Whether humans are inherently good or evil has been a long-standing debate since the time of Plato. Although there is no one true answer as every person has a different view on this issue, I believe that humans are neither good or evil but are shaped by their environment and the circumstances they have been through. Each human, when born, is like a blank slate that has not been written on, completely untouched by the outside world. As a person faces various circumstances throughout his or her life the person changes and becomes either good or evil. A prime example of this is the difference in the actions of the boys in Lord of the Flies by William Golding and The Coral Island by R. M. Ballantyne. In the Lord of the Flies the harsh conditions
It is a very arguable subject on whether or not people are born with good intentions, and therefore taught by others the ‘evil’ side of their personality. Whether it is the absence of ethical conduct in human nature, or just the way one perceives a situation, evil seems to be prominent in our everyday lives. Humans seem to have a moral code that follows them with every decision they make, yet despite the laws of morality and society, people of this world still seem to behave inhumanely because of the act of self-preservation, human interest, and who exactly the authority figure is at the time.
Are humans inherently good or evil? The simple question has been asked many times, even though the answer isn't so simple. In William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies, he further explores the concept. His novel is viewed through young boys trapped on a deserted island, striving to survive. In The Most Dangerous Game, Richard Connell investigates influences and integrity. In non-fiction texts, like "Why Boys Become Vicious" also by William Golding, the author defends his position and gives specific examples to support his stance. In other non-fiction works, authors have given their own views of human's natural behavior. Although some authors believe humans are good and others believe they are inherently evil, based on the evidence humans are born balance with both good and evil. Different situations however, shape their behavior and cause them to be either more good or evil.
The novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding questions individuals whether humans are naturally good or evil. Throughout the novel, there are certain events and people that show humans are good. Not only is it shown in books but in real life too. Martin Luther King Jr. is a great example of this because what he did changed millions of lives and not in a bad way. As of the book, there are two characters that support the idea of humans being good. One of them is Simon and the other is Samneric. These two characters in Lord of the Flies help shape the answer of this question because the island never changed them. Humans have the choice of whether they want to turn evil or remain good. As seen by Simon and Samneric in Lord of the Flies by William
I believe that human beings are basically good. When they are first born and grow up as babies and toddlers, humans are innocent. However, with the effects of outside experiences and social expectations, human beings can be prone to evil. Humans want to be recognized within society and this can be seen in the movie, “The Talented Mr. Ripley”. Due to the social environment that Tom Ripley lives in, he feels the need to fit in and be wealthy like the people around him. This causes him to seek for ways, whether the action is moral or immoral, to attain a higher social status.
How does someone become “good” or “evil”? Are people born one way or the other? Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a great book for looking about humanity. The book follows Ralph, Jack, and a group of boys that have plane crashed on an island. They are really torn apart into two tribes, one wanting to hunt and relax on the island. The other wanting to be civilized and to get rescued as soon as possible. The boys are brought back together when a vicious beast occurs and they try to kill it together. William Golding conveys his beliefs about evil to the reader by telling some of the boy’s background, the certain characteristics the boy’s evolved into while on the island, and challenges the boys faced.
The question whether man is inherently good or evil has been on the table for many decades and has been answered in several way through religion and even through philosophy. Some argue that all human beings are naturally good but society is what changes their ways into making them evil. Others, however, would argue humans have innate evil that cannot be controlled if taken to certain limits. Although both Huckleberry Finn and Lord of the Flies deal with completely different storylines, both works prove that personal morality always overpowers societal morality. However, human nature is portrayed in a positive way in Huck Finn, while in Lord of the Flies, it can be sometimes seen as innate human evil. This is proven through the examination of
No one is born good or evil; it is one's environment and the people they encounter in life which makes them good or evil. A lot of time it is not the individual's fault of the way they are, they might have seen so many bad doings that, they are use to it and might think that it is right. One is not born with a vision of knowing what is wrong and what is right in life, but learns when something happens to
Are humans essentially good or evil? Although humankind wants to be good and tries its best to control for peace and order, eventually, its dark side will show because humans are essentially bad whether we embrace it or not. Everyone has their dark side and it will always show at some point as depicted in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. Some may argue that there is still hope for humankind and that they are essentially good. However, it does not change the sad reality of human’s evil desire and hunger for power and survival which leads to the betrayal of goodness of mankind.
Many of the major concepts in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD revolve around this statement - people are generally either good or evil. Antagonists like Mr. Nathan and even Ms. Dubose and protagonists like Ms. Maudie are an example of this. Throughout the novel, Mr. Nathan is referred to as scary and stoic. Ms. Dubose ridicules the children and their father, spouting insults. Scout sees these characters as evil and keeps her opinion firm and unmoving. Her first thought is to fight back and this is displayed when she fights Francis. This is vice versa with protagonists such as Ms. Maudie. Since, she is the narrator this is a key factor that drives the novel. Her outlook and take on the past is what makes TO
Humanity is interesting in that humans can be evil or good. Examples can be seen in the news, which tells of the kindness of strangers, but also tell of the merciless slaughtering of innocent people. This leads to the question that many ponder, is human nature inherently good or bad? Human nature is bad, and the main elements of human nature include selfishness, cowardice, and violence.
There are many theories why people could do evil things. Is it because they were abused or had a rough childhood? What if the society isn’t to blame at all for their behavior? (Olivia Goldhill “Are Some Humans born evil?”) People say people are born evil or people who are born good turn evil. This topic has been studied for many years and many people have different opinions about it. A person may say they don’t believe that people are born evil. Another person may think that people are born evil or good people turn evil. An example is babies aren’t born evil. Their minds are wonderful. Their minds are innocent and they don’t know much. A person can’t possibly be born evil. It really depends sometimes how a person is raised or what that person experiences in life.
Since the beginning of time there has been confusion about every aspect of life and with confusion comes a number of questions we cannot completely answer or forget. How did we transform from one creature to another? Why are people so violent? Are we inherently good or evil? These are questions that have been asked for centuries, and have taken ever longer to possibly answer. It might be numerous decades from now before they finally answer these questions but, nevertheless many people are trying by using evidence, theories, faith, and science to answer these questions as accurately as possible. Mainly the question about whether we are innately innocent or not. Most people, say humans are inherently evil, that there is evil in all of us. That could be the reason why kids enjoy watching ants succumb when they burn them with reflected rays of sunlight. However, many believe that we are born good with a clean slate and that it is society of whom changes that. I believe that we are born sinful/evil and that society influence us to be good. The facts have proven humans to be innately evil through genetics, control, and mistreatment.
In today’s society, it’s incredibly easy to find bad news. Reports of the wrongdoings of humanity are constantly circling through the media. “Three women were kidnapped and held captive for ten years, a teenager shot up an elementary school, and a teenage girl was shot for wanting to go to school.” Many believe that mankind is born with a special form of evil and we do what we please with it. Arthur Miller’s The Crucible says otherwise.
To believe that people are inherently good or evil is dangerously over-simplistic. This belief shapes what society thinks of bad people – bad people commit crimes and should therefore be sent to jail so that they can’t harm or influence others with their ‘bad’ behaviour. This topic has been debated for centuries and has caused many conflicts and wars throughout history and has definitely been a popular topic of discussion in the present. This concept makes groups believe that they are fighting against an evil enemy but that is just their view. These groups believe that by defeating this enemy, the world will live in a world where peace and goodness reigns.
Humanity’s natural state of being good or evil has no scientific evidence of which side we are on. Christian Smith believes our daily lives affect our cooperation with each other “I prefer to think harder about ways our social scientific, moral, and Political views of human beings might better correspond with and reinforce one another”. Henry Wilson Wieman believes basic nature is nothing but science. No one can prove whether he is right or wrong, Scientists don't have an answer to why we act the way we do. I don't think it's far fetched at all I believe it could just be human science that we are technologically advanced enough to find yet. The boys in Lord of the Flies had begin to lose their sanity the longer they were on the island. Once
