It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity”, these are the quotes of the famous German physicist Albert Einstein in relation to how the world has become overly reliant on technology. As a result, we have taken nature for granted while also ignoring the adverse effects of technology. The making of steam engine, the usage of fossil fuel and the creation of chlorofluorocarbon are all technologies which has benefited us greatly and are continuing to do so, but like everything on this earth there are always negatives to counter the positives This is the balance that we must find between nature and humans.

The article ‘Rise of the Machines’ is Not a Likely Future (2015), Michael Littman addresses the issue and worries that people have with regards to technology. The article attempts to persuade readers to believe that there is no need to fear technology as it is just not possible that they can overtake humanity. Zeynep Tufekci touches on the issue of machines taking over jobs of human, titled “The Machines are Coming (2015)”. She attempts to argue that there is no need to reject or blame technology for taking over jobs at the workplace. Littman’s argument is stronger than Tufekci as he provided logical reasoning due to a well balanced structure with consideration of opposable viewpoints with substantial evidence and effective usage of Pathos to appeal to the reader. Tufecki’s argument is weak due to the lack of evidence and her claim was only brought in at the end of her article which makes it seem very lop-sided.

Technology can become handy for the typical person who legitimately does not have enough time on their hands. For example, “[a calculator] can accurately solve mathematical equations it would take humans months to complete in seconds” (Zatarain). This type of technology makes beneficial tasks like balancing chemical equations for the advancement of science, much faster. Another example includes how technological advances can benefit a person’s health. For example a machine called the Cell-CT platform can detect lung cancer by examining “800 physical characteristics to identify lung cancer cells…with virtually no false positive results”; this advanced machine has the ability to save lives and give smokers the heads up to go into treatment (Radcliffe). In Nicholas Carr’s essay “All Can Be Lost: The Risk of Putting Our Knowledge in the Hands of Machine’s” he brings up the ethical problem of technology. Technology is all around today, but people are starting to wonder if this surplus of technology is starting to make the world less smart. Carr’s primary argument is as technology becomes more prevalent, people are losing knowledge to do certain tasks. Carr claims this is bad because people are putting their lives at risk and dying due to this lack of knowledge. People are starting to get lazier because of technology. They start to care less and think they are gaining something extra by using the technology, when, in fact it is the exact opposite. Carr states, “most of us want to believe that automation frees us to spend our time on higher pursuits but doesn’t otherwise alter the way we behave or think. That view is a fallacy” (5). This fallacy is affecting how people think and how current children are being taught in schools. Children as young as preschoolers are now starting to use tablets and computers for learning instead of having a teacher doing their job fully and actually teaching them. Instead of adding something to a task or helping to get it accomplished technology, “alters the character of the entire task, including the roles, attitudes, and skills of the people taking part” (5). Throughout his entire essay, Carr argues mostly why he believes too much technology could be harmful in the long run, but also states

Unemployment has always taken America into its darkest ages; therefore, the United States needs to stay away from automation in order to prevent another employment downfall. By introducing intelligent machines into America, businesses will seek to acquire some of the technology. Since the machines don’t require a wage, businesses will increase in profit making them big barrels of money. Even if the machines are at high cost, it doesn’t mean businesses will forget about it, yet they know they will benefit on the long term by getting the machines. As a result, employees will start getting fired from their jobs, getting replaced by robots. This will ruin families and the peaceful society that has been present through the years.

Many generalizations are present throughout this chapter that weaken Carr’s argument. This quote is just one of the few generalizations, “The intellectual ethic of a technology is rarely recognized by its inventors. They are usually so intent on solving a particular problem or untangling some thorny scientific or engineering dilemma that they don’t see the implications of their work. The users of the technology are also usually oblivious to its ethic. They, too, are concerned with the practical benefits they gain from employing the tool” (Carr 45). As stated before this quote is a generalization. Carr is generalizing with the assumption that inventors are usually so intent on solving a problem that they aren’t focuses on the benefits or consumers, which isn’t very true anymore. Many inventors who create products are now looing for the benefits that its user or consumer will get. Therefore this quote can confuse the reader.

Technology has been improving at rates faster than the society itself over the past 3 decades. The beginnings of machinery used during the Industrial Revolution was meant to aid and improve the working conditions of factory workers; while machinery did just that it also took away many jobs as technology grew to be more reliable than human beings themselves. No one would have expected that improved machinery created by humans themselves would strip human beings of their source of living and create economic stagnation. As artificial intelligence came into play and continues to improve, humans will slowly be phased out of the workforce society. The day in which people will not be needed in the workforce will come or rather in a matter of time as our electronic counterparts are faster, more accurate, more reliable, and way beyond the power of humans to keep check. Technological improvements of the society do not promote the moral principle of utilitarianism.

We as people rely on technology too much by expecting the machine to do something by the click of a button and get angry when the machinery isn’t working. At the beginning technology wasn’t thought of too much but at this point technology is getting people addicted from kids to the elderly.

First, technology is making the society smarter due to new machines; furthermore, technology has impacted in the America culture which is great. The influenced that technology has in America culture is good because it will change the way people think and develop new ideas in the future, so it can affect the American culture in good ways. For example, people will get educated due to new advanced technology because machines or programs will always be there to help human beings. Actually, computer and machines have the ability to think faster than humans being, so according to Thompson, “The computer would bring the lightning fast” because computers or machines have a database ready to think really fast (344). Every time human beings develop new innovations people worry about that the life is not going to be the same because technology will change their people’s lives because according to Thompson, the machine’s way of “thinking” is fundamentally unhuman” (243). In addition, when machines get better than the human beings, there will be great help from computers or machines. The America culture can be affect by the technology because new machines, but it will never have some negative influences. Technology will improve American culture in good ways because technology will help people in so many ways as thinking, developing new ideas, and new creations.

We rely on technology nowadays to do simple tasks for us like dry our hair, research answers on the web, and watch television for entertainment and for the news.
