face painted to support their beloved football team. Their mascot? The blacks. On all of their jerseys, flags, on the field have their mascot painted on. The mascot is a derogatory depiction of the average black person and the stereotypes that are often associated with black people.
